GHSA Class 2A Preseason Top-10

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

The 2022 GHSA baseball season is less than a week away. Which means it is time to unveil our class-by-class top-10 rankings.

+ No. 1 Vidalia

The Indians turned in a dominant regular season in 2021, sweeping region play, but had an early exit in the playoffs. They enter 2022 returning the bulk of their lineup, including multiple impact players across the diamond.

RHP/SS Caden Spivey (2022; Notre Dame) is potentially the most talented arm in Class 2A. He will be joined once again in the rotation by RHP/OF Bryson Whited (2022; Georgia College & State University). The wealth of arm talent continues with LHP/OF Jordan Walden (2022; Georgia Southwestern State), RHP Bryce Morley (2022; Uncommitted)

Caden Spivey

While many of the aforementioned players will lend their services at the plate, the offense will be led by 1B Ty Dalley (2022; Mercer) and C Hughes Graham (2022: East Georgia State). Dalley has a powerful left-handed swing and Graham compliments it with power from the right-side. C/RHP Walker Moncus (2023; Uncommitted) saw significant action as a sophomore and will look to take the next step forward.

All the pieces are there for the Indians to be the early front runner and favorite to make a deep run in May.

+ No. 2 Jeff Davis

The Yellowjackets rode their young pitching staff all the way to a state championship last season. The 2022 staff should be even better.

RHP/SS Duke Stone (2024; Georgia) had a big 2021 and established himself as the top right-handed pitcher in Georgia’s 2024 class. Stone is ultra projectable at 6-foot-5. He already has a mid-to-upper 80s fastball and a swing and miss breaking ball to go along with it. Stone isn’t the only promising sophomore the Yellowjackets have either. RHP Alex Mason (2024; Uncommitted) is another mid 80s arm with a bright future. RHP/1B Cameron Williams (2022; Uncommitted) will provide senior leadership and big game experience.

Duke Stone

The bats of C Matthew Glass (2022; ABAC) and Williams will provide the power in the lineup. SS/RHP Trenton Clance (2022; Uncommitted) is back to man the middle of the infield.

+ No. 3 Lovett

The state runners up in 2021 will be back in the mix. The Lions have a good mix of returning talent coupled with some newcomers that could put them over the top in 2022.

The offense is going to be tough to deal with for any opposing pitcher. SS Kai Cunningham (2022; Uncommitted), SS/RHP Will Prigge (2022; Tulane) and OF Robert Mitchell (2022; Uncommitted) lead a dynamic lineup that will be capable of putting up some big numbers. The return of 3B Anderson Beavor (2023; Uncommitted), OF Logan Givens (2022; Uncommitted), and C Charles Lindsey (2022; Uncommitted) to the lineup will give the Lions further confidence.

Prigge will pull double duty as part of the pitching staff. RHP Hayden Bernard (2023; Uncommitted) will take a more prominent role. The Lions have an interesting group of sophomores that could prove pivotal to their overall success.

+ No. 4 Thomasville

The Bulldogs will sport a deep and experienced lineup in 2022, and look poised to make the jump come May.

Pitching will be the focal point for Thomasville. LHP Jacob Jordan (2023; Uncommitted) is one of the top southpaws in the 2023 class, and he will be counted on. LHP/OF Gabe Duncan (2022; Uncommitted), SS/RHP Anderson Everett (2023; Uncommitted) and a whole bullpen of arms that saw innings last season will have the Bulldogs very comfortable on the mound. C Witt Wetherington (2022; Troy) was a huge part of the offense last season and will steer the ship in 2022.

+ No. 5 Pace Academy

The Knights will go as far as SS/RHP RJ Austin (2022; Vanderbilt) and OF Jae Williams (2022; UAB) can take them. Austin is one of the state’s top draft prospects. He is an electric athlete with explosive power at the plate and a low 90s fastball to go along with it. Austin is one of the few players in the state who can single handedly win a game.

RJ Austin

What makes Pace so dangerous is how much support Austin will get. Williams will be at the top of the order. OF/LHP Paul Ramseur (2022; Washington & Lee), OF Lawrence Jordan (2022; Uncommitted), 1B Michael Lynch (2022; Uncommitted), 2B Greyson O’Berry (2022; Uncommitted), SS Ryan Reiss (2024; Uncommitted), and SS/3B Tucker Ausband (2024; Uncommitted) all saw regular time last year. There is no lack of experience in the Knights lineup.

The lineup gets even deeper with the arrival of SS Terrence Kiel (2024; Uncommitted) via transfer from Campbell. Kiel is a dynamic prospect who will add another impact bat and more athleticism to an already very athletic lineup.

+ No. 6 Bleckley County

The Royals look to be the favorite in Region 3 and a contender in the postseason. Much of the team’s success will rest on the shoulders of C/RHP JR Fordham (2022; Augusta), SS/RHP Matthew Bland (2022; Uncommitted) and RHP/1B Carter Brannon (2022; Uncommitted). Fordham can be a difference maker in a multitude of ways, from his defensive ability as a backstop, to his bat at the plate, to his prowess on the mound.

Look for members of the junior class to step up and fill in the gaps left by graduation. C/RHP Eli Mullis (2023; Uncommitted) and RHP/OF James Fordham (2023; Uncommitted) are prime candidates.

+ No. 7 Callaway

The Cavaliers got hot in the postseason and made a run, but fell short to eventual state champs Jeff Davis. Two-way standouts RHP/SS Justin Moore (2022; Lurleen B. Wallace) and RHP/SS Tucker Starling (2022; Central Alabama) return to lead Callaway on another run. Moore is a workhorse and has seemingly always risen to the occasion throughout his prep career.

Moore will be a big part of the offense in addition to heading up the pitching staff. 3B/RHP Bryce Hubbard (2024; Uncommitted) made waves as a freshman with his big bat. Hubbard will be an integral part of the lineup for the next few years.

Bryce Hubbard

+ No. 8 Pepperell

Pepperell has the front line starting pitching to be a team you do not want to see late in the year. RHP/OF Landen Loyd (2022; Georgia Highland) and LHP Dakota Corntassel (2022; Southern Wesleyan) form one of class’s top one-two punches. Loyd is hard throwing righty, while Corntassel brings a different look as a crafty lefty.

+ No. 9 Bremen

The Blue Devils have a strong core of seniors led by OF/RHP Blake Matthews (2022; Troy football). Matthews has been a fixture in the top of the order for Bremen for the past few seasons. His senior leadership and experience will prove vital as the Blue Devils look to several underclassmen to step up.

RHP/3B Jake Steed (2024; Uncommitted), SS Easton White (2024; Uncommitted) and LHP/OF Aiden Price (2025; Uncommitted) have all shown the upside to be impact players this year.

Aiden Price

+ No. 10 Model

Region 7 will be a fight, as Model has the talent to challenge Pepperell for the title. SS/RHP Davis Chastain (2022; Georgia State) is back to man the middle of the infield and lead the pitching staff. The power bat of C Jacob Ashley (2022; Uncommitted) will provide the bang in the lineup.

There will be some holes to fill, but the development of SS/RHP Jace Armstrong (2023; Uncommitted), OF Landon Cantrell (2022; Uncommitted), 2B Dillon Silver (2023; Uncommitted) and OF Brant Pace (2023; Uncommitted) should help cover them.
