IA Preseason All-State: Catching Evaluations

Prep Baseball Report's IA Preseason All-State event took place on Sunday, March 5, 2017. The event was held at SportsPlex West in Waukee, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2018 and 2019 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from select 2020 and one 2021 participant. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and college coaches in attendance.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Preseason All-State. The event this year was live streamed in it's entirety with the use of Twitter and Periscope. You can catch all the action from the IA Preseason All-State- CLICK HERE.

As we drill down into the statistics:

  +  16 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+  13 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times

Today we take a look at the catchers that were in attendance at event. Evaluations are listed below in alphabetical order. Once all evaluations are released; PBR Iowa will release it's Top Prospects from the event.

Catcher Evaluations (alphabetical)

Tony Barreca, C/OF, North Scott, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #13 ranked player in Iowa 2018 class. Consistent line drive and hard groundball contact, works middle of field, improved load with cleaner path to baseball, 91 mph exit velocity. Flexible and athletic behind plate, short repeatable levers, shows ability to receive, good sway to both sides of plate, consistently on bag with throws, 1.91-1.96 pop times with 76 mph arm strength.

Carter Baumler, RHP/C, Dowling Catholic, 2020
6-foot-1, 178-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.06 runner. Advanced athletic tools and frame for age. Slight crouch in set-up, clean bat path with lift, shows pop to mid/pull side of field, stands up through contact occasionally causing spin tendencies, 91 mph exit velocity. Quick release with clean arm path, above avg. carry on throws, avg. accuracy, solid receiver, tendency to stab at pitches, fundamental blocker. 77 mph arm strength with 2.00-2.4 pop times.

Nick Bordenaro, C, Dowling Catholic, 2018
5-foot-10, 177-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.31 runner. Square stance, strides slightly open, hitchy rhythm, line drive contact, works mid/away, 81 mph exit velocity. Off-set stance, extra movements receiving, good direction through plate, avg. feet and momentum on throws, 2.34-2.37 pop times with 67 mph arm strength.

Noah Bruckner, C, Atlantic, 2018
5-foot-7, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.69 runner. Crouched stance, mid/away approach, consistent solid contact, line drive and groundballs, 77 mph exit velocity. Solid framing, shows direction with feet, length to exchange, solid accuracy to bag, 2.16-2.3 pop times with 72 mph arm strength.

Noah Cook, C, Urbandale, 2018
5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.69 runner. Square stance, body load, above avg. bat speed, occasional mis-hit during BP, strength to pull gap, 90 mph exit velocity. Clean short exchange, accurate to bag, 2.08-2.22 pop times with 78 mph arm strength. Handled velo well. Strong hands receiving, average flexibility, above above blocker with good lateral coverage, deadens ball well on plate.

Jaden Driskell, C, Creston, 2018
6-foot-3, 230-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Tall square stance, simple clean path, line drive contact, works middle of field well, avg. power in bat, 84 mph exit velocity. Open off-set stance, solid receiver on pitches around zone, avg. mobility and flexibility, long arm action, length to exchange, avg. accuracy to bag, 2.12-2.33 pop times with 74 mph arm strength. 8.51 runner.

Christopher Fowles, C, Ames, 2018
6-foot, 205-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 8.16 runner. Square stance, strides slightly closed, simple swing, strong, uses field, consistent solid contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Soft blocker, strong hands, some extra movements receiving, 2.03-2.18 pop times with 73 mph arm strength.

Jayden Gibson, C/RHP, Grinnell
6-foot, 178-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.59 runner. Simple load and stride, quiet head, produced consistent solid contact, gap to gap approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Some extra movements while receiving, early forward movement on catch and throw, works around plate, lower arm slot, quick release on throws, 78 mph arm strength with 1.93-2.03 pop times.

Jacob Goyke, C/RHP, Waukee, 2019
5-foot-8, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.51 runner. Open stance, tall to fall, stays connected well, short to contact, flashes pop in bat with mid/pull approach, 91 mph exit velocity. Square stance, avg. receiver and blocker, solid accuracy to bag, 2.02-2.19 pop tmes with 71 mph arm strength.

Trent Hoogerwerf, C, Iowa City Regina, 2018
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.47 runner. Physical build. Athletic setup in box, slight crouch in legs, stays connected, clean path through contact, shows pop in bat to pull side of field, consistent solid contact, 87 mph exit velocity. Good direction with feet, clean exchanges, has carry and accuracy to bag, 2.04-2.16 pop times with 77 mph arm strength. Flexible lower half, blocking ability, some extra body movements receiving, has strong hands, overall fundamentally sound.

Ian Moller, C, Dubuque Senior, 2021
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. High level prospect in the 2021 class. Extremely advanced for age. Lean athletic build with longer legs; will easily add 20 lbs. to frame through high school. Well above average body control, moves with fluidity, and has natural actions. Clean bat path with present bat speed, line drive approach, shows ability to lift and drive baseballs, mid/pull approach, centers baseball well, 89 mph exit velocity. 78 mph arm strength behind plate with 1.9-1.98 pop times. Slight hitch in release but every throw was knee high and on the bag. Was an above avg. blocker and receiver; handling mid-upper 80’s arms during event.

Tyler Oberbroeckling, C, Linn-Mar, 2019
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.22 runner. Athletic set-up with rhythm, stays connected, short to contact, shows ability to drive both gaps, mid/pull approach with solid pop in bat, 85 mph exit velocity. Flexible lower half, quick feet and exchange, quiet movements behind plate, sticks pitches occasionally, 2.00-2.4 pop time with 76 mph arm strength.

Mitch Randall, RHP/C, Waukee
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.38 runner. Double tap trigger, short to contact, occasional early barrel exit from zone, flashes pop in bat to mid/oppo side of field, 85 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete behind dish, some raw aspects, shows ability to block and receive, 2.19-2.35 pop times with 76 mph arm strength.

Jaden Rolffs, C/RHP, Pella, 2018
6-foot-2, 210-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #18 ranked player in IA 2018 class. Athletic physical build. 7.41 runner. Body load with easy leg kick trigger, loud pull side contact, evident present strength with power potential, deeper load and long to contact occasionally, 90 mph exit velocity. Higher setup, clean exchange, good direction and footwork, works through the plate with momentum, 1.98-2.09 pop times with well above avg. arm strength producing 81 mph throws to second with carry and accuracy.

Hunter Simpson, C, Dowling Catholic, 2019
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.55 runner. Square crouched stance, front heel turn trigger, rotational lower half, consistent solid pull contact, tends to hook baseball, 84 mph exit velocity. Square set-up behind plate, presents target well, handles low pitch and off-speed well, avg. lateral movement. Works through plate, quicker release, length to exchange, solid accuracy to bag, 2.06-2.2 pop times with 76 mph arm strength.

Casey Sole, C, Cedar Falls, 2019
6-foot-1, 180-pound left-handed hitting catcher. 7.63 runner. Easy rhythm in swing, shows strength and pop in bat, mid/pull approach, lift in swing plane, projects to hit, 83 mph exit velocity. Low square setup, strong receiver, quiet athletic movements with sway to both sides of plate. Solid thrower, accurate to bag, some length to footwork and exchanges, 2.07-2.18 pop times with 78 mph arm strength.

Logan Trumbull, C, Iowa City West, 2018
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 8.06 runner. Slight crouch, leg kick trigger, avg. balance, gap to gap hitter, spray contact, with flashes of pop in bat, 79 mph exit velocity. Square stance, has strength in hands, avg. lateral movement, flashes ability to receive but can be inconsistent, 2.23-2.47 pop time with 69 mph arm strength.

Jayson Willers, C/RHP, Davenport Assumption, 2019
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Leg kick trigger, high back elbow, stays inside ball, works middle away, 87 mph exit velocity. Quiet movements behind plate, shows ability to block, handles off-speed well, solid all-around receiver. Pivot footwork, length to exchange, average accuracy to bag, 1.98-2.2 pop times with 72 mph arm strength. 8.26 runner.
