2013 Second Team and Third Team All-State Picks

Second Team All-State

Pitchers

Mitch Schulewitz, RHP, Mundelein HS, Class of 2013
Coming from a low-3/4 slot, Schulewitz posted a 10-1 record with a 0.95 ERA. In 58 innings, he struck out 70 and walked only nine batters. Opponents hit just .126 against him. Signed at Illinois-Chicago.

Mike Miller, RHP, Lincoln-Way North HS, Class of 2013
A big-game pitcher, Miller’s 8-0 record included victories over Lyons Township, Sandburg and a 9-inning shutout against Lincoln-Way Central in the playoffs, to name a few. He finished with a 0.97 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. In 58 innings, he struck out 68. Signed at SIU-Edwardsville.

Evan Martens, RHP, Lockport HS, Class of 2013
The right-hander kept the Porters in the top 10 rankings for most of the season. He went 10-1 – only loss came in the 4A supersectionals to eventual-champion Mount Carmel – with a 0.96 ERA. In 75 innings he tallied 75 Ks, 19 walks and yielded 53 hits. Signed at SIU-Edwardsville.

Catchers

Brent Gibbs, C, Alton HS, Class of 2013
No catcher in the state possesses a stronger arm than this three-year standout. Gibbs also did it at the plate, tallying 20 doubles, two homers and 33 RBI. He batted .412 and .620 on-base percentage. In three varsity seasons, he racked up 106 RBI. Signed at Indiana University.

Derek Bangert, C, Lockport HS, Class of 2013
As arguably the most feared right-handed power hitter in the state, Bangert blasted nine home runs, eight doubles and 45 RBI to help lead the Porters to the 4A supersectionals. Bangert finished with a .368 batting average. Signed at Heartland CC.

First Baseman

Will Kincanon, RHP/1B, Riverside-Brookfield HS, Class of 2014
The athletic 6-foot-3 two-way talent is more known for his pitching prowess – and rightfully so. The junior right-hander posted an 11-1 record with 118 strikeouts to 22 walks in 79 innings. He had a 1.06 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. The left-handed hitter also did it at the plate: 16 doubles, 37 RBI and a .425 batting average. Uncommitted.

Middle Infield

Will Farmer, SS, Mundelein HS, Class of 2013
Few, if any, were more sure-handed in the field. Farmer committed only three errors all season for the surprising Mustangs, who sat in the top 10 for the first half of the season. He also batted .463 with 40 runs, 44 hits, four homers and 26 RBI while anchoring the defense that won 61 games in two seasons. Signed at Southern Illinois.

Austin Cangelosi, SS, Sandburg HS, Class of 2013
The power-hitting leadoff hitter belted eight homers, three doubles, three triples while reaching safely in all 30 games. Cangelosi also scored 41 runs, drove in 22, swiped 22 of 23 bases while anchoring Sandburg’s defense. Signed at Indiana.

Third Base

Spencer Gaa, 3B, Metamora HS, Class of 2013
As one of the state’s most dynamic athletes, the right-handed hitting Gaa batted .492 with 10 doubles, 11 triples, five homers and 32 RBI. He also scored 49 runs, slugged at an .865 clip and had an OPS of 1.429. Signed at Bradley.

Outfield

Corey Ray, OF, Simeon HS, Class of 2013
As one of the most publicized prospects over the last four years, the left-handed hitting Ray helped Simeon to the Chicago Public League championship with his all-around stellar play. He tallied eight doubles, five triples, three homers, 21 stolen bases, 31 runs, 29 RBI while batting .413. Ray also played a top-level centerfield for the Wolverines. Signed at Louisville.

Bryan Klendworth, OF, Prairie Ridge HS, Class of 2013
While Prairie Ridge opponents focused on high-profile prospect Jordan Getzelman, Klendworth made them pay in a big way. The athletic right-handed hitter batted .508 with 10 doubles, seven triples, eight home runs, 64 hits, 50 runs scored, 45 RBI and stole 21 bases for good measure. Signed at Olivet-Nazarene.

Jason Gasser, OF, Mount Carmel HS, Class of 2013
The Chicago Catholic Blue Player of the Year quietly served as the anchor to the Caravan’s Class 4A state championship. The left-handed hitter played a top-level defensive centerfield while batting .414 with eight doubles, three homers and three triples. Signed at Northern Illinois.

Utility

Keith Lehmann, RHP/3B, Lyons Township HS
As one of the most decorated winners in recent memory, the two-way standout went 8-2 on the mound for the Lions with 86 strikeouts in 71.2 innings. Offensively, Lehmann tallied 25 RBI, six doubles, two triples and a homer. In his career, he won a state championship, summer state championship and finished runner-up as a junior, when he earned first-team All-State. Signed at Michigan.

Third Team All-State

Pitchers

Mike Costanzo, LHP, St. Rita HS, Class of 2014
The junior left-hander served as St. Rita’s workhorse. Pitching against all the top teams in the state, Costanzo racked up 96 strikeouts, 41 walks, and five complete games. He finished with a 9-3 record – his three losses were to 4A champion Mount Carmel, 3A champion Joliet Catholic and Chicago Catholic Blue champion St. Laurence. Committed to Austin Peay.

Nick Hieb, RHP, Normal West HS, Class of 2013
As the Wildcats’ No. 2 pitcher behind first-team All-Stater Matthew James, Hieb went a perfect 11-0 with a 1.72 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP. In 61 innings, he struck out 59 and walked 15. Illinois State walk-on.

Jeremy Kravetz, LHP, Mount Carmel HS, Class of 2013
No one played a bigger role during the Caravan’s 4A championship run than Kravetz, who earned complete-game victories in the championship game, supersectional, sectional semifinal, and a save in the sectional final. The left-hander finished with a 9-3 record and a 1.36 ERA. Signed at Kansas.

Catcher

Ryan Lidge, C, Barrington HS, Class of 2013
The switch-hitting Lidge tallied eight home runs, eight doubles and 39 RBI for the Broncos. He batted .384 with a .504 on-base percentage. Also one of the top defensive catchers in the state. Signed at Notre Dame.

First Base

Keaton Wright, 1B, Triad HS, Class of 2013
A four-year starter at Triad, the left-handed hitting Wright finished his stellar career in fine fashion, tallying 18 doubles, seven homers, 53 hits, 38 RBI and 28 runs. He batted .424 with a .736 slugging percentage. Signed at SIU-Edwardsville.

Middle Infield

Aaron Meyer, SS, Belleville West HS, Class of 2013
The athletic left-handed hitting leadoff man batted .470 with a .573 on-base percentage. Meyer also notched nine doubles, one triple, one homer, 10 stolen bases, and 16 RBI while playing a superlative defensive shortstop. Signed at Missouri State.

Marshawn Taylor, Simeon HS, Class of 2013
Arguably the best defensive shortstop in Illinois, the left-handed hitting Taylor swiped 21 bases, scored 31 runs and drove in 27. He finished with six doubles, four triples while batting .405. Signed at Eastern Illinois.

Third Base

Ricardo Ramirez, 3B, De La Salle HS, Class of 2013
The physical, strong-armed Ramirez blasted 10 home runs, 11 doubles, 43 RBI while batting .446. He also scored 35 runs and slugged at an .848 clip. Signed at Illinois-Chicago.

Outfield

Colin Lyman, OF, Huntley HS, Class of 2013
The athletic, left-handed hitting Lyman does everything on the field well. Offensively, he tallied 14 doubles, one triple, one homer, 33 runs and 23 RBI while batting .425 with an on-base percentage of .505. Few cover more ground than Lyman in centerfield.

Andrew Shadid, OF, Peoria Notre Dame HS, Class of 2013
Only a sophomore, the highly athletic Shadid delivered in a big way, tallying 17 doubles, six triples, five homers, 37 runs, 32 RBI, 55 hits while batting .504. Also a football standout.

Eric Hall, OF, Richards HS, Class of 2013
Offensively, few put up more impressive numbers than Hall. He finished with 11 home runs, 12 doubles, one triple, 40 RBI, 35 runs and nine stolen bases.

Utility

Matt Brill, RHP/OF, Moline HS, Class of 2013
The athletic two-way talent was the highest Illinois prep player drafted – in the 24th round by the Mets. The 6-foot-2 Brill’s big curveball and upper-80s fastball helped him go 6-2 with a 1.76 ERA for the Maroons, who advanced to the 4A supersectionals. He struck out 74 in 47.2. Offensively, he tallied 10 doubles, six homers, three triples, 33 RBI and six stolen bases. Signed at Appalachian State.
