GHSA Playoffs: McIntosh Edges Woodward Academy in 5A Playoff Opening Series

PBR Georgia Staff

College Park, GA - Two of the most evenly-matched teams in the 5A opening round of the playoffs squared-off in what was a great two games of baseball, Wednesday night. The War Eagles of Woodward Academy hosted the Chiefs of McIntosh. McIntosh took game one by a score of 3-2, and won game two by a score of 3-1.

Game One

Game one saw a pitching duel on both sides of the field as '21 RHP Davidson recruit, Braxton Roop, got the start for McIntosh, and Uncommitted '21 RHP Aaron Corbin for Woodward. Early on, it looked like this would be a high-scoring game, as both teams put up runs early, but both arms settled in and kept the runs to a minimum as the game progressed.

The action started in the top of the first inning as '23 SS Georgia commit, Trey King, lead off the game with a walk. He would come around to score on a Joe Pressel RBI SAC fly.

Woodward Academy would answer in the bottom of the second inning. Uncommitted '21 Banks Snellings would leadoff the inning with a single, and would come around to score on a wild-pitch. After a double by Uncommitted '21 C, Mark Gallups, Joey Casey would bring him in on a chopper in front of the plate.

Down 2-1 in the third inning, McIntosh would put two runs up in the inning to take the lead - one that would remain for the rest of the game. '24 1B Connor Soper would tie the game with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single by '22 Joe Glozier.

Aaron Corbin did a nice job throughout the game with challenging hitters, and mixing speeds efficiently. He would go 7 IP, 4 K, 3 H, 2 R. Corbin picked up big strikeouts with the bases-loaded and looked to be unfazed in the high-pressure situations.

Game Two

We saw another low-scoring event in game two with '21 RHP Young Harris recruit, Bradley Grasser, on the mound for McIntosh. Uncommitted '21 RHP, Henry Nichols, got the start for Woodward.

Brad Grasser controlled most of the game with steady command of both fastballs and breaking balls.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when '22 MIF Washington State commit, Chandler Pollard lined a double to the gap. Pollard would steal third base, and would get brought in on an RBI single from '22 Illinois commit Elgin Bennett.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, McIntosh would erase the one-run-lead when Brad Grasser chopped a ball to SS to bring in a run. Another run would score on a Woodward misplay to give McIntosh a 2-1 lead.

Henry Nichols used a steady dose of off-speed pitches to induce weak contact for most of the game, and worked around baserunners well. Nichols went 6 IP, 3 K, 7 H, 3 R for Woodward Academy.
