Augusta Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Prep Baseball Georgia
Staff

AUGUSTA, GA  - The Prep Baseball Georgia Staff traveled to Augusta Christian School four our first event in the area and second Preseason ID. We always look forward to going to new parts of the state to identify new talent. This event was an opportunity to see a talented group from the 2025-2028 class. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman, ran the 60 yard dash using Vald Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw using Trackman. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Saturday.

Quick Hits

Bryson Crewe, OF, 2026, Evans
The uncommitted outfielder is armed with a stout, barrel-chested 5-foot-10, 191-pound frame that pairs well with his present in-game tools and athleticism. Above-average runner with a great first step and closing speed, putting down the best 60 time of the day at 6.85 in sub-50 degree conditions. Crewe followed that with a great round of BP where he was able to use the middle of the field and gaps well, while flashing the ability to carry balls to deep RCF. Longer left-handed cut that he does a good job of syncing and getting on-time consistently while showing above-average hand and bat speed through the zone. Quality actions moving through the baseball in the outfield with arm strength that plays up from on-target accuracy. Crewe will be a major factor for Evans this upcoming spring with a spotlight on the high-floor profile that will help a program at the next level.

Connor Mitchem, C, 2028, Gatewood
The early indication of talent in Georgia’s 2028 class continues to grow. Getting our first look at Mitchem, and it’s easy to see physical projection at 6-foot-3, 205-pounds with real tools to project at the plate. Utilizing a quiet load pre-pitch, Mitchem shows an impressive ability to stay compact and snap the barrel through the zone with intent. Linear bat path finds loud line-drives frequently, and has plenty of strength to grow into as he matures that points to a significant raw power ceiling. Present arm strength and ability to bend behind the plate while backing it with quality receiving as well. Gatewood Academy is beginning to load up with high-level underclassmen and could be a good follow these next couple years.

Gavin Buehner, 1B/C, 2026, Augusta Christian
With a lean, XL 6-foot-5, 181-pound frame and impressive body control that's backed by budding tools at the plate, Buehner looks to be a big part of Augusta Christian as they look to three-peat. Good balance at the plate while staying surprisingly compact and creating good leverage through the zone. Drove balls to the pull-side gap consistently while showing ability to lift the ball as well to the backside. Good footwork and lateral actions from the frame while showing present arm strength and accuracy across the diamond.

Jad Bennefield, RHP/OF, 2026, Midland Valley (SC)
From top to bottom, there might not have been a better all-around performance than what Bennefield put together on Sunday. Standing a wiry, projectable 6-foot-2, 184-pound, the two-way player flashed exciting tools in every facet of the profile. Excellent hand speed while showing the ability to rotate and create great length in-zone. Incorporates his lower half well in an easy stride to contact paired with a well-leveraged barrel that allows Bennefield to turn on balls to pull-side with minimal effort. Free and easy actions in the outfield with a loose, near over-the-top arm slot that showed the best arm strength of the day, putting 89 on-target multiple times. On the mound, the right-hander shows that present arm strength in a clean over-the-top slot while using the frame to stride down the mound with quality extension. Fastball shows some giddy up at 85-87, getting ride out of the hand and present feel to spin (Avg. 2317 RPM). Curveball in the mid-70s has some slurvy action with some sweep and depth, and will continue to develop as he throws it with more intent. Changeup at 77-80 with late fade has a chance to miss a ton of barrels as the action disappears out of zone and plays well off both the fastball and breaker. Still uncommitted, Bennefield has a chance to really thrive as a junior and be a home run add to a 2026 recruiting class.

Peyton Grizzle, MIF, 2026, Lakeside
Uncommitted. 5-foot-5 136-pounds. Grizzle displayed a strong feel for the barrel during his round of BP. He stayed through the middle of the field with a short, simple swing. He matched plane really well and drove the ball where it was pitched. He had pop to the pull-side, and showed the ability to keep his hands inside. He had an average exit velocity of 85.2 which landed him at 3rd for the event. He had a max distance of 334ft, which landed him at the 4th for the event. Grizzle is a the ball player type that will find a way to get it done. He showed smoothed actions across the diamond with an infield velocity of 82.

Rylan Farlow, RHP/SS, 2028, Greenbrier
5-foot-10 150-pounds. From June 4th to Sunday, Farlow has put in some obvious work and has added strength and size. He improved in every category across the board. His exit velocity increased by nearly 10mph, infield velocity went up by 4 mph, and improved his 60-yard dash from 8.41 to 7.94. Farlow is just a freshman and has much more room to grow. During BP he sprayed balls back side in the gap, and stayed through the middle of the field. On the mound he was up to 81.4 with a smooth, athletic delivery. As he grows, so will the fastball velocity. He has all the makings of a name to know in the future with an older brother committed to Western Carolina.

Jayden Stone, RHP, 2026, Augusta Christian
Uncommitted. 6-foot-3 176-pounds. Stone is an arm that we have been able to see in the past. It is hard not to like the lean, athletic frame, especially once he gets up on the mound. He was up to 87 over the summer and is slowly getting ramped up for the spring season. He moves down the mound really well. He gets great extension with the long lower. There is slight disconnect in the upper and lower half at foot plant, but he does a good job of getting the chest back over the front knee. He worked the fastball at 83-85 on Sunday. The change up had really good life at 80-82. The curveball flashed some really good shape, especially this early in the year. Stone will be an arm to keep an eye on this year and could easily be a low 90’s arm in the future.

Landon Sheffield, RHP, 2026, Dodge County
Uncommitted. 5-foot-10 201-pounds. Sheffield showcased the top fastball of the day at 87.5. He has a strong, compact frame that stays well connected throughout the entire delivery. The fastball has good spin at 2,200 RPM with late ride in the zone that will sneak up on hitters. He had a strong change up and slider to pair with it. The change up had late, downward action at 80-81 that will fool hitters coming out of the same slot. The slider had sharp, late break in the upper 70's. Sheffield has really developed the lower half since the summer and wouldn't be suprised if he creeped into the low 90's come April or May.
