Stoneman Douglas Looks the Part in win over St. Thomas Aquinas

Doug Freeman
PBR Florida Executive Director

After a tough opening week, No 10 Stoneman Douglas looked the part of a national powerhouse, likely earning a move back up the Power25 rankings against a quality St Thomas Aquinas team on the road. One of Douglas’ top prospects in 2022 Roman Anthony, led the game off with a second pitch home run to right.

The starting pitcher,
Jake Clemente, would then follow up with a home run himself and Douglas would eventually lead 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning.

Clemente would take over from there. He has gotten more physical and shows a strong, athletic frame. He came out and attacked with all fastballs in the first inning, working 94-96 touching 97 mph in the first, while striking out a pair.

2024
Anthony Ciscar would settle in for St Thomas and battle at 83-86 and showed feel for a curveball and changeup around the zone, going the next three innings scoreless. Clemente would settle in around 91-94 mph with the fastball and mixed in a sweeping slider at 77-81 that showed later action when thrown harder.

Clemente would go on to help himself yet again in the fifth inning with another home run and eventually exiting the mound with a 5-0 lead. He would go five innings, allow no runs on three hits while striking out nine and getting nine swings and misses on the fastball with late sinking life.

Christian Rodriguez would come into the game in relief and attack with his patented low 90s fastball and hard slider, striking out a pair and finishing the shutout and dominating 6-0 win for the Stoneman Douglas Eagles.

Scout Notes

Roman Anthony

Anthony is an athletic left-handed hitting outfielder who projects to add strength to the frame and likely shifts to a corner. Shows plus bat speed and is aggressive through the zone. Showed some patience with a pair of walks, has some swing and miss, but has a lot upside in the offensive tools.

Jake Clemente

Clemente has gotten more physical and shows a strong, athletic frame. Has some intent, but arm is athletic and quick. He came out and attacked with all fastballs in the first inning, working 94-96 touching 97 mph in the first, while striking out a pair. He would settle in around 91-94 mph with the fastball and mixed in a sweeping slider at 77-81 that showed later action when thrown harder. Clemente would go on to help himself yet again in the fifth inning with another home run and eventually exiting the mound with a 5-0 lead. He would go five innings, allow no runs on three hits while striking out nine and getting nine swing and misses on the fastball with late sinking life.
