Top Prospect Games: Outfielder Analysis

On Tuesday, June 2nd, PBR Georgia hosted the second annual Top Prospect Games for uncommitted rising seniors. Approximately 50 prospects from all over the state of Georgia made their way to LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA.

We finish our position player analysis from the Top Prospect Games with a look at the 10 outfielders in attendance. OF/RHP William Sosa (Brookwood, 2021) leads our list of outfielders. Sosa’s entire game revolves around his natural athleticism, running a 6.91 laser-timed 60. A right-handed hitter, he showed the ability to drive the ball consistently middle/pull with a max exit velocity of 95.42 mph and distance of 354 feet via TrackMan. Defensively he has smooth actions and above average arm strength, clocking in at 86 mph on throws.

East Tennessee State commit OF James Schlegel (Aquinas, 2021) comes in at No. 2. Schlegel is a physical athlete at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds who packs a punch at the plate, posting a 93 exit velocity off the tee. The right-handed hitter showed the swing played during batting practice as he had a max exit velocity of 96.07 and a 350 foot carry via TrackMan. Rounding out our top-3 is OF Chandler Hicks (Alcovy, 2021). Hicks is a muscularly built athlete who has the potential to be a big long ball threat with a powerful pull-side swing,

Top Outfield Prospects


William Sosa, OF/RHP, Brookwood, 2021
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting two-way prospect, proportional, athletic build, room for additional strength, ran a 6.91 laser-timed 60. Offensively, balanced setup, hands drop and load back smoothly, good rhythm, short stride, good balance through finish. Takes a middle/pull approach with pull-side power, drives the ball with smooth swing, early timing, gets to the ball out front, looks to elevate with an uphill swing path through the zone, 88 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, long arm action to a ¾ slot, throws showed some carry at 86. Showed fluid actions, plays through the ball athletically, clean footwork, able to range and get feet set properly behind the ball, clean on transfers. On the mound, arm plays long, reaching back, accelerates out to a ¾ slot. Tall and fall delivery, works on-line, lands square, finishes upright with some crossing over, easy effort throughout. Fastball, sat 83-84, touched 85, run and sink. Curveball, 11/5 shape, depth, 73-75.

James Schlegal, OF, Aquinas, 2021
East Tennessee State commit. 6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, strong, athletic build, continues to trend up in terms of strength in overall frame, ran a 6.92 laser-timed 60. Offensively, wide, balanced setup, shifts weight onto back-side upon load, leg lift stride, great balance through finish. Gap-to-gap type hitter, quick hands, barrel works uphill through the zone, looks to elevate and drive the ball with force, some aggression, 93 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, arm plays short and quick to a ¾ slot, throws showed some carry at 85 from the outfield. Plays through the ball, fields with two hands, clean on transfers, short, choppy footwork. 

Chandler Hicks, OF, Alcovy, 2021
6-foot-1, 188-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, athletic frame, muscular build, strength throughout frame especially in his upper half, ran a 7.07 laser-timed 60. Offensively, tall, balanced setup, short hand load as he transfers weight to back-side, short stride, good balance through finish. Swing works short to the zone and level through, showed ability to back spin balls as he looked to elevate and drive with force to the pull-side, 91 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, long arm action to a ¾ slot, throws showed some carry at 85 from the outfield. Stays back on the ball, fielding on glove-side and out front, clean on transfers, short, quick footwork.

Nash Bingham, OF/RHP, Christian Heritage, 2021
6-foot-2, 195-pound left-handed hitting two-way prospect, long projectable frame, plenty of room for additional strength, ran a 7.31 laser-timed 60. Offensively, open setup, short hand load back with smooth rhythm, short stride to a balanced position, finishes balanced. Line drive type hitter, works the entire field with a short, quick swing that works level through the zone with whip, showed aggressiveness and some explosion in swing, 88 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, long arm action to an over-the-top slot, kept throws on target at 83 from the outfield. Stays back on the ball, clean on transfers. On the mound, arm plays long, reaching on the back-side, accelerates to a ¾ slot. Drop and drive delivery, works-line, lands square, finish varied between square and a slight cross over. Fastball sat 83-84, touched 85, run action. Curveball, 12/6 shape, depth, 70-73. Changeup, 75-76, fade.

Dallas Deas, OF, North Cobb Christian, 2021
5-foot-7, 145-pound switch-hitting outfielder, highly athletic, lean build, ran a 6.63 laser-timed 60. Offensively, similar setup from both sides of the plate, balanced, smooth hand load, short stride, good balance through finish, controlled tempo throughout. From the right-side showed a gap-to-gap approach with a level swing path, flashed some pull-side power. From the left-side, took a more pull-approach with an uphill barrel path through the zone, showed similar power abilities, 86 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, long, loose arm to an over-the-top slot, kept throws on target with some carry, 86 from the outfield. Plays through the ball athletically with quick feet and transfers, profiles as a center fielder.   

Daniel Gonzalez, OF, Centennial, 2020
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, lean build, ran a 7.44 laser-timed 60. Offensively, open setup, hands drop on load, short stride, finishes on back side. Short barrel path through the zone, line drive type hitter, 74 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, short arm action to an over-the-top slot, 68 from the outfield. Plays through the ball some, clean on transfer and clean footwork.

Jalen Kinard, OF, North Atlanta, 2021
5-foot-11, 150-pound left-handed hitting outfielder, athletic build, lean strength throughout, ran a 7.22 laser-timed 60. Offensively, balanced setup, circular load with high hands dropping and loading back before moving forward, short stride, good balance. Line drive type hitter, short barrel path to the zone, long through, 72 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, short arm action to a ¾ slot, 77 from the outfield. Fields position athletically, competent glove hand, clean on transfer and footwork.

Elijah Lewis, OF, Houston County, 2021
5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed hitting outfielder, lean frame, athletically built, ran a 6.98 laser-timed 60, uses his agility and speed well to impact the game. Offensively, balances setup, high back elbow, short hand load, leg kick timing trigger, finishes balanced. Line drive type hitter, level barrel path through the zone, smooth actions, uses the entire field, 79 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, short, loose arm to an over-the-top slot, throws are true and accurate, 71 from the outfield. Plays through the ball athletically, attacks balls on the ground, quick, clean transfers. 

Will Siewert, OF, Villa Rica, 2021
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, athletically built, strong upper half. Offensively, tall setup, hands load back smoothly, long stride to a balanced position, great balance through finish. Easy effort level swing, stays on plane, generates line drive contact gap-to-gap, consistent approach, 85 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, long, loose arm, kept throws on target, 80 from the outfield. Fields position athletically with smooth action, plays through the ball, clean footwork and transfers, sound defender.  

Cameron Snell, OF, Eagle Landing Christian, 2021
5-foot-7, 140-pound left-handed hitting outfielder, lean, athletic build, ran a 6.93 laser-timed 60. At the plate, balanced setup, hands load back into a near arm bar, high leg kick timing trigger, good balance through finish. Takes a gap-to-gap approach, long swing, some quickness in hands, swing path varied between level and uphill, at-times met ball out and front and generated harder contact, other times let ball travel, 80 exit velocity off a tee. Defensively, short arm action, some stiffness, low ¾ slot, 70 from the outfield. Plays through the ball with short, quick steps, clean on transfers, some glove pack.
