Hawaii 2027 Class Rankings: Update

Dan Cox
Scouting Director, Hawaii/Pacific Rim

The 2027 Hawaii class is the second class to be impacted by the new NCAA DI rules from spring of 2023. Players and families had an opportunity to commit to a DI before the new rules took effect or wait twenty-seven months to be eligible to do so.

At that time, the 2027 class were eighth graders. Needless to say, making a decision to commit to a DI at such as early age was not for most players and families, but four families from the 808 found a home committing to their home-state Rainbow Warriors baseball program in 'Ale Kuhaulua, Chase Thompson, Pono Kong and Spencer Tavares.

Two years later, that group of 2027's started their second year of high school. And, in those two years of natural maturity, hard work and strength gains, a small group of 2027's have developed into not only future DI commits but potential 2027 MLB drafts.

Prep Baseball Hawaii is excited to spotlight ten players who seperated themselves as the Top 10 Players in the 2027 Hawaii Class along with our 2027 Top 35 Hawaii Overall State Rankings.

Ka'alekahi Kuhaulua OF / LHP / Kailua, HI / 2027

6-01/166. Kuhaulua makes the game look easy, on both sides of the ball. Prep Baseball Hawaii’s #1 ranked 2027 and University of Hawaii commit is a premium two-way DI recruit who is already one of the top two-way players in all Hawaii, at 15 years old. Baseball bloodlines blessed Kuhaulua with long limbs, a high waist and huge body projection as he could end up bigger and stronger than most would project. The L/L two-way freshman projects offensively with plus hit/plus hit-for-power RF and has been to 89 mph on bump with advanced pitchability. ‘Ale comes from a long line of Kuhaulua’s who were drafted, went on to play professionally and the jury is out which way he’ll end up better. As much as Prep Baseball Hawaii loves him on the bump, his bat is his ticket to get drafted and develop into a Big Leaguer. 24 MLB scouts saw him at Hawaii Fall Showcase and all have him locked-in as a potential 2027 MLB draft.

Chase Thompson OF / 1B / 'Iolani, HI / 2027

Prep Baseball Hawaii’s #2 ranked 2027 added muscle and already surpassed most 2025’s physically. The University of Hawaii commit had arguably the best two rounds of BP at Hawaii Fall Showcase hitting ‘um as far as 18-year-olds making a crowd of 24 MLB scouts scramble for their roster to make sure they know his name. One of the more advanced bats in Hawaii at 15 years old, Thompson projects as a power-hitting plus-impact offensively corner guy. Arm has improved to a point where he could end up a value in RF and 1B where he makes it look easy now. Makeup is off-the-scale and the 2027 premium bat LHH RF/1B is on track to develop into one of the high school best bats to come out of Hawaii in years.

Logen Doran RHP / OF / Waiakea High School, HI / 2027

6-04/160, 16 years old with size on both parents sides = plus-plus body upside. Up to 84 last spring, worked his butt off all spring & summer with Big Island Wood Bat Academy and surprised everyone, including him and his family, as he bumped 91 for the first time as the lone 2027 on Team Select's Future Games. Not far-fetched to project Doran to steadily increase FB velo each year to where he's a RHP MLB scouts see as a priority follow going into his senior year. As exciting it is for Doran as a pitcher, he's very intriguing as a RHH RF'er with some of the top offensive metrics out of Prep Baseball Hawaii events including exit velo, distance and #1 amongst all 2027's in the 60 yard dash. Going to be a lot of fun watching Doran develop as sky is the limit for the Waiakea/BIWBA product. Doran is Prep Baseball Hawaii's #1 uncommitted 2027, premium 2027 DI recruit, August 1 phone call guy and strong MLB follow.

Kekahupono Kong RHP / C / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus, HI / 2027

6-00/155, lean, athletic look. 2027 RHP/C who could end up +defensive C but much greater value as hard-throwing RHS with +stuff. RHP: Arm is best tool, quick/loose/live arm, up to 88 (2300+ spin), not far fetched to project up to 93-95 senior year as still 15 yrs old. High-spin CB up to 2520 with feel, late bite/finish when hits and may not be best secondary as possesses very advanced CHG for age, excellent arm spd & deception with +fading action, both pitches on path to end up plus & premium K-out pitches. Presence of a seasoned pro, exudes confidence, very aggressive, mentality/approach is not trying to trick you, but to out-stuff you. C: 1.93 pop-time s eye-opening. Got some bat speed & more pop that looks at 155 lbs. Hit doesn't come as easy as pitching but would not bet against the athlete and makeup when it comes to the bat. Prep Baseball Hawaii's #2 uncommitted 2027, #4 ranked 2027 overall, premium DI recruit, August 1 phone call guy and future MLB scout follow and potential 2027 MLB draft.

Max Hinahara 3B / RHP / Punahou School, HI / 2027

6-00/160, long/lean with +projection. One of the top players at 2024 Oahu Preseason ID and also may have been the youngest. Impressive BP, loud with easy barrels, 7th best Blast Bat Speed (73.5), 5th best Trackman Exit Velo (96.8) & 3rd best Distance (374) at 14 yrs old, drove balls deep to all fields as far as the big boys, has present hitting traits for +hit & +power. 84 INF velo with quick/loose arm, good arm action, future +arm. Plus actions in field, chance to stay at SS but projects as 3B, would like to try behind plate as well, might really surprise there as arm one of this strongest tools. Young 2027 with plus-plus body/age projection. Prep Baseball Hawaii's #5 ranked 2027, strong DI recruit and future MLB scout follow.

Tyson Uyehara SS / RHP / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus, HI / 2027

Lots to like from this athletic LHH SS/MIF who can do a little bit of everything. One of the obvious stand-outs at BIWBA's 2025 Memorial Day Tournament: Powered by Prep Baseball Hawaii, where Uyehara established himself as one of the most advanced 2027's on both sides of the ball. Love the actions at SS, made a highlight play and took some of the better AB's all tournament with some big/clutch hits when his team needed it. Uyehara is one player who Prep Baseball Hawaii feels is on track to be not just a strong DI commit but one of the better players in the 2027 Hawaii class.

Tycen Baruela C / SS / Waiakea, HI / 2027

Baruela is Prep Baseball Hawaii's top 2027 catcher hailing from the Big Island via Waiakea High School and BIWBA. Baruela stands out on both sides of the ball with his bat arguably ahead of his defense. Baruela possesses advanced strength, bat speed and feel for hitting at such a young age and put on a show in wood BP in multiple Prep Baseball Hawaii events. Easy to project a ceiling of plus bat metrics as a potential middle-of-the-order hit/hit-for-power run producer. Defensively Baruela has quick feet, exchange and release with an accurate arm. Many DI's already know who Baruela is and may be able to see him up close and personal at 2025 Future Games. Strong DI recruit and potential August 1 phone call guy.

Jack Geier 1B / 2B / Punahou, HI / 2027

First look at Jack Geier late October at Prep Baseball Hawaii's Fall Open ID where Geier was a clear metric standout, both ways. Love the aggressive hacks with EV up to 94.5 and hit 'um far/long. 85 infield velo and would love to see him behind the plate. Lots to like offensively but when Geier got on the mound, everybody had to double-take as he ripped-off some breaking balls with spin rate up to 3049. Hard/late bite to SL and showed feel and ability to throw for strikes. Prep Baseball Hawaii is looking forward to seeing Geier more and DI's may be able to see him this July in Georgia at Prep Baseball's 2025 Future Games.

Jonah Parker 1B / Mililani, HI / 2027

6-01/203 Jonah Parker was by far the most aggressive freshman hitter Prep Baseball Hawaii saw in the 808 in 2024. Stepped in the box and was ready to take a hack. Bat over defense guy who profiles as a middle-of-the-order LHH power-hitting 1B who's already showing feel for hitting and present plus power for age. Don't be surprised if Jonah Parker climbs up this Top 10 Rankings as big left-handed bats are hard to find. This summer/fall will be huge for Parker getting in front of DI's and may be on display at Prep Baseball's 2025 Future Games.

Spencer Tavares C / RHP / Saint Louis, HI / 2027

6-00/170 and could easily end up the most physical catcher in the 2027 Hawaii class. Tavares possesses advanced natural strength for a 15 year old with an present defensive and offensive skillset that project as plus defense and plus raw power. Love the arm action, throws easy and on-target. Defense comes easier for Tavares but his bat has really improved in the last year and offensively Tavares could develop into a plus value guy not just defensively, but offensively as well. The University of Hawaii commit is one who could make a big jump in 2025.
