Prospect Watch - Calhoun Yellow Jackets

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

The spring season has begun in Georgia with tryouts recently taking place throughout the state. As part of PBR's coverage, we will be heading out this spring to cover games during the high school season, providing scouting reports, game recaps, Power25 rankings, and more. To prime our audience for that, we will be taking a look at just some of the standout prospects we have seen in our short, yet event filled time in Georgia. Today, we take a look at the Calhoun Yellow Jackets. Calhoun will feature a solid mix of veteran seniors and underclass talent as they challenge for a region title. We profile five of the underclass standouts ahead of the 2020 spring season. It is worth noting that seniors OF/LHP Ethan Crump (Berry College) and C/RHP Matthew Williams (Snead State CC) will be the upperclassmen leading the charge for the Yellow Jackets.

Calhoun Yellow Jackets

John Andrew Cash 1B / Calhoun , GA / 2021

Committed to Samford, 1B John Andrew Cash is your prototypical power hitter first baseman. Standing 6-foot-2, 210-pounds, Cash has a strong sturdy frame with advanced strength in his lower half. With a quiet, simple setup at the plate, he loads his weight back and lets his quick, strong hands do most of the work, gaining extension through the zone. The swing path is short to the ball with some incline, allowing for him to elevate and drive the ball with considerable force. Cash will no doubt be a catalyst and big run producer at the top of the order for Calhoun this season.

Parker Lester 3B / SS / Calhoun , GA / 2021

Committed to the University of Miami (OH), Lester will join forces with Cash at the top of the order and form a formidable power hitting duo. A left-handed hitter, Lester is physically imposing at 6-foot-3, 195-pounds with strength throughout his frame. His swing is somewhat rotational and his quick hands whip through the zone. With so much strength in his lower half he looks to put the ball in the air and drive it into the gaps. Lester will be another run producer for Calhoun and an extra-base hitting machine this spring.

Hagan Banks RHP / OF / Calhoun , GA / 2021

Flame thrower right-hander Hagan Banks will be leaned out to the lead the pitching staff of Calhoun. A projectable 6-foot-4, 185-pounds, Banks seemingly keeps on growing and adding strength to his frame, and it shows in his overall arm strength. Up to 92 mph this fall at LakePoint, Banks can work downhill at-times and given his overall length and velocity, gets the ball on the batter in a hurry. In the recent months he has made solid strides in improving his breaking ball, an 11/5 curveball, achieving tighter spin on the pitch, which has added sharper break to it. If Banks is clicking on all cylinders, he could be in store for a huge spring season.

Bryse Ingle RHP / 3B / Calhoun, GA / 2021

A North Alabama commit, Ingle will provide support to Banks in the Calhoun pitching staff. Pitching with a long, yet quick arm, he works out of a high 3/4 slot with effort. Sitting in the mid-80s with his fastball, Ingle utilizes three off-speed pitches with some effect. His curveball and slider have distinct shapes, and when he can locate them, will be difficult pitches to handle. His arm plays even better at the hot corner as he makes throws across the infield look easy. There is still some work to be done offensively, but Ingle has a chance to turn himself into a productive two-way prospect.

Andon Lewis 1B / RHP / Calhoun, GA / 2022

One of the most interesting underclassmen on the Calhoun roster this spring will be 1B/RHP Andon Lewis. As a primary first baseman Lewis may find it hard to see time on the infield given that John Andrew Cash sits ahead of him on the depth chart, making him a perfect candidate to be in the running as the primary designated hitter. His power at the plate is absolutely undeniable, and given the fact that his 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame still has a ways to go before he is fully physically developed, it is scary to think about what the end product could be. with an already 90+ exit velocity, Lewis' swing works long through the zone with aggressive intent, looking to drive the ball to the pull-side. On the mound, his arm works clean on the back-side to a high 3/4 slot. His fastball presently tops out at 84 mph and is complemented by a 12/6 curveball that can show depth, and a developing forkball.
