Tate Powers Past Pace 10-5
April 13, 2018
Pensacola, FL-- Pace would jump out to a lead about as quickly as you can, with 2018 South Alabama recruit Bennett Shell driving the first pitch of the game over the right-center field fence for a home run. Pace would then add another run in the second inning thanks to an error to leadoff the inning, who would eventually score on a line-drive sacrifice fly to center by Blake Cordova.
Starting pitcher 2020 Cole Fryman would settle in after the first two innings and put on a solid performance for Tate. Fryman, a lanky and projectable right-hander, worked mostly 80-82 mph with his fastball. While the velocity isn’t there, he gets quality extension and the ball gets on the hitter. I would expect him to see some big velociity jumps with added strength.
As for the Tate offense, they would be held in check earl by starting pitcher Ty Kirchharr. Kirchharr is a long-limbed right-hander with a lot of moving parts. The delivery was deceptive and fastball worked 83-85 mph. Tate would eventually score in the second on a wild pitch and tie the game in the fourth on an RBI double from 2020 Darrien McDowell. The offense would open the game up for Tate in the fifth. A leadoff double from 2018 Ole Miss recruit Trent Jeffcoat would get things going for the Aggies. A hit-by-pitch and an error would load the bases before Jeffcoat would score on a walk. With the bases loaded and a new arm on the mound, Blake Anderson would hit the first pitch he saw for a grand slam home run and give the Aggies a 7-2 lead. The Aggies would then add three more in the seventh thanks to a pair of errors, making it 10-2. Pace would attempt to scratch their way back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on one hit, but would fall short 10-5.
Scout Notes
Bennett Shell, OF, Pace (2018)
South Alabama recruit. The stocky center fielder showed his present strength in his first at-bat home run. The swing is short and compact and uses the lower half well. Walked a pair and finished 1-2, but shows a quality approach and the swing is consistently short.
Ty Kirchharr, RHP, Pace (2019)
Long-limbed, lanky he has a lot of moving parts in the delivery. The arm action can get a little long and slings it at times, but the ball comes out of the hand well. Worked 83-86 mph with the fastball that showed some late action and the funky delivery has some deception. Showed a feel for a changeup at 73-76 mph.
Reid Halfacre, OF, Tate (2018)
South Alabama recruit. Going to South Alabama to play football, but the athleticism shows up on the baseball field. Twitchy athlete with a compact swing and some present bat speed. Above average runner as well.
Blake Anderson, INF, Tate (2018)
Uncommitted the 2018 infielder was the designated hitter. There is some length in the swing, but also present strength. That showed in the grand slam home run in his third at-bat.
Trent Jeffcoat, INF, Tate (2018)
Ole Miss recruit. Playing third base, but moves well and can see being an above average defender at second at the next level. Offensively he shows and advance approach and bat-to-ball skills. He left-handed swing is simple, level and compact. He works in rhythm and stays balanced throughout the swing. Was 2-3 with a double and a single. There is room to add strength and will grow into gap-to-gap power.
Cole Fryman, RHP, Tate (2020)
Lanky and projectable right-hander, worked mostly 80-82 mph with his fastball. While the velocity isn’t there, he gets quality extension and the ball gets on the hitter. I would expect him to see some big velociity jumps with added strength. The arm works free and easy ad is fairly mechanically sound. The ball come out of his hand well and mixed in a curveball at 71-73 mph with some potential.
Mason Land, SS,Tate (2019)
Mississippi State recruit. While he went 0-4 you can see the swing will work. Balanced and comfortable, he turns the barrel and shows above average bat speed. He is rangy at short, with athletic actions. Will be a high follow for 2019.
