PBR Georgia Player of the Week: RHP Dawson Brown & 3B Trace Cate

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

The fourth week of the now suspended season came to a conclusion for most late last week, others were able to complete the entire week and play through the weekend. There were plenty of games that took place and another week of gaudy stats from a number of players. This week, we award Pitcher of the Week to RHP Dawson Brown (Tattnall Square; Georgia Tech). The award for Hitter of the Week goes to uncommitted 2020 3B/OF Trace Cate (Hillgrove).

We got a first-hand look at Brown early in the season at the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament, and it come as no surprise that he has been thriving this season. Brown is a big reason that Tattnall Square stands at 11-4, serving as their ace and a top of the order bat. Facing a one loss ACE Charter team, he put together a masterpiece on the mound. Brown went the distance, picking up the win in a seven inning complete game shutout, striking out 12 batters, nine in a row at one point, and allowing one hit, to the leadoff man, and one walk.

2/14/20 - Georgia Tech commit. 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed pitcher, loose, athletic build. Works out of the stretch, short, loose arm action out of a sidearm slot, hops down the mound on his finish. Fastball sat 84-86, running action, created weak weak contact with. Slider, 76-78, sharp sweeping action. Facing a predominantly left-handed lineup, lived on the outer half with his fastball and then busted his slider in on the hands. - Georgia Scouting Director Phil Kerber

Our Hitter of the Week, Trace Cate, remains uncommitted, but from everything we have seen indicates that will not be for long. We got our first look at Cate last spring when he was hitting at the top of the order for a loaded Hillgrove team that made it all the way to the 7A finals before falling to Parkview. Over the summer, Cate his way to South Carolina to participate in the Uncommitted Senior Games. Cate posted top numbers at the event in a number of categories, running a 6.98 60, throwing 83 from both the outfield and across the infield, and putting up an 88 mph exit velocity. Eight months later, and it appears Cate has made significant strides. In a three game sweep of Kennesaw Mountain last week, Cate went 7-for-12 with a triple, four runs batted in, three runs scored and three stolen bases.

3/5/20 - Uncommitted. 6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting third baseman and outfielder, high waist, athletically built. Takes an open stance, long reverse toe-tap stride, high hands load back while he brings barrel vertical, good balance throughout. Ga-to-gap type hitter, smooth swing, barrel works mostly uphill, looks to elevate and drive the ball. Against Lambert, made consistent hard contact, collected two hits, a walk, and three runs batted in, in for four at-bats, including a triple and an infield single. - Georgia Scouting Director Phil Kerber
