Prep Baseball Report

Season Review: Lambert

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season cancelled, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. We have sent surveys out to coaches around the state and got their input on the first weeks of the season. Over the next few weeks, we will highlight the season and standout players, team by team.

Lambert Longhorns

Record: 8-7

Head Coach Rick Howard: Our season was culminating into one I believe we could have been very competitive. We were playing up and down but the signs were pointing in a good direction. Players were beginning to buy in and experience for our young players was starting to pay off. Our schedule played a big part in us learning to grow and I believe it would have made a difference in region play. A lot of our growth began in the fall with an emphasis on our workouts. Can’t say enough about our players and their desire to work together and play for each other. Our seniors played a big part in our turning things around and I couldn’t be more proud of them and their leadership

3/5/20 - North Georgia commit. 5-foot-10, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher, strong, sturdy frame, solid build for a backstop. Crouching setup at the plate with an athletic bend in his knees, hands load back as he brings the barrel vertical, high leg lift stride, good balance throughout. Strong hands/wrists help him drive the ball and create hard contact, swing works mostly level through the zone with quickness, there is some length in his swing, overall strength and power overcomes this. Blasted a solo home run to the opposite field over the right center fence, 98 exit velocity per TrackMan.

Reid Howard, LHP, Lambert, 2020

3/5/20 - Gordon State commit. 6-foot, 190-pound left-handed hitting outfielder, strong, proportionally built frame, above-average athlete. Takes a crouching, athletic setup with a wide base, toe-tap stride, hands drop as he brings the barrel vertical. Barrel works short and quick to the zone, smooth swing, consistently found the barrel and drove the ball with force, quick hands. Showed a good feel at the plate, battled in a left-on-left matchup resulting in a hard hit line drive through the left-side of the infield. Also drove a ball into the right-center gap that would have been a triple had Hensley not lost his footing rounding second, resulting in an easy double.

Brentan Newberry, OF, Lambert, 2020

Season Stats: 2-2, 18.2 IP, 21 K, 14 BB, 9 ER, 3.37 ERA / .326 AVG, .418 OBP, 7 2B, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 7 R
2/12/20 - Uncommitted 6-foot-3 180-pounds.  Well built, lanky frame that shows athleticism in the delivery. Really smooth and effortless delivery. Comes off the back-side a little early, but still shows good follow through. Fastball was up to 85 in the first. Played at 80-83 the rest of the game. Showed a good 3-pitch mix. Went to the CH later in the game, and showed good downward action. CB was 69-71, and CH was a little firm at 76-77. There is definitely something there with the 6-3 frame. The velocity will come, he will be a good follow this spring.

Richard Ferrer Westrop, RHP, Lambert, 2021
Uncommitted - Missed shortened season due to injury
10/18/19 - 6-foot-2 205-pounds. Physical framed righty that looks intimidating when he steps on the mound. His delivery is smooth, but violent. He has a strong finish and gets good extension that gives him a powerful 2nd half of his motion. FB worked up to 88 in the 1st inning, he settled in at 85-87. Threw a heavy FB and a power SL at 75-77. The SL is a swing and miss pitch when he throws it with conviction and starts it at the bottom of the zone. He has a really strong lower-half that projects more velo to come given the frame. Another GA player that will be fun to follow at Lambert HS in a strong region.

Underclass Standouts

Parker Brosius, OF, Lambert, 2022

Season Stats: .293 AVG, .473 OBP, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 10 R, 11 BB

Nate Dvorsky, RHP, Lambert, 2022

Season Stats: 2-0, 6.0 IP, 8 K, 4 BB, 2 ER, 2.33 ERA
1/12/20 - 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting two-way prospect, proportional build, strong lower half, projectable. On the mound, arm works long with a soft stab on the back-side, accelerates out to a ¾ slot, despite the longer arm action is able to get out front on-time routinely, working middle/low in the zone. Drop and drive delivery, works on-line, long strider, lands square, finishes upright. Fastball sat 79-80, touched 81, pitch had heavy life with run and sink action. Changeup, some feel for, sinking action, drops out low in the zone, 70-72. Curveball, feel for, 11/5 shape, 67-78. Offensively, balanced setup, starts with hands back and barrel wrapped, little to no load, short stride, good balance. Barrel path is short to the zone, smooth gap-to-gap type swing, quick hands help gain extension through contact, 82 exit velocity. Defensively, similar arm action as on the mound, long with a soft stab to a ¾ slot, 80 across the diamond. Showed good body control and feel around the bag, fields with a wide base, ensuring the ball is kept in front.

Justin Haskins, 3B/RHP, Lambert, 2022
Uncommitted
Season Stats: 5 App, 6.2 IP, 8 K, 1 BB, 1 ER, 1.050 ERA, .750 WHIP / .220 AVG, .319 OBP, 1 2B, 1 3B, 5 RBI, 3 R
10/11/19 - 6-foot-1 185-pounds. Good size kid, with a well built frame for a ‘22. Could pick it well over at 3rd. Could be a corner INF guy, or OF. Showed signs of athleticism all weekend. Made a couple really good plays at 3rd to his backhand. Has a strong enough arm to still throw guys out even when fielding balls deep in the hole. Really liked the swing from the left side. Found barrells all weekend. His strength in his swing gives him the ability to have a short stride, and quick hands and still hit the ball with power. Does a great job hitting the ball the other way. Love to see a lefty that can work the 6 hole, and hit balls hard to left center. Plays for a great high school program, so I am excited to see what's in store for Haskins for the high school season.
