The Prep Baseball Report MN Preseason All-State event took place on Sunday, March 18, 2018. The event was held at the Vadnais Sports Center in Vadnais Heights, MN. The event featured prospects from the 2019 grad class; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the MN Preseason All-State.

As we drill down into the statistics:

+  29 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+  29 players recorded 85+ mph exit velocities
+  23 players recorded 80+ mph infield throws
+  21 players recorded 80+ mph outfield throws
+  19 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+  16 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+  42 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

pitchER EVALUATIONS

William Anderson, LHP, St. Michael-Albertville, 2019
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. Effective and efficient in getting the most out of himself. The ball jumps through the zone with some late life. Quick hand and arm, and pounded the zone with all three pitches. Fastball was heavy to the bottom of the zone the whole bullpen at 85-86 mph; touching 88 mph. Power changeup was thrown with intent like a fastball and featured the same spin and arm side life at 77-79. Slider was sharp across the plate at 74-76. It is a swing and miss pitch at the next level with tight spin and late break. 

Jonathan Baker, RHP/SS, Cloquet, 2019
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Worked 87-88 mph with a compact delivery and short arm action. Shorter, narrow shouldered frame. Changeup was a solid pitch at 76-77 mph. Breaking ball flashed late heavy break with 11/5 shape. Secondary pitches are still developing but there is arm strength and he has a polished delivery and should continue to develop. 7.28 runner. Square stance, balanced stride, shoulder turn to load, clean path, spray contact, gap to gap approach, flashes hard line drive contact to middle of field, 84 mph exit velocity. Agile in field, works down to up, sure hands with soft glove, solid overall actions, carry and accuracy to bag, 81 mph arm across infield. 

Brenden Baxter, SS/RHP, Rochester John Marshall, 2019
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.41 runner. Tall stance, leg kick trigger, preset hands, gap to gap approach, spray hitter that barrels baseball consistently, 72 mph exit velocity. Clean arm action, accurate to bag, avg. footwork, tends to move with feet close together, sure hands, works through ball, 81 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled delivery, medium balance point, long arm action from OT slot, heavy head whack with effort on release. Fastball showed arm-side run at 75-77 mph. Loose spin and avg. depth on 11/5 breaking ball. Above avg. changeup with late fading action in bottom of zone.

Duke Benge, 2B/RHP, Lakeville South, 2019
5-foot-10, 170-pound switch hitting 2-way player. 7.38 runner. RHH- square stance with knee to knee trigger, clean actions, some length to contact, line drive swing plane, barrels ball consistently, mid/pull approach. LHH- same setup, choppy rhythm, stiffer swing plane, slight lift through contact, spray contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid feet with sure hands, works through ball, makes routine plays with solid actions, accurate arm to bag, 75 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled delivery, load over rubber, varying timing working down mound, short compact arm action, lands inline to plate with solid extension. Fastball was 77-78 mph with occasional arm-side run. Tighter rotation on breaking ball with slider shape. Flat action on changeup with avg. fade.

Ian Bergstrom, LHP, Rochester John Marshall, 2019
6-foot-4, 240-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. Large durable frame. Overhead delivery into medium balance point, stab down in arm action, high ¾ arm slot, delivers with moderate effort to plate. Fastball was 79-81 mph, straight, with occasional slight running action. Slower velo with large shape on breaking ball for strikes. Flashes running action on changeup to arm-side of plate.

Brenden Bethke, SS/RHP, Sacred Heart, 2019
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #41 ranked player in MN 2019 class. 6.89 runner. Long thin athletic frame, square stance with body load, preset hands with slight rhythm, clean path, looks to elevate baseball, gap to gap approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Easy actions in field, athletic, follows throws to bag with carry and accuracy, fields deep into body occasionally, 83 mph arm across infield. On mound; short rocker step into higher tuck and turn, hides ball from hitter with longer arm swing behind body, clean compact arm action with extension out front. Sneaky fastball jumps on hitter at 82-84 mph with consistent strikes. Solid 11/5 shape on breaking ball with avg. depth. Creates cutting action on changeup with avg. fade. Strong follow in 2019 class with additional maturity and strength gains.

Hunter Bleess, RHP/SS, Blue Earth, 2019
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short balance point, lands hard to third base side and throws across body, one piece casting arm action, with finish to plate. Fastball was 77-79 mph with straight action to plate. Early break and loose spin on 11/5 curveball. Sinking action and straight changeup. 7.2 runner. Square crouched stance, wider base, solid balance, stiffer swing plane, solid present strength, spray contact, 82 mph exit velocity. Plays through baseball, stiff glove, needs improvement with footwork, long release on throws with accuracy to bag, 72 mph arm across infield.

Ethan Bosacker, RHP/3B, Monticello, 2019
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Currently #57 and will move up in MN 2019 rankings. Physical frame and durable. Whippy arm action and ball jumps through zone. Worked 87-88 mph with arm side run. Power changeup at 79 mph that showed fade and sink. Shorter 11/5 breaking ball that has a chance to be an above avg. pitch. 7.4 runner. Wider base, body load, choppy rhythm in hands, linear stride and uses lower half well in swing, spray contact, gap to gap approach, solid barrel contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Active feet, works through ball, sure hands with soft glove, funnels underneath occasionally, accurate throws to bag, 86 mph arm across infield.

Hayden Brown, 1B/LHP, Rochester Lourdes, 2019
6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. #61 ranked player in MN 2019 class. 7.34 runner. Square stance, knee to knee trigger, line drive swing plane, some stiffness in lower half with straight legs, flashes pop in bat to pull gap of field, 79 mph exit velocity. Tall fielding position, sure hands, makes routine plays, solid around bag, 79 mph arm across infield. On mound; large durable frame that should add considerable size and strength, controlled delivery, short arm action, lands inline to catcher, and tends to fall down mound. Fastball was 79-81 mph with flashes of arm-side run. Loose spin on 1/7 breaking ball for strikes. Running action with above avg. fade on changeup. 

Brock Brumley, RHP/SS, Minnehaha Academy, 2019
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; slower tempo windup, crouched at balance point, lands far across body, easier arm action, with solid extension out front. Fastball was 77-78 mph with running action on fastball. Slurvy shape on breaking ball with avg. spin and depth. Above avg. changeup, thrown at fastball arm speed, with fade and late sink. 7.94 runner. Tall stance with shoulder turn load, linear stride, easy effort, some length to contact, pull approach, consistent solid contact, line drives and flyballs of bat, 71 mph exit velocity. Long frame, plays through, makes routine, stiffer glove with tall fielding position, accurate arm to bag, 76 mph arm across infield. 

Ty Christensen, LHP/1B, Glencoe-Silver Lake, 2019
5-foot-11, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step, swing up into balance point, longer sideways arm path, lands inline to catcher, low ¾ arm slot and upright on release. Fastball was 73-75 mph delivered on a flat plane to plate. Breaking ball tends to back up on hitter and drops arm slot. Avg. feel and action on changeup. 7.84 runner. Closed stance, front heel turn trigger, stiffer hands in swing, spray contact, ground balls off bat, pull approach, 70 mph exit velocity. Fields out front, moves with choppy steps, solid around bag with footwork, avg. actions, 69 mph arm across infield.

Duke Coborn, RHP/3B, St. Thomas Academy, 2019
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short turn into higher balance point, slight early collapse down mound, long arm action, delivers from high ¾ slot. Fastball was flat with straight action at 80-82 mph. Though inconsistent; Coborn flashed an above avg. slider with late sharp break. Solid fading action on changeup in bottom of zone. 7.89 runner. Tall stance, hitchy timing, flat line drive swing plane, stiffer swing with solid bat speed, gap to gap approach with spray contact, 87 mph exit velocity. Works around baseball, high fielding position, sure hands, stops and starts while fielding, accurate arm to bag, 79 mph arm across infield. 

Ben Cradle, C/RHP, Bloomington Kennedy, 2019
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #62 player in MN 2019 class. 7.91 runner. Tall narrow stance, dive bomb approach, shoulder load, clean swing plane, solid bat speed, flashes pop in bat with mid/pull approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Comfortable behind plate, solid direction on throws, clean exchange, longer arm action, accurate to bag, 74 mph arm strength with 2.09-2.22 pop times. On mound; higher athletic balance point, lands inline to plate, clears head to allow short arm action to work through zone from OT slot. Fastball was straight at 80-82 mph. 12/5 breaking ball had avg. spin and smaller shape. Solid fade on changeup with down action.

Kathan Decker, SS/RHP, Eastview, 2019
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.58 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, above avg. round of bp, consistently squared baseball, shows good hand/eye coordination, works middle field, hard line drive contact, 82 mph exit velocity. Short compact arm action, works around and through ball, sure hands, quick release, solid actions in field, 71 mph arm across infield. On mound; short rocker step into tilted posture, stiffer lower half, short arm action, with solid extension and finish. Commanded fastball well, worked both sides of plate, at 73-75 mph. Loose spin and early break on 11/5 curveball. Straight changeup with avg. fade for strikes. 

Dylan Drees, RHP, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, 2019
6-foot-8, 175-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. #55 ranked player in MN 2019 class. Tall lean build with narrow shoulders. Early hand rhythm, high leg kick balance point, stiffer lower half, lands inline to catcher, shorter arm action, with ability to throw strikes. Fastball was 80-82 mph, jumped through zone, with arm-side running action. Shows late break on 11/5 curveball with feel for zone. Late diving action on changeup with solid fade. Follow in 2019 class, shows control of three pitches, and will require additional strength gains. 

Sam Dufault, LHP/OF, Mound Westonka, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step, choppy rhythm in delivery, shows ability to repeat, lands inline with catcher, compact arm path through release, has extension to plate. Fastball was 76-78 mph with flashes of arm-side run. Flashed tight spin on 1/7 breaking ball with solid depth. Tends to slow arm on changeup; showing slight run and sink. 7.14 runner. Square stance, shifts weight to back leg with rolling hand load, turns barrel deep in zone, flashes pop in bat, some stiff actions in swing, but drives ball well when extended to the gaps, 87 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, sure hands, opens front side early on throws creating sinking action, solid athlete in field, 77 mph arm from outfield. 

Chad Fox, RHP/OF, Totino Grace, 2019
6-foot-3, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short turn into tall balance point, uncontrolled lower half, short arm action, upright finish. Fastball was 74-76 mph with arm-side sink. Loose spin and shape on 11/5 curveball. Tends to slow arm on changeup creating flat action to plate. 7.5 runner. Closed stance, front heel turn trigger, avg. rhythm, simple swing, line drive path, gap to gap approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, tends to slow down to field, short arm action, stops to throw, avg. accuracy to target, 76 mph arm from outfield. 

Isaac Frandsen, OF/RHP, Monticello, 2019
6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.45 runner. Open stance, strides to square, flat swing plane with occasional lift, best contact to pull side of field with flashes of pop in bat, 86 mph exit velocity. Moves with easy actions in field, long athletic frame, sure hands, works through ball, minimal effort on throws with accuracy and carry to target, 87 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; short turn into athletic balance point, long clean arm action, above avg. extension to plate. Fastball was 80-82 mph with flashes of cutting action to glove side of plate. Looser spin and shape on 11/5 breaking ball. Firm changeup with cutting action to plate. 

Caden Freeman, RHP/3B, Chaska, 2019
6-foot-1,180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On moun; short rocker step into medium balance point, lands inline to catcher, long extended arm path with short finish across body. Fastball was 77-79 mph with occasional cutting action to plate. Sideways spin on breaking ball creating early 10/4 shape. Cut action on changeup thrown with avg. arm speed. 7.52 runner. Square stance with leg kick trigger, short to contact with stiffer line drive swing plane, works down through zone and lands on heavier front foot, spray contact with gap to gap approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Sure hands with soft glove, avg. footwork and tempo to field, long release on throws, accurate arm to bag, 76 mph arm across infield.

TJ Galleberg, OF/LHP, Forest Lake, 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.35 runner. Tall balanced stance, body load, slight rhythm in hands, clean line drive swing, barrels baseball consistently, ground ball and line drive contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, works around and through ball well, solid athleticism in field, sure hands, accurate to target, 76 mph arm from outfield. On mound; controlled delivery to balance point, slight lean in posture, works up and over front side, compact arm action, and lands inline to catcher. Fastball was 74-75 mph, flat action, with upright release. Shows angle on breaking ball with solid spin and shape. Changeup is firm with flat action in zone.

Max Gerstner, RHP/3B, Holy Angels, 2019
5-foot-11, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; sideways rocker step into short tuck and turn balance point, minimal use of glove side, lands sideways on front foot, upright on release, short arm action. Fastball was 75-77 mph with flat action to plate. Slurvey shape on breaking ball with loose spin. Has running action on changeup; thrown with stiff wrist. 7.19 runner. Athletic setup and open stance, shows rhythm in hands, stiffer swing through zone, spray contact, uses both sides of field, 72 mph exit velocity. Plays through ball, taller fielding stance, avg. glove, sure hands, makes routine plays, flashes of actions, 75 mph arm across infield.

Ben Goelz, OF/LHP, Maple Lake, 2019
5-foot-10, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.27 runner. Square stance with body load, avg. rhythm in hands, tends to push barrel through zone, occasionally flashes pop in bat to pull side of field, fly ball contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Strong compact build, above avg. hands and feet in field, works through ball well, well above avg. arm with carry and accuracy to target, 89 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; shorter athletic frame. Worked downhill with fastball that rides through the zone at 79-81 mph. Best secondary is changeup with late arm-side run. Became more consistent with breaking ball flashing tight spin and late 12/6 break.

Zach Gunderson, RHP, Proctor, 2019
6-foot-3, 205-pound right-handed pitcher. Larger frame with present strength. Rocker step into medium balance point, short arm action, lands slightly across body creating deception to hitter, swings across mound in finish. Fastball was 77-81 mph with varying action to plate. 11/5 breaking ball with solid shape and depth. Changeup thrown near fastball arm speed with cutting action to plate. 

Peter Hansen, SS/RHP, Duluth Marshall, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.3 runner. Crouched stance with active load, effects timing, gap to gap approach, spray contact, hard contact when on time, 86 mph exit velocity. Clean arm action with carry and accuracy, under-developed footwork and hands, has solid athleticism, plays with tempo and is aggressive in field, 84 mph arm across infield. On mound; stretch only, up tempo down mound, quick arm, lands slightly across body, close to upright on finish. Fastball was 83-85 mph, sneaks on hitter, with flashes of arm-side run. Loose breaking ball lacks velocity and consistency. Avg. depth and fade on changeup.

Jared Hanson, RHP/OF, Maple Grove, 2019
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; Tall tuck and turn, short stride and lands hard across body, longer arm action, needs better direction to plate. Fastball was 75-78 mph with occasional slight running action. Breaking ball is loose with larger 11/5 shape. Changeup is straight with sinking action to plate. 7.38 runner. Square stance, body load, rotational swing, barrel exits hitting zone early, line drive swing plane, spray contact, 70 mph exit velocity. Accurate throws to plate, large crow hop, short action, avg. footwork and direction, aggressive routes to baseball, 78 mph arm strength from outfield.

Matthew Herold, C/RHP, Mounds View, 2019
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.69 runner. Open stance, easy leg kick, shoulder load, looks to elevate baseball, inverted swing plane, flashed solid contact, spray hitter with avg. pop in bat, 83 mph exit velocity. Flexible and mobile behind plate, shows ability to block, sticks pitches in zone, clean exchange, short arm action, solid accuracy to bag, 71 mph arm strength with 2.00-2.14 pop times. On mound; rocker step into back turn balance point, drop and drive delivery from low ¾ slot. Fastball was 78-79 mph with arm-side run to plate. Slider shape on breaking ball with looser spin and 10/4 shape. Straight changeup with down action to plate. 

Braden Higgins, LHP, Champlin Park, 2019
6-foot-4, 188-pound left-handed pitcher. #16 ranked player in MN 2019 rankings. Fastball worked 82-84 mph with a medium arm swing. Big LHP who was semi-shouldery with the arm action. Some arm side life to the fastball and remains linear down the mound. Long frame plays, and there is more to come with velocity. Looser spin on breaking ball with slider shape. Downhill plane to changeup with late running action. 

Dylan Hoffman, LHP/OF, St. Michael-Albertville, 2019
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; uptempo delivery, solid sequence in moments, stab and hook on back side of arm action, clean out front. Works bottom of zone well with fastball showing run and sink at 69-72 mph. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape with tighter spin and small shape. Shows fade on changeup with solid feel for zone. 7.33 runner. Square balanced stance, slight crouch, knee to knee trigger, clean swing plane, line drive approach, works gap to gap, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid actions, works through ball well, covers ground, sure hands to field, sinking action on throws with accuracy to target, 76 mph arm strength from outfield. 

Collin Hucke, LHP/OF, Byron, 2019
6-foot-2, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; lanky frame, choppy arm action, delivers from OT slot, works downhill to plate. Fastball was 66-69 mph with slight run and sink. Early break with larger shape on 1/7 curveball. Solid fade on changeup thrown for strikes. 7.63 runner. Open stance, rolling hand load, level swing plane, inconsistent timing during bp, spray contact, mid/pull approach, 70 mph exit velocity. Accurate to target, elevated throws, some timid actions, higher fielding position, fields routine, avg. momentum on throws, 72 mph arm strength from outfield. 

Brandon Hugo, SS/RHP, Burnsville, 2019
6-foot-3, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.56 runner. Open stance, leg kick trigger with shoulder load, longer movements create length to swing, avg. barrel skills, long levers create occasional bat speed with hard pull contact, 78 mph exit velocity. Above avg. arm, avg. tempo, fields in high stance, stiffer glove, sure hands, solid athlete in field, 83 mph arm across infield. On mound; long limbs with wiry frame, short turn into controlled athletic balance point, strides across body, clean loose arm out front. Produces heavy 83-84 mph fastballs with run and sink to plate. Breaking ball continued to improve the more he threw it; flashing sharp late break and 11/5 shape. Late arm-side run on changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. 

Cameron Hunter, 1B/RHP, East Ridge, 2019
6-foot, 210-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #15 ranked player in MN 2019 class. 7.78 runner. Square stance, body load, present strength, look to elevate baseball clean path out front with extension, flashes power in bat, has ability to use both sides of field, 91 mph exit velocity. Sure hands with active feet, above avg. arm, receives well around bag, well above avg. arm for position, 86 mph arm across infield. On mound; large durable frame, uptempo, long arm swing, compact and clean out front, projects to throw harder in future. Fastball was 82-84 mph, jumps out of hand well, with flashes of running action. Tighter spin and small break on 11/5 curveball. Straight changeup with down action at plate. 

Zachary Jakubowsky, LHP, Farmington, 2019
6-foot-1, 180-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. Athletic frame with stronger lower half. Easy effort in delivery with 2 piece arm action and is clean out front. Fastball showed arm-side run at 78-79 mph. Loose spin on 1/7 breaking ball but should improve with greater velocity. Above avg. changeup that dives to arm-side of plate. 

Jayden Johannsen, OF/RHP, Sioux Falls Washington (SD), 2019
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #36 ranked player in IA 2019 rankings. 6.81 runner. Open stance, slight body load, lower hand slot, flat line drive swing plane, shows hard contact when stays in middle of field, 88 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, covers ground, has present strength, aggressive routes with sure hands, needs improvement with throwing footwork, has accuracy to target, 84 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; short rocker step, balanced, long arm path, OT slot, works downhill. Fastball was 82-84 mph with heavy feel and straight action to plate. Tight spin on 12/4 breaking ball thrown for strikes. Late down action on split and will be a swing and miss pitch at next level. Some typical rough edges to game as a multi-sport athlete, but has solid tools and could make significant strides once he focuses on one sport. 

Cole Kaufman, LHP, Waukee (IA), 2019
6-foot, 190-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. #66 ranked player in IA 2019 class. Rocker step into medium balance point, lands inline to catcher, short 2 piece arm action, with solid extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying action to plate and solid control of zone. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape with solid depth and shape for strikes. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed with depth and fade to arm-side of plate.

Mitch Klass, LHP/1B, Minnetonka, 2019
6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #28 ranked player in MN 2019 class. Above avg. frame on mound. Fastball velocity plays up and rides through zone at 81-83 mph. Short fast arm swing and changeup played well with fade. Curveball needs development but has chance to be solid usable pitch in future. 7.02 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, rhythm in hands, line drive swing plane, drives ball well with mid/pull approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Active in field, above avg. footwork, comfortable around bag with ability to receive, soft glove, 83 mph arm across infield.

AJ Lattery, RHP/1B, Prior Lake, 2019
6-foot-5, 235-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #25 ranked player in MN 2019 class. Fastball touched 90 mph and worked 86-88. Comes out very easy and has a chance to make an even bigger jump heading into the summer. Ball jumps out of hand and he repeated delivery with ease. Changeup worked at 80 mph with above avg. feel for zone. Curveball had avg. depth with 11/5 shape at 70-71 mph. 7.83 runner. Tall stance, balanced stride, lift in swing plane with length to contact, shows pop in bat, gap to gap approach, 93 mph exit velocity. Good feet to field, works out front, sure hands, solid receiver around bag, above avg. arm for position, 84 mph arm across infield. 

Bryce Lovcik, C/RHP, Maranatha Christian Academy, 2019
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #12 ranked player in MN 2019 class. Athletic frame with present lean strength. 7.31 runner. Open stance, easy knee to knee trigger, some length to contact, generates bat speed, solid round of bp, consistent solid contact, mid/pull approach with line drive swing plane, 89 mph exit velocity. Soft hands, blocks well, high stance, clean exchange, quick release, accurate to bag, 77 mph arm strength with 1.87-1.96 pop times.
