Summer Standouts: North Region 2023s

After a long hot summer down in the sunshine state, we want to look back at the many players who stood out at showcases this year. Plenty of committed and uncommitted talent from each high school class made a name for themselves this summer and really stood out to our scouting staff.

Monday, we introduced our 2021 Summer Standout series. This series will highlight players from each class that really stood out at our events this summer. Throughout this Summer Standout Series, we will get ready for our State Games this Fall with the theme of #RepYourRegion. Each standout article will be broken down region by region. Today, we will the North Region 2023 Standouts.

North Region 2023 Standouts

Mark Alvelo SS / 3B / Bartram Trail, FL / 2023

5-foot-10, 165-pound athletic solid build. Solid at the plate, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 89 mph. (63.15 mph bat speed average). (21.80 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced stance with a controlled load, then used a toe tap stride. Bat speed was efficient, used a short upward swing plane and high finish. Barreled up multiple balls with some loud contact. Up the middle gap to gap approach. Solid in the infield, his best throw was registered at 80 mph; had a clean quick exchange, athletic footwork, and soft sure hands. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Used a low ¾ slot with a quick arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the base. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.54.

Shawn Andrade SS / St. Johns Country Day, FL / 2023

South Florida Commit, 5-foot-11, 160-pound solid athletic build. Above average during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 86 mph. (63.16 mph bat speed average). (18.90 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced stance with a controlled small load, then used a short stride. Has electric bat speed, short flat swing plane and high finish. Through his round he found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Line drive gap to gap approach. Above average in the infield, his best throw was registered at 84 mph; showed consistent soft hands, a clean quick exchange, and smooth athletic feet. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a ¾ slot and a short very quick arm action. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.42.

Will Barter C / OF / Pensacola Catholic, FL / 2023

Tulane Commit, 6-foot, 145-pound long athletic build. Athletic during batting practice, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 92 mph. (65.29 mph bat speed average). (24.06 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced crouched stance with a small slow load, then uses a short stride. Bat speed was explosive, used a short simple swing plane and good extension on his finish. He produced a lot of loud contact and found multiple barrels. Gap to gap approach. Capable from the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 84 mph; showed sure consistent hands, a quick clean exchange, and rhythmic fluid feet. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a short very quick arm action with a high ¾ slot.

Zack DeJesus OF / 1B / Pensacola Catholic, FL / 2023

6-foot, 190-pound lean athletic build. Smooth athletic during batting practice, Dejesus had a max exit velocity of 94 mph. (68.61 mph bat speed average). (20.98 mph hand speed average). Begins in a crouched wide stance with a tight compact load, then uses a short quick stride. Bat speed is quick efficient, has a loose upward swing plane and high good extension on his finish. He found multiple barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap aggressive approach. Athletic in the infield, his position velocity was registered at 75 mph; had athletic consistent footwork, a clean natural exchange, and consistent hands. Confident from the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 79 mph; has smooth fluid feet, a natural fluid exchange, and soft sure hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were quick. Showed a high ¾ slot and a quick compact arm action with consistent accuracy to the bag.

Jack Dennison LHP / OF / Niceville, FL / 2023

5-foot-9, 140-pound long lanky build. Solid at the plate, Dennison clocked an exit velocity of 84 mph. (58.69 mph bat speed average). (19.89 mph hand speed average). Starts in an athletic balanced stance with a compact arm bar load, then uses a quick toe tap stride. Has a loose upward swing plane, efficient bat speed and good extension on his finish. He found lots of barrels with loud contact. Line drive approach. Confident from the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 80 mph; shows choppy consistent feet, a fluid natural exchange, and sure hands. Movements laterally were quick and he fields the ball out front. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot and a longer loose arm action. Projectable on the mound, used a longer loose arm action with a high ¾ arm angle while showing good consistent arm speed. Up-tempo type pitcher and shows decent effort. Balance point is tall with uphill in line shoulders during delivery. Lands square with a falling off finish. Threw his fastball 77-79 mph and topped out at 80 mph; has consistent command and running action with sharp movement. (Max spin 2167; Avg 2068). Showed glove side control and sweeping action on his 1/7 curveball (66-70). (Max spin 2138; Avg 2034). His changeup (70-72) shows decent control and fading action. 

Luke Elmore SS / 3B / Mosley, FL / 2023

5-foot-10, 170-pound athletic solid build. Solid during batting practice, Elmore recorded an exit velocity of 86 mph. (61.78 mph bat speed average). (16.89 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced wide stance with a quick arm bar load, then uses a controlled leg kick. Bat speed was quick efficient, displayed a level loose swing plane and high good extension on his finish. In his round he found lots of barrels with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Confident in the infield, his position velocity was registered at 81 mph; had a clean natural exchange, athletic rhythmic footwork, and soft sure hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Had a compact quick arm action and a high ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the bag.
