Georgia Future Games: Blast Motion Swing Metrics

One of the important tools Prep Baseball Report is starting to implement at its events is the use of Blast Motion sensors. During batting practice, the Blast Motion sensors measure Swing and Impact Metrics across several categories. Swing metrics measure pre-impact mechanics centered around plane, connection, and rotation while Impact metrics measure pre-impact performance outcomes based on ball contact.
At the 2020 PBR Future Games, all hitters were hooked up to blast sensors for there on the field BP rounds during their individual showcases workouts. We were able to collect valuable swing & impact metrics on many of the top uncommitted players in the country. We will be able to share this data with coaches & scouts from around the country as well as help players identify areas of development.
Bat Speed
Bat Speed is the observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.*Pro Avg: 66-78 mph - College Avg: 66-75 mph - High School Avg: 60-70 mph*

Peak Hand Speed
Peak Hand Speed is the observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.*Pro Avg: 23-29 mph - College Avg: 21-24 mph - High School Avg: 19-22 mph*

Rotational Acceleration
Rotation measures how quickly your bat accelerates into the swing plane. Rotation is a good indicator of how you build bat speed by sequencing properly vs. pulling the bat with your hands. Power
The average Power generated during the swing is found from the effective mass of the bat, the Bat Speed at impact, and the average acceleration during the downswing. Power is measured in Watts. Higher Power is achieved when a hitter is able to swing a heavier bat and accelerate it to higher speeds.

Vertical Bat Angle
Vertical Bat Angle is the angle of the bat with respect to horizontal at the moment of impact. Vertical Bat Angle is measured in degrees and provides the location of the barrel of the bat relative to the knob of the bat at impact. Vertical Bat Angle will be zero when the barrel of the bat and the knob are parallel to the ground.
