Georgia Class of 2027 Rankings: Post Fall Update

Prep Baseball Georgia
Staff

The fall season has come to an end. We take a brief pause, as we head into the offseason for the players in the state of Georgia.  We had an action packed fall season, and were able find new players, and check in on the names we already know. These players will head into their junior year at their respective high schools. The 2027 class is ready to make an impact in their sophomore season. We have an action packed preseason planned, so be sure to find a Preseason ID to get on the radar before the high school season.

As always, the evaluation process is a fluid and ongoing process with multiple viewings in order to get the best feel for players abilities. It’s important to note that as players continue their development some show marked improvement at a much more rapid pace. That doesn’t indicate that other players got worse or went backwards, it’s just how player development works. As the year unfolds, players make improvements and new prospects pop up on the radar expanding the PBR rankings universe. In addition to the evaluations of players, our scouts, both those in Georgia and nationally, have also had multiple discussions with each other to review our individual lists and then make adjustments based on what we've each seen.

Biggest Movers

Bryce Fontenot, RHP/UTL, Cherokee Bluff
One of the big winners from USA Scout Day after a strong fall, Fontenot is quickly looking like a true two-way prospect. With a physical 6-foot-0, 209-pound frame, the sophomore shows loose hands at the plate with good separation and length through the zone. Stays up the middle well with a linear bat path and present impact in the barrel that finds consistent hard-hit contact. Impressive arm strength from both the outfield and left-side of the dirt where he’s high-80s across the infield with present accuracy from multiple slots showing the true arm talent. Operating from a low three-quarters slot with equally low release on the mound, Fontenot deploys a strong three-pitch mix. FB jumps out of the hand from a compact arm action at 85-87 with ride and some feel to spin (2300+). Command to land to either side of the plate when elevated and rarely leaves middle-middle. Slider is a budding out-away pitch in the mid-70s with sharp sweep and innate feel for spin. Changeup tunnels well at 77-79 and will get more effective as the velo continues to tick up. Fontenot will be vital this spring as a younger Cherokee Bluff squad looks to make another state title series run.

Dylan Honore, MIF, Hillgrove
5-foot-11 160-pounds. Honore makes the jump from 76 to 45 , and has really made some big strides over the last year. The added strength at the plate has turned his singles into doubles in the gap, and that opens up his ability to change the game with his speed. He has instincts on the bases that can’t be taught, and has a strong 1st step out of the box that puts pressure on the infielders. In the field the actions are smooth and athletic, and the arm continues to get stronger. He will be a key piece for Hillgrove coming up in 2025.

Travis Wallace, SS/RHP, Denmark
First look at Wallace this summer and fall for our staff, and it is easy to see the projection in the tools and frame. Standing plenty physical at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, Wallace flashes obvious hand and bat speed at the plate in a vertical path that creates leverage with ease. Uses his lower half well with ability to get the barrel out front consistently. Defensively, the actions in the dirt are smooth with quality footwork and some lateral range that’s backed by present arm strength. Denmark has a chance with the 2026 and 2027 classes to do something special, and Wallace looks to be in the middle of it.

Jake Spurlin, MIF, Tift County
Spurlin has been on the positive track throughout 2024 and finishes the fall in the Top 75 in the class after a 63 spot rankings jump. Athletic, well-proportioned 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame with present strength and flexibility throughout. The middle infielder does an excellent job of matching plane throughout the zone with some whip in the barrel. Sprays balls into both gaps well and will grow into solid raw power as the frame continues to get stronger. Defensive actions and arm strength to profile at either position in the middle infield with projectability to stick long term as well. Tift County will be looking for quality production from Spurlin this spring and the sophomore looks ready for the opportunity.

Asher Stephens, SS/OF, Gainesville
5-foot-10 175-pounds. Stephens jumps into the rankings for the 1st time at 114. We first saw him playing short stop as a freshman at Gainesville last spring. Fast forward to this fall, and he made an impact with his game changing speed at the plate. He has added some considerable strength/size since we last saw him. The swing is simple and consistent, and will be a key piece for new head coach, Chan Brown this spring.

Landon Rawlins, RHP, Cherokee Bluff
6-foot-3 185-pounds. Rawlins has been on the steady climb over the last few years, and with added strength/size he has a chance to have a breakout season at Cherokee Bluff. They are losing some players on the mound, and Rawlins is going to need to step up to help a strong returning line up. The command of the strike zone and feel for spin has always been there, but now he is starting to creep into the mid-upper 80’s and will really take his success to the next level.

The Arm Barn

With the 2027 class really beginning to take shape throughout the spring season and summer circuit, it quickly became evident that the strength of the class could be the premier arm talent and how deep it runs.

It starts at the top with the #2 player in the class, SS/RHP Harry Jones Jr. who’s been comfortable in the low-90s all summer, while running it up to 94-95 at times and two budding above-average secondaries in the slider and splitter. RHP Andrew Brech has been a breakout in the class throughout the year with his high-spin FB/SL combo and premier arm speed that has shined on some big stages while pushing him into the top 5 of the class as well.

Advanced pitchability leads the way with a pair of long-time top 10 members in LHP Amaree Griffin and RHP Matthew Westbrook, who have a chance to be in SP1 roles for both of their squads this spring. RHP Jack Johnson has quickly pushed himself into the top 10 and still feels like there’s much more breakout coming. Already into the low-90s from a low slot and changeup that flashes above-average regularly with tunneling and late tumble.

RHPs Max Rogozinski, Isaiah Galason, Mason Peek, Lee Holt, and Caleb Hudson all hold big-time athleticism and projection in the frames and deliveries while each already touching 90+ with even more in the tank. The next wave offers immense projection led by spin-king RHPs Ryan Trout and Bryce Fontenot with names like RHP Andres Jimenez, Gavin McElroy, Dylan Walls and Landon Rawlins not far behind and presents another five plus names who could see the 90-club this spring.

The southpaw contingent is well-represented at the top with Griffin, but Jack Pierce is rising up boards quickly after standing out for our staff as much as anyone this fall. Lean, projectable 6-foot-4 frame with low-slot, arm-side run FB that misses bats at will. Hudson Chadwick will be healthy as well and looking for a front-of-the-rotation spot for Calhoun in the spring.

We have mentioned nearly 20 names today without highlighting one of the top two-way players in the class and top 5 overall, SS/RHP Hayes Maginnis who looks to improve on an outstanding 1.32 ERA freshman campaign. I say that to point out the overall depth of the pitching talent in this class. I could have easily highlighted 40+ arms today, and overall pitching will be a focal point for our entire staff this spring as Future Games 2025 looms just a few months away.

On the Gridiron

As we approach the football state championships in the great state of Georgia we thought we would take a moment to highlight some of 2027 multi sport athletes that are making just as much of an impact on the gridiron as they are on the baseball diamond. We have seen tons of football/baseball stars come through the state. College coaches are always on the hunt for their next big recruit. Many coaches hold high value for multi-sport athletes. They can be versatile on the diamond and often have that competitive edge that can’t be taught.

Many of these players juggle fall baseball games, baseball workouts, plus a rigorous football schedule with weekly practices leading to Friday night lights. There is something to be said for players that can juggle all those things and still be a strong student in the classroom and take care of their bodies. Below we are going to touch on some players making an impact on the football field this fall. We know there are many many more multi sport athletes across the state, these are just a few notable.
