Underclass Trials Analysis: Pitchers

Phil Kerber
PBR Georgia Scouting Director

On Nov. 9, the PBR Georgia scouting staff hosted its final underclass event of 2019, the Underclass Trials, featuring nearly 80 prospects from the 2022 and 2023 classes, as well as a handful of seventh- and eighth-graders sprinkled in, at LakePoint Sports.

Last month, we shared our rapid analysis for this event inside our Quick Hits post, and took a statistical look at the day's top performers inside our Stats Story. We began our position-by-position analysis, beginning with the day's primary catchers, followed by primary outfielders and infielders. Today, we breakdown the 9 pitcher only prospects that attended the event, listed alphabetically.

Porter Berryman LHP / 1B / Parkview , GA / 2025

5-foot-7, 140-pound left-handed pitcher, young prospect who has many years of physical growth and maturation ahead of him. Arm works long, reaching on the back-side, to a high ¾ slot. Fastball played mostly straight, flashed slight run, good angle on the pitch at-times, sat 70-71, touched 72. Curveball, 12/6 shape, gradual break, 64-65. Changeup, flashed sink and fade, 65-67.

On the mound, arm action is long with a soft stab on the back-side, ¾ slot, quick hand speed, accelerates with some effort out front. Tall and fall delivery, works on-line, lands toe-closed, finishes upright with an occasional crossing over. Fastball sat 81-84, touched 85, with running action, comes out hot, giving the impression it is harder than the velocity says. Curveball, 11/5 shape, controlled around the zone, has the makings of a swing-and-miss, or weak contact inducing, pitch, 72-74.

Ricky Patrick LHP / Greenbrier, GA / 2022

Manning West RHP / 1B / Apalachee, GA / 2022

6-foot-6, 230-pound right-handed pitcher, has the physicality often unseen for a prospect his age, strong, tree stump like legs, large upper body, will only continue to add strength and firm entire frame up, one of the top prospects in Georgia’s Class of 2022. Arm action is long and loose, clean on the back-side, accelerates with little effort to ¾ slot. Drop and drive delivery, remains tall, utilizing his height well, works on-line towards home from the third base side of the rubber, finishes with a near cross over. Fastball sat 82-84 on the day, has been up to 89 earlier in the fall, so there is plenty more in the tank for him to tap into, slight run action. Curveball, 12/6 shape, sharp action at-times, 68-70. Changeup, maintains fastball arm speed, flashed sink and heavy fade, 71-74.
