Q&A With Northwestern-IA Commit: Bryce Bisenius (Dowling Catholic)

Bryce Bisenius, 1B/RHP, Dowling Catholic, Class of 2015

PBR: Why did you choose Northwestern College in Orange City?

BISENIUS: I wanted to play baseball in college and was very excited about Northwestern’s new indoor facility (especially for a northern Iowa school) that will be ready spring of 2015 and not to mention their winning baseball program. Must be doing something right up there!

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

BISENIUS: I hadn’t pinpointed any other specific schools other than possibly looking into the junior college route, as I really wanted to continue playing baseball.

PBR: Where did they first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?

BISENIUS: They first saw me at the August 2014 PBR showcase in Iowa City for class of 2015 players. I was contacted by Coach Wede and he expressed his interest in me and wanted to set up a visit. He worked around my football schedule for a Saturday visit. I was able to do the college visit as well as warm up with the team and meet the players. Coach continued to communicate with me and took an interest in ME as a person, not just a future player.

PBR: What role do you expect to play your first year on campus?

BISENIUS: I want to be able to contribute as a first-baseman.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

BISENIUS: I actually have a couple: My older cousin, Joe Bisenius. I watched him as a young kid play in the MILB and MLB and saw up close that dreams can come true. Also, my high school coaches Ben Stockton and Jeremy Eldred. They continue to encourage me and have helped me both physically and mentally with the game of baseball. Coach Stockton would even stay after practices to work with me on my hitting and the mental game.

PBR: What have you worked on/improved since last year?

BISENIUS: I continue to work on hitting and pitching. I balanced a fall baseball league along with football and was able to hit .500.

PBR: Who is the toughest player that you have faced in Iowa?

BISENIUS: I’ve played in a spring league the last two seasons so I’ve seen a number of very good pitchers; Keaton McKinney, Jake Westphal, Cole Baker, Chris Comito, and Mitch Keller.

PBR: What are your thoughts on the recruiting process? Any advice for future players in your position.

BISENIUS: Don’t give up if you don’t have any high school stats. Attend as many showcases as you can and put your best efforts forward at all times. Really, don’t give up! Someone will see something in you that fits their needs and give you the opportunity to pursue your dream of playing college baseball.
