PBR:  Why did you choose Grand View?
SMITH: Developed a good relationship with the pitching coach, I feel that I can develop at Grand View and become a much better pitcher. I also picked a college that I would be happy at even if I wasn’t playing baseball there.

PBR:  What other schools were you considering?
SMITH: Northwestern, Graceland, Iowa Lakes CC and Ellsworth CC.

PBR:  Where did they first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?
SMITH: The Iowa Junior Showcase and then a private workout on campus. Then developed a relationship with the coaching staff, especially the pitching coach during the visit and stayed in touch up until I committed.

PBR: What role do you expect to play your first year on campus?
SMITH: I want to compete for a spot in the rotation, but willing to do whatever helps the team win games.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
SMITH: Brian DeLunas at P3 in St. Louis helped me with my mechanics and velocity. My dad has also taught me a great deal about the game and was my coach for five years.

PBR: What have you worked on/improved since last year?
SMITH: I worked on getting bigger and stronger to increase my velocity. At the beginning of my junior year I went through a major change in my mechanics and that has taken quite a while to get and now is starting to feel natural and command improving with the change.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have played against or with?
SMITH: I played with Iowa pitcher Ben Probst last year. He has a great work ethic, he is a leader and very competitive.

PBR:  What are your thoughts on the recruiting process? Any advice for other players who have the desire to play college baseball.
SMITH: Start early, attend camps and showcases and keep all options open.
