Fall Upperclass Games Preview: Early Look at Catchers to Watch

Blake Davis
State Director

Here is an early look at four catchers to remember for the upcoming Fall Upperclass Games on November 10th at Piedmont College.

Tyler Kennedy, C/OF, Southland Academy (GA), 2020

Uncommitted. 6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher and outfielder, proportional, athletic build. Offensively, balanced setup, starts up in the box, long stride, hands load back smoothly, good balance. Gap-to-gap type hitter, barrel works slightly uphill through the zone, uses strength in upper body well to drive the ball. Defensively, arm works well from the outfield, held runners from taking extra bases.

Christian King, C, Habersham Central HS (GA), 2020

King had a good weekend at the plate. Athletic stance that stays within his legs. Short, quiet load. Fast hands that showed the ability to turn on FB. Legs and hands work in-sync at the plate. Solid uncommitted player to watch in 2020 class.

Hunner Lawrence, C/OF, Strong Rock Christian (GA), 2021

Lawrence has a good catchers frame at 6-foot, 190-pounds and is a sneaky athletic kid with good strength. He flashes power to all fields, almost driving a ball out the opposite way in Team Georgia’s game vs Team Carolina's. His exit velocity registered as high as 93 mph at the Future Games. Defensively Lawrence more than held his own with a pop time of 1.93 to 2.08. The scouts got a good look at what Lawrence has offer at the next level both at the plate and behind it. Lawrence definitely has good ability that will play well at the next level. Hunner was selected from a talented group that attended the PBR Georgia Underclass Games.

Dominic Rutigliano, C, Campbell HS (GA), 2020

Rutigliano comes in at 5-foot-9, 185-pounds with a sturdy, stocky strong build. The 2020 catching prospect has a polished game. And sets up at the plate with a slightly open and uses a balanced and repeatable leg kick to load. His hands are shoulder level with a cocked back elbow and uses and rhythmic, repeatable load and ends up in sound hitting position and on time repeatedly. He has gap type power out of this polished approach with an 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively Rutigliano is a sound receiver of the baseball and produces accurate throws and respectable and consistent pop times at 2.19-2.22. Well coached backstop that has feel to play.
