Preseason All-State: Preview

On Saturday, Jan. 11, PBR Georgia will host its inaugural Preseason All-State at the all-turf indoor facility of Rountree Recreation in Hiram, GA. The invite-only showcase brings together some of the state’s best talent in its 2020 and 2021 classes.

Nearly 50 of Georgia’s ranked seniors and juniors will meet in Hiram, GA, on Saturday, many of whom remain uncommitted. For a look at this year’s roster, click here. For more information on the showcase’s format and structure, click here.

Around the country each state within Prep Baseball Report hosts this same event, highlighting some of the best talent in their coverage area. Georgia’s event will be no different.

In our first year, the No. 37-ranked 2020 OF Darryl Buggs (Heritage-Conyers; UAB) will be joining us. We got our first look at Buggs this summer when he was still an uncommitted prospect at the PBR National Championships. Buggs impressed with his twitchy athleticism that he utilized well in his swing and even more so when he got on the bases. Time and time again Buggs got the first step on pitchers and swiped bags left and right. To put it lightly, when he got on base, he was an absolute nightmare for opposing pitchers.

The No. 40-ranked senior will be there, too: RHP Reid Fagerstrom (Northgate; Wofford). We first saw Fagerstrom at the 2018 Peach State Games when he was a big strong 6-foot-1 200-pound junior. He used his powerful frame well to run his fastball up to 91 mph and showed good feel for a slurve-like curveball and cutter-like slider. Given it has been a year and a half since we last laid eyes on him, it will be exciting to see the progress he has made.

Also joining us will be future Samford teammates: No. 48-ranked SS Garrett Howe (Hebron Christian) and No.125-ranked OF Blake Bortak (Archer). Howe is listed as a switch-hitter, but it is what he does from the left-side in particular that will carry him. We ranked him as the No. 4 left-handed hitter in the entire 2020 class. As for Bortak, he possesses high-end athleticism and natural foot speed that make him an elite defender in center field for this class. He displays smooth action all around and has quick hands at the plate.

Garrett Howe (8.12.18)

Representing the 2021 class, the top ranked prospect in attendance will be 2019 Future Gamer No. 9-ranked RHP Caleb Logerwell (Homeschool; uncommitted). Logerwell made the Future Games his coming out party this summer where he showcased one of the top breaking balls at the entire event. A knee-buckling breaking ball that played at 75-79 and featured a spin rate of 3,000 rpm. In a three inning stint he allowed zero runs and struck out five batters, gaining confidence with each batter he faced. It all culminated in his third inning when he struck out the side.

Caleb Logerwell (7.31.19)

Another 2019 Future Gamer joining Logerwell at the event will be No. 27-ranked RHP Aidan Moza (North Cobb Christian; UAB). Moza earned top performance of the night in Team Georgia’s first game of the event against Team Carolina, that was rolling, with a stunning perform. He commanded his fastball, changing eye levels well, setting up his sharp breaking ball.

One of the top left-handed hitters in his class No. 12-ranked OF James Tibbs (Pope; Florida State) will be a must see prospect when he steps to the plate. Tibbs hunts pitches at the plate and with bad man intentions. His sweet stroke and overall strength in his 6-foot, 185-pound frame allows him to drive the ball to all field.

Another top ranked, uncommitted prospect to keep an eye on will be No. 26-ranked RHP/3B Glenn Green (Sandy Creek). Green is a long, lanky 6-2, 185-pounds and maximizes that length in everything he does. A true two-way prospect, he gets it done at the plate, gaining extension through the zone and attacking the ball with controlled aggression. On the mound, he works his fastball up to 91 mph and compliments it with a tight slider.

ITINERARY

  • Check-in for Position Players, Catchers, two-way players: 11:50 AM - 12:10 PM.

    • 60-yard Dash

    • Offensive Evaluations (exit velo, mechanical analysis, batting practice)

    • Defensive Evaluations (arm strength, mobility, positional reps)

  • Check-in for Pitcher Only: 2:30 - 2:45 PM.

    • Bullpen Sessions (15-pitch session, mechanical analysis)

    • Catcher Evaluations (evaluating receiving/blocking skills)

  • Catchers will stay for both sessions.
