Prep Baseball Report

Unsigned Junior Spotlight: OF Ben Brown

Rocco Iervasi
Florida Director of Operations/Area Scout

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. Over the last two months, we have been spotlighting several uncommitted seniors to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level in 2021. This month, we will move on to uncommitted 2021's who will be heading into their senior summer.

Next up is uncommitted 2021 OF Ben Brown (North Port). Brown is an athletic outfielder at 5-foot-10, 155 pounds. He made our Second Team Preseason All-State team in 2020. He ranks No. 131 in the PBR Florida Class of 2021.

Scouting Report

1/18/20

At 5-foot-10, 150 pounds, Brown showcased athleticism and quick twitch ability in the outfield and at the plate. That long frame suits him well in the outfield as he runs well and cuts balls off in the gap. He short arms the ball a bit with a quick release but shows plenty of arm and carry on the ball. Brown turns on the ball at the plate, with fast hands that clear well with the hips. Furthermore, he extends through the ball well, especially to the pull side, coupling bat head speed with back spun line drives that had enough juice to split the gaps.

6/15/19

Uncommitted 2021 playing up a division, 5-foot-10, 150 pounds. Quick runner who beat out a couple infield hits. Base stealer with good instincts on the basepaths.

2/08/19

At 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, he has a slender athletic frame with length in limbs and overall upside. Spray-the-gaps hitter with quick hands. Strong enough defensively to provide versatility value between 3B and 2B until he reaches his offensive potential. There is feel to hit and the path works and overall will continue to make big strides with strength and maturity. Defensively, he works under control, hands and feet work well and is a sound overall defender.

1/19/19

Listed at 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, but the frame looks longer and with more strength. Still has a lot of room to add strength and mature, but really stood out defensively. Works confidently and under control in the infield. Hands and feet work well and in rhythm. Offensively, he has a small leg kick and works in rhythm as well. Tends to cut himself off at times, but there is bat speed and feel for the barrel and as he learns to get through the baseball and continues to mature there is a high offensive ceiling.
