Prep Baseball Report

Unsigned Senior Spotlight: C Isaac Ferrer

Rocco Iervasi
Florida Director of Operations/Area Scout

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. This spring, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted seniors to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level in 2021.

Next up is uncommitted 2020 C Isaac Ferrer (Calvary Christian Academy). Ferrer is an athletic catcher who has stood out at several PBR events in the past. Aggressive hitter that handles a very talented pitching staff at Calvary Christian. Ferrer is ranked No. 197 in the PBR Florida Class of 2020 rankings.

Scouting Report

11/17/19

Athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds. Moves well laterally behind the plate with strong hands receiving. Average footwork on throws to 2nd base with average arm and accuracy on throws with pop times 2.15-2.21. Balanced setup at the plate with a short stride toe tap to create rhythm with a line drive and gap to gap swing.

8/06/19

The physical 5-foot-10, 180 pound catcher shows above average defensive actions. Some twitch behind the plate, hands work and is a sound blocker and receiver. Offensively, there is some steepness, but is aggressive through the zone with quick hands. Present bat speed with some power potential.

2/11/19

Strength throughout the 5-foot-10, 180 pound frame. Defensively, is fundamentally sound. Gets in a good position to receive and has strong wrists and some present hip mobility. The footwork is clean and throws were consistently accurate. Will need to continue to improve arm strength and transfer to cut down the pop times some. Offensively, the strength plays. He clears the back side, and looks to pull and lift the baseball. There is strength and bat speed and had an exit velocity of 91 mph.

10/11/18

Uncommitted, the 5-foot-10, 180 pound catcher has a typical stocky, strong catcher frame. Defensively, he has solid actions, while having present strength, he has flexibility and shows the his lateral agility in his blocking skills. The pop times weren’t the best we have seen and his best of the day was 2.15, but you can see the arm strength and transfer, he topped out at 76 mph. Offensively, he was a bit out of sync in BP, but when he gets his load on time, he uses his strong lower half well and attacks the baseball. There is some length, but there is bat speed and strength and shows pull side power potential, topping out at 90 mph exit velocity.

8/22/18

A stocky, strong lower half, 5-foot-10, 180 pound right handed hitting catcher. Defensively, e block, moves and receives well and has all of the actions of an above average defender with pop times ranging from 2.14-2.17 that we accurate and on the bag. Offensively, he uses the strong lower half well. Clears the back side and is aggressive to the pull side. Had an exit velocity of 90 mph and present strength with power potential.

6/23/18

Stocky,5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Offensively, he works with rhythm and natural uphill swing. He has a small leg kick, clears the backside well and creates above average bat speed. The strength and bat speed translate to 90 mph exit velocity. Defensively, he has present athleticism, with a quick, clean transfer and throws have carry with pop times ranging form 2.0-2.08. Overall  tools to be above average defender with gap to gap power.

1/27/18

Present strength with room to add to his frame currently standing at 5-foot-10, 165 lbs. Offensively, he shows ability to drive ball with authority when he squares it up. Makes hard contact and registered an 86 mph exit velocity in the cage. Behind the plate he displayed a good hands and a strong arm which topped out at 77 mph on his throws to the bag. Clocked in at 7.63 seconds for his 60 yard dash time.

1/13/18

Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds with a physical lower half. At the plate starts from a very open stance with a simple approach and big leg kick for his load. Made consistent contact and showed a feel for the barrel with multiple lines drives to the pull side and left-centerfield gap during batting practice. As he continues to mature and add to his frame, he should see a jump in power to the pull side. Registered an 84 mph exit velocity in the cage. Behind the plate he registered pop times in the 2.02-2.08 second range and his throws topping out at 77 mph down to second. He sits somewhat upright, but the hands work well and projects as an above average defensive catcher.
