Prep Baseball Report

Unsigned Senior Spotlight: RHP Austin Tanner

Rocco Iervasi
Florida Director of Operations/Area Scout

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. This spring, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted seniors to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level in 2021.

Next up is uncommitted 2020 RHP Austin Tanner (Windermere Prep). Tanner is an athletic right-hander at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds. He stood out this past summer at the Top Prospect Games Jacksonville.

7/06/19

6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed pitcher, long, lean frame, room for continued development. Short arm action with a low draw, ¾ slot, easy effort. Quick rhythm, drop and drive delivery, works on-line, lands square, finishes upright crossing over. Fastball sat 82-85 with run. 6/23/18

Uncommitted. Projectable lean, athletic build. Quick tempo delivery on the mound. Does a good job utilizing his lower half by sitting on his back leg down the hill. Fastball worked 81-83 touching 84 mph. Fairly straight, but has some life when thrown down in the zone. The curveball worked 64 mph. Tanner has plenty of upside to be a strong follow.

1/27/18

Uncommitted. Slender, athletic build on lanky 6-foot, 165 pound frame. Room to fill out. Athletic actions from the mound with a  simple, up-tempo delivery. Fastball mostly sat in the 78-80 mph range with horizontal fade. Mixed in a 68-71 mph curveball with 11/5 shape, sweeping action along with a 69-72 mph change up. Shows sharpness on the fastball and the offspeed stuff will continue to improve with physical development.

1/13/18

He has an athletic frame and the arm works quick. It can drag behind him at times when he doesn’t clear the back side. As he learns to clear the back side and engage the front side, the arm will work more freely and they velocity should jump from the current 78-80 mph. He shows a more short slider than curveball at 68-70 mph and a changeup at 69-72 mph. There is potential with the athleticism and as he grows and gets stronger.

8/20/17

Stands at 5-foot-11, 155 pounds with a lean, athletic build. From the mound he has an up-tempo windup with a big leg kick along with some extension out in front on his delivery. Throws from the high ¾ slot with short, quick arm action. Attacks hitters. Fastball mostly sat 78-80 mph along with a 69-70 mph curveball that showed shape. Clock in at 7.55 seconds for his 60 yard dash time. From the outfield he took good routes to the ball and showed carry on his throws that topped out at 79 mph. In the infield he fielded the ball with confidence and under control with accurate throws to the bag topping out at 74 mph. At the plate he shows a short, quick swing through the zone with line drive potential. His athleticism and presence on the mound will continue to make him a good follow.

6/21/17

Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 150 pounds the right-hander has a projectable frame and could see a big jump in velo as he continues to grow. Currently sits at 75-79 with a quick arm action and very good command of the zone. Showed poise with good tempo on the mound. Also mixed in a 67-68 mph curveball.

6/01/17

The high waisted right handed pitcher has a long, lean projectable frame. From a high 3/4 slot he threw strikes with a fastball that ranged from 78-80 mph that he located down in the zone. He also mixed a curveball at 69-70 and a changeup at 67-68 mph. He has some drop-and-drive in his delivery that limits some of the tilt in the fastball. As he logs innings and learns to stay over his backside he should see a jump.

1/08/17

The 5-foot-10, 145 pound right handed hitting RHP/3B shows a short, level swing with a good lower half, Could clear hips better, but level line drive swing will continue to improve with strength. With an up temp, athletic wind up, the fastball ranges from 77-78 mph.
