The 2021 Sunshine State Classic took place Wednesday, June 16th at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. The event featured players from the 2021-2024 classes participating in a pro-style workout followed by gameplay in front of the PBR Florida Scouting Staff.

Player Analysis

Matthew Beckett OF / 2B / J.W. Mitchell, FL / 2024

5-foot-9, 170-pound lean physical build. Confident during batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 88 mph. (64.82 mph bat speed average). (19.55 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced athletic stance with a small arm bar load, then used a toe tap. Has a simple uphill swing plane, efficient bat speed and high finish. Produced loud contact and found multiple barrels. Pull side approach. Raw in the infield, displayed a velocity of 72 mph; had sure consistent hands, choppy footwork, and a packing lengthy exchange. Capable from the outfield, he showed the ability to throw at velocities up to 80 mph; had consistent hands, a lengthy exchange, and choppy rhythmic footwork. Movements laterally were developing and he fields the ball deep. Used a high ¾ slot and a short arm action while showing decent accuracy to the base. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.43.  


William Boyer 1B / 3B / East Lake , FL / 2023

5-foot-10, 240-pound sturdy solid frame. Raw in the box, Boyer had an exit velocity of 88 mph. (64.56 mph bat speed average). (18.37 mph hand speed average). Begins in a tall stance with a slow low load, then uses a big leg kick. Has some bat speed, level swing plane and high finish. He found some barrels with some loud contact. Line drive approach. Raw in the infield, recorded a position velocity of 62 mph; shows raw hands, a natural exchange, and developing feet. Laterally, movements were developing and fielded the ball out front. Decent accuracy to the bases, used an-over-the-top slot and a stiff arm action. Clocked a 60 time of 8.27 at the event. Raw on the mound, used a short arm action and a high ¾ arm angle while showing developing arm speed. Up-tempo type pitcher and shows some effort. Displays even shoulders and a consistent balance point. Lands square with an upright finish. Sat with his fastball at 63-66 mph and topped out at 67 mph; has a control around the zone that shows straight movement. (Max spin 1688; Avg 1603). He shows gradual action and decent control on his 11/5 curveball (57-59). (Max spin 1807; Avg 1721). 


Keeton Burroughs SS / 2B / Calvary Christian, FL / 2023

5-foot-9, 145-pound projectable lean frame. Confident in the box, Burroughs had an exit velocity of 86 mph. (60.93 mph bat speed average). (19.18 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced athletic stance with a small load, then uses a leg kick. Has a simple loose swing plane, efficient bat speed and good extension on his finish. He produced some loud contact and found multiple barrels. Line drive approach. Solid while in the infield, made throws up to 79 mph; has a quick clean exchange, athletic rhythmic feet, and soft sure hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Showed consistent accuracy to the base with a high ¾ slot and a compact arm action. Clocked a time of 7.87 in the 60-yard dash.


Hayden Cockman C / 3B / JW Mitchell, FL / 2022

6-foot, 200-pound physical mature build. Advanced at the plate, the right-handed hitter was ranked 2nd with an exit velocity of 98 mph. (68.99 mph bat speed average). (20.44 mph hand speed average). Starts in a crouched wide stance with a controlled tight load, then uses a quick stride. Has explosive bat speed, simple loose swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found lots of barrels with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Solid when throwing from the outfield, he showed off his strong arm with throws at velocities of 90 mph;showed consistent rhythmic feet, a fluid natural exchange, and sure hands. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. While catching, he made strong, efficient throws to second at velocities up to 79 mph; had athletic consistent footwork, twitchy consistent hands, and a quick clean exchange. showed his ability to throw runners out with an efficient pop time of 1.92-2.00. Staggered setup with some flexibility. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used an-over-the-top slot and a loose arm action. Recorded a 60 time of 7.03 at the event.


Zachary Crawford SS / 2B / JW Mitchell, FL / 2022

5-foot-11, 165-pound lean long frame. Smooth at the plate, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 95 mph. (65.70 mph bat speed average). (21.89 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced athletic stance with a smooth small load, then uses a short stride. Bat speed is above average, displays an uphill loose swing plane and high finish. He barreled up multiple balls with loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Confident in the infield, his best throw was registered at 78 mph; has choppy rhythmic feet, sure consistent hands, and a clean fluid exchange. Fields the ball deep, movements laterally were athletic. Used a longer arm action with a ¾ slot while showing consistent accuracy to the base. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.06. 


William Davignon RHP / SS / Sunlake, FL / 2023

6-foot, 130-pound projectable lanky frame. Projectable at the plate, Davignon's best exit velocity was 84 mph. (59.44 mph bat speed average). (20.77 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced athletic stance with a controlled arm bar load, then uses a leg kick. Had a simple upward swing plane, developing bat speed and high finish. Through his round he found some barrels with loud contact. Base hit approach. Solid while in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 77 mph; has consistent developing feet, sure hands, and a natural exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were average. Capable on the mound, showed consistent arm speed with a high ¾ arm angle and a quick arm action. Up-tempo type pitcher who shows decent effort. Has even shoulder with an strong balance point. Lands soft with a clean finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 76-80 mph; shows late action and consistent control with sharp movement. (Max spin 2275; Avg 2188). Nick DelNegro LHP / JW Mitchell, FL / 2022

5-foot-10, 155-pound lean proportional build. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.4. Confident on the mound, using a loose arm action he showed quick arm speed from a high ¾ arm angle. Up-tempo type pitcher who shows easy effort. Showed athletic balance point and in line shoulders. Lands square with a falling off finish. Sat with his fastball at 75-76 mph with a max of 77 mph; has consistent control and cutting action. (Max spin 1991; Avg 1891). Landon Dorman RHP / SS / Palm Harbor University, FL / 2023

5-foot-10, 140-pound lanky long build. Capable in the box, Dorman had a max exit velocity of 77 mph. (53.79 mph bat speed average). (19.20 mph hand speed average). Began in a tall quiet stance with a small slow load, then used a big leg kick. Has a short loose swing plane, efficient bat speed and good extension on his finish. Through the round he found multiple barrels with some loud contact. Line drive approach. Confident in the infield, his best throw was registered at 74 mph; showed sure consistent hands, rhythmic choppy feet, and a natural clean exchange. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a quick arm action and a high ¾ slot. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.58. Capable on the mound, showed good arm speed with a quick arm action and a high ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who shows decent effort. Showed athletic balance point with in line shoulders. Lands square with a clean finish. Threw his fastball 76-77 mph with a max of 78 mph; has slight running action and arm side control with heavy movement. (Max spin 2168; Avg 2047). His 11/5 curveball (68-69) shows command around the zone and gradual action. (Max spin 2312; Avg 2272). 


Nathan Gibboney OF / RHP / Forest, FL / 2023

6-foot-1, 185-pound mature solid build. Confident in the box, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 90 mph. (62.29 mph bat speed average). (18.92 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced athletic stance with a tight quick load, then uses a short stride. Has above average bat speed, upward loose swing plane and a back foot finish. He created a lot of loud contact and found multiple barrels. Aggressive approach. Solid in the outfield, he showed the ability to make throws to the bases at 78 mph; has sure consistent hands, choppy rhythmic feet, and a natural fluid exchange. Movements laterally were quick and he fields the ball out front. Decent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot with a longer arm action. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.49. 


Gavin Grant 1B / LHP / Creekside, FL / 2022

6-foot, 160-pound lean athletic frame. Athletic during batting practice, Grant had an exit velocity of 95 mph. (66.78 mph bat speed average). (24.63 mph hand speed average). Started in an athletic open stance with a choppy arm bar load, then used a leg kick. Bat speed was raw, displayed a level loose swing plane and level finish. He barreled up multiple balls with a lot of loud contact. Line drive approach. Solid in the infield, his best throw was recorded at 73 mph; has athletic fluid feet, consistent soft hands, and a natural fluid exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a quick arm action and a high ¾ slot. Showed his athleticism during the event with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.72. 


Jose Gutierrez 2B / SS / Bloomingdale, FL / 2021

5-foot-10, 175-pound physical athletic build. Solid during batting practice, Gutierrez clocked an exit velocity of 91 mph. (66.82 mph bat speed average). (19.65 mph hand speed average). C.J. Koenck OF / RHP / Seffner Christian Academy, FL / 2023

5-foot-9, 150-pound lean proportional build. Confident at the plate, Koenck's best exit velocity was 89 mph. (64.44 mph bat speed average). (21.53 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced athletic stance with a tight quick load, then used a long stride. Has efficient bat speed, simple loose swing plane and high finish. Found multiple barrels with loud contact. Jake Latek RHP / 3B / IMG Academy, FL / 2022

6-foot, 165-pound long lean frame. Raw in the box, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 91 mph. (63.53 mph bat speed average). (22.36 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced tall stance with a tight choppy load, then used a leg kick. Bat speed was raw, used a short swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found some barrels with a lot of loud contact. Line drive approach. Capable while in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 77 mph; had a clean natural exchange, choppy consistent footwork, and consistent hands. Fielded the ball out front with average movement laterally. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot and a compact arm action. Recorded a 60 time of 7.44 at the event. Fluid on the mound, showing consistent arm speed he had a high ¾ arm angle and a loose arm action. Feel type pitcher who uses decent effort. Tall balance point with even shoulders. Lands soft with a clean finish. Sat with his fastball at 72-77 mph and topped out at 79 mph; has a straight fastball that shows consistent command and tight action. (Max spin 2007; Avg 1812). William Merrix OF / RHP / Lawton Chiles , FL / 2022

6-foot-1, 190-pound long athletic build. Solid during batting practice, Merrix clocked an exit velocity of 92 mph. (66.65 mph bat speed average). (20.05 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced athletic stance with a controlled low load, then used a short stride. Bat speed was quick, displayed a short uphill swing plane and high finish. Antonio Ruiz C / Royal Palm Beach, FL / 2021

5-foot-8, 175-pound solid physical build. Confident in the box, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 89 mph. (64.79 mph bat speed average). (20.49 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced athletic stance with a quick high load, then used a small leg kick stride. Bat speed is quick, uses a short level swing plane and good extension on his finish. He barreled up multiple balls with loud contact. Line drive approach. Behind the plate, his best recorded throw to second was clocked at 68 mph; showed sure hands, consistent feet, and a natural clean exchange. recorded a pop time of 2.22-2.34. Daniel Sastre C / SS / Home School, FL / 2024

5-foot-11, 160-pound lean long build. Solid during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 91 mph. (66.12 mph bat speed average). (19.40 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced athletic stance with a tight compact load, then used a controlled leg kick stride. Bat speed was quick efficient, displayed a loose uphill swing plane and good extension on his finish. He produced loud contact and found lots of barrels. Gap to gap approach. Smooth in the infield, his best throw was registered at 81 mph; showed smooth rhythmic feet, a quick clean exchange, and soft sure hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Behind the plate, throw downs to second topped out at 73 mph; has twitchy sure hands, fluid feet, and a quick natural exchange. displayed next-level catching ability by boasting a 1.94-2.04 pop time. A lot of flexibility and wide setup. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot and a quick compact arm action. Clocked a 60 time of 7.48 at the event. 


Nate Selmont OF / 1B / IMG Academy , FL / 2022

5-foot-10, 190-pound solid mature frame. Advanced at the plate, Selmont was ranked 3rd with an exit velocity of 96 mph. (69.23 mph bat speed average). (19.11 mph hand speed average). Started in a tall active stance with a quick low load, then used a short controlled stride. Had explosive bat speed, short loose swing plane and high finish. Barreled up multiple balls with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Capable In the infield, has sure hands, choppy feet, and a clean exchange. AJ Sierra OF / OF / Lakeland , FL / 2024

Began in a balanced athletic stance with a smooth compact load, then used a controlled small leg kick stride. Bat speed is above average, uses an uphill loose swing plane and high finish. Jace Trautner C / RHP / JW Mitchell, FL / 2022

Owen Wilfong RHP / Creekside, FL / 2022

6-foot, 185-pound long physical frame. Solid confident on the mound, showed consistent arm speed, also used a quick compact arm action with a high ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses high effort. During his delivery balance point is tall with uphill shoulders. Lands closed with recoil finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 80-83 mph with a max of 84 mph; has a heavy fastball that shows control around the zone and hard action. (Max spin 2389; Avg 2159). Huston Wynne LHP / Venice, FL / 2022

6-foot, 180-pound long lanky frame. Projectable on the mound, showing good arm speed he had a ¾ arm angle and a longer loose arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses some effort. Displays even shoulders and a tall balance point. Lands square and soft with a clean finish. Sat with his fastball at 79-80 mph and topped out at 81 mph; shows consistent control and slight running action with sharp movement. (Max spin 2197; Avg 2075). Throws a 2/8 curveball (68-70) with command low in the zone and slurvey action. (Max spin 2386; Avg 2309). His heavy changeup (72-73) had tailing action and arm side control.
