Prep Baseball Report

Season Review: Strong Rock Christian

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season cancelled, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. We have sent surveys out to coaches around the state and got their input on the first weeks of the season. Over the next few weeks, we will highlight the season and standout players, team by team.

6/6/19 - 6-foot-3, 200-pound, right-handed pitcher, physical frame, broad shoulders. Arm action is short with a low draw on the back-side coming to a ¾ slot. Easy effort throughout delivery. Showed feel for a four pitch arsenal. Fastall sat 83-84 with run. Changeup featured fade at 73. Offered up two breaking balls, a tight slider at 70-71 and a slower 11/5 curveball at 63.

2021 Standouts

Hunner Lawrence, C, Strong Rock Christian, 2021
Uncommitted - 2019 Future Games Participant
Coach’s Notes: .342avg, 3 doubles & 2 triples. Defensively he is our catcher and has a 1.91 home to 2nd throw down time. Threw out 70+% of base runners.  He is a leader on and off the field and runs a sub 7.00 60.  Very coachable and works hard everyday to get better.  One of the first to get to the field and one of the last to leave.
11/10/19 - 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher, physically built with an athletic frame will only continue to add strength to, ran a 7.11 60 on the day, has previously been around the 6.9 mark, clean gait. Offensively, keeps it simple letting his natural strength do most of the work, balanced setup, short stride, loads hands back, good balance through contact. Barrel works mostly level through the zone, creating backspin when he is able to elevate the ball, strong hands/wrists aid in his ability to drive the ball along with an ample amount of present bat speed, profiles as a gap-to-gap type hitter, 87 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, traditional catcher’s arm action, short and over-the-top, quick arm speed, throws are true, 77 from the crouch. Sits in his stance with his lower half at a 90 degree angle, keeps his back predominantly upright, clean on his exchanges and fluid with footwork, pop times ranged 2.05-2.26.

Coach’s Notes: 1.68 ERA, 36k’s in 25 innings, 2-0 record.  Pinpoint control and he is the guy that faces the best competition.  He throws 84-87 and throws 4 different pitches for strikes.  Hardest worker on the team and is a true student of the game.  Great baseball mind!
11/10/19 - 6-foot-1, 188-pound frame right-handed pitcher, wide-shoulders, strength throughout and will only put on more as he continues to mature. Long, slow draw, turns over quickly, getting out front to a ¾ slot. Works out of the strength only, stays tall in his delivery, short strider, works on-line, lands square in a powerful position, finishes upright with some arm recoil. Fastball sat 82-84, cut to the glove-side, ran to the arm-side. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 66-67, aggressive with, depth, some sharpness, dived out of the zone when located arm-side. Changeup, mostly straight, flashed sink when low in the zone, 74-75. Struck out one batter and induced an inning ending double play in his appearance.
