Tournament Of Stars Standouts

By Nathan Rode

We brought you extensive coverage of the Tournament of Stars last week and are wrapping it up with a final look at some of the event’s standouts. Below are 15 players that made an impression at the six-day event. Emphasis was placed on the players’ tools, but performance was factored in, thus the reason you don’t see players like RHP Beau Burrows (Weatherford HS, TX) or RHP Donnie Everett (Clarksville HS, TN) making the cut. Burrows has electric stuff with his low-90s fastball and sharp breaking ball, but he walked six and allowed eight runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings over two appearances. Everett also has good stuff, but struggled to find the zone as well.

This is not a definite ranking of prospects at the event either. It’s a snapshot of the players that stood out. They are listed alphabetically.

Luken Baker, RHP, Oak Ridge HS, TX
It’s fitting that Baker is from Texas, with his big, strong frame at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds. His size translate to power stuff as he sat 89-92 mph, touching 93. There’s some effort to his delivery and he didn’t always finish, frequently missing to his arm side and hanging his breaking ball at times. His curveball sits 79-82, flashing good spin and power break. He also mixed in a straight changeup at 81-83. A Texas Christian recruit, Baker pitch 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two walks and five hits while striking out five.
