Prospect Watch - Wesleyan Wolves

The spring season has begun in Georgia with tryouts recently taking place throughout the state. As part of PBR's coverage, we will be heading out this spring to cover games during the high school season, providing scouting reports, game recaps, Power25 rankings, and more. To prime our audience for that, we will be taking a look at just some of the standout prospects we have seen in our short, yet event filled time in Georgia. Today, we take a look at the Wesleyan Wolves. Despite being a Class 1A Private School, Wesleyan has quite possibly one of the most talent rich rosters in the entire state of Georgia, and could very well hold their own against some of the largest schools in the state. We could easily profile their entire starting lineup. We profile five of their standout prospects ahead of the 2020 spring season. Not profiled, but expected to make large contributions this spring for the Wolves are: RHP Wyatt Copeland (2020, Johns Hopkins), RHP/3B Jamie LaFramboise (2020, Centre College), and No. 21-ranked 2022 SS Cooper Blauser. 

Charlie Taylor C / OF / Wesleyan, GA / 2020

One of the, if not the top, defensive catchers in Georgia's Class of 2020, Tennessee commit Charlie Taylor will be an offensive catalyst for the Wolves this spring. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound right-handed hitter has present strength in his frame and looks to show no signs of slowing down. While we have always been impressed by his defensive capabilities, it is the emergence of his right-handed power bat that has really opened eyes. Hitting from a balanced position, Taylor has little pre-pitch movement while still maintaining fluid rhythm. His hands are short and quick to the ball, letting his natural strength do the work and really shine. While the swing is mostly level, he has advanced hand-eye coordination that allows him to launch the baseball with back spin. Look for Taylor to be a defensive general and offensive standout for Wesleyan this spring.

Holden Wilder RHP / 1B / Wesleyan, GA / 2020

Committed to Wofford, Wilder is a wide-shouldered 6-foot-3, 210-pound right-handed pitcher with a strong, strudy frame. When we got our look at Wilder this fall at LakePoint, he was absolutely dominant. A predominantly fastball/curveball pitcher, he throws both for strikes with ease, and understands when and how to manipulate his breaking ball. The fastball plays at 85-87, with more in the tank. He works downhill with it and it has a heavy feel to it as it comes into the zone, occasionally got arm-side sink. The breaking ball, which came in at 74-78, can be thrown over the plate for a strike or thrown with a aggression and late bite, resulting in swing and misses. Wilder will link up with Copeland and LaFramboise this spring to lead a deep pitching staff.

Jalen Fulwood OF / RHP / Wesleyan, GA / 2021

Possibly one of the most projectable prospects in the state's 2021 class, OF Jalen Fulwood possesses game-changing speed and elite athleticism. Long-limbed at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds with some lean strength throughout, Fulwood looks the part of a premium defender in centerfield where he gracefully moves from gap-to-gap with supereme confidence in his hands. High-waisted with much more strength on the way, Fulwood projects as top of the order bat. In our look at LakePoint this summer, he hit leadoff for the Georgia Bombers and was excellent throughout the entire tournament. Fulwood utilizes a short, simple stroke to spray line drives to all fields, and drives the ball to the opposite field. As his frame continues to fill out, Fulwood could make a jump at the plate, and given his current speed and defensive prowess, that might elevate him as a prospect in the long run.

James McCoy OF / RHP / Wesleyan School, GA / 2021

Committed to Kentucky, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound switch-hitting outfielder and first baseman has a long, projetable frame with plenty of athleticism and projectable strength. An offensive force from both sides, McCoy takes a wide stance, creating an intimidating look. McCoy's swing operates short and quick to the zone with some incline. His ability to get his arms extended and stay tall allows for maximization of his natural strength. A gap-to-gap type hitter, McCoy will only add more power to his swing as he continues to physically fill out. 

 

Andruw Jones OF / RHP / Wesleyan, GA / 2022

The son of five-time MLB All-Star OF Andruw Jones, OF/RHP Druw Jones is one of the top prospects in the country's 2022 class. The Commodores of Vanderbilt recognized his talent and locked up his verbal commitment at an early age. A quick-twitch athlete, Jones is a projectable 6-foot-2, 175-pounds and is nowhere close to done growing or adding significant strength to his frame. A do-it-all type prospect, he really shines at the plate. He punishes baseballs with a swing that has extended time through the hitting zone, generating regular hard hit contact. Given his present ability and loose, athletic wrists, when the frame does start to fill out, Jones will be driving baseballs to all fields of the park with ease. In the outfield, he is rangy and shows clean, fluid actions with a presently strong arm. His arm translates well on to the mound with a short, clean arm action. His 11/5 breaking ball is still developing, but shows sharp swing and miss action.
