2014 PBR Second Team All-State

Pitchers

Mike Costanzo, LHP, St. Rita HS, 2014
A two-time All-State selection, the left-hander has been the Mustangs’ big-game pitcher for the last two seasons. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Austin Peay recruit delivered another incredible campaign, finishing with an 11-2 record and a 1.40 ERA. In 80 innings pitched, Costanzo racked up 107 strikeouts and 48 walks. He also pitched the Mustangs into the state championship game by throwing a gutty four-hit complete game with 11 strikeouts to beat South Elgin in the semifinals.

Mitch Vogrin, RHP, Minooka HS, 2014
The three-year varsity standout dominated top-level competition all season. The Illinois State recruit posted a 9-0 record with one save and a 1.15 ERA. In 67 innings, he racked up 85 strikeouts to 22 walks. Vogrin also threw one no-hitter and had a 0.81 WHIP.

Ryan Netemeyer, RHP, Mascoutah HS, 2014
Mascoutah was one of the top teams in the St. Louis-metro area thanks to Netemeyer’s dominance. The Southern Illinois recruit finished with a 9-1 record and two saves. He had a 0.98 ERA, and he struck out 87, allowed 36 hits in 64 innings pitched.

Catcher

Mitch Trees, Sacred Heart-Griffin HS, 2014
The top defensive catcher in the state, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Trees also powered the Cyclones to a runner-up finish in Class 3A. The Louisville recruit finished with seven doubles, five triples, five homers, 37 RBI and 42 runs. Drafted in the 11th round by the Reds and signed.

Mike Papierski, Lemont HS, 2014
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound LSU recruit was a dominant force behind the plate and at the plate. The switch-hitter tallied 12 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 30 RBI and 42 runs scored. Papierski, who has one of the strongest arms in the state, was walked 29 times and finished with an amazing .543 on-base percentage. Drafted in the 16th round by the Toronto Blue Jays.

First Base

Anthony Santos, York HS, 2014
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound two-way talent did it all in leading the Dukes to a share of the West Suburban Silver title. The Black Hawk College recruit batted .460 with 12 doubles, three homers, one triple and 37 RBI. Santos also went 7-1 on the mound with a 1.04 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP in 47 innings pitched.

Middle Infield

Mike Wisz, Lemont HS, 2014
The most consistent offensive force for the Class 3A state champions, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Houston recruit batted .471 with 10 doubles, two triples, five homers and 38 RBI. He also scored 37 runs and had a .504 on-base percentage while playing a solid defensive shortstop.

Ako Thomas, Mount Carmel HS, 2015
A top-level defensive second baseman, the 5-foot-8 junior can turn a double play with the best of them. But ultimately, the Michigan recruit earned his spot because of his bat. The right-handed hitter seemingly barrels everything thrown his way. He finished the season with season with 14 doubles, two triples, three homers, 52 hits, 48 runs scored and 31 RBI. He batted .419 and struck out only six times all season facing the top pitchers in the state.

Third Base

Joey Polak, Quincy Notre Dame HS, 2016
The only sophomore to make any of the All-State teams, the physically imposing 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed hitter was an offensive force this spring. Polak batted .533 with five homers, 12 doubles, one triple and 57 hits. He finished with 49 RBI and four stolen bases.

Nick Dalesandro, Joliet Catholic Academy HS, 2015
One of the most versatile players in the state, Dalesandro is one of the top defensive catchers in the Midwest, but played outfield to preserve his arm on the mound. A junior who’s committed to Purdue, Dalesandro did it all for the Hilltoppers this season. Offensively, he batted .409 with seven doubles, four triples, three homers, 28 RBI and 25 runs scored. On the mound, the right-hander posted a 7-1 record with one save and a 1.39 ERA. In 55 innings, he struck out 55 and walked 18.

Darius Day, Simeon HS, 2014
The left-handed hitting Arizona recruit batted .491 with seven doubles, three triples, two homers, 23 RBI and 30 runs scored. He also swiped 28 of 30 bases. Day was drafted in the 23rd round by the Texas Rangers.

Phil Kunsa, Providence Catholic HS, 2014
Kunsa and first-team All-State 3B Dylan Rosa comprised one of the state’s most formidable run-producing duos in leading Providence to the 4A state title. The Middle Tennessee State recruit blasted 11 homers, 12 doubles, one triple and drove in 46 runs.

Utility

Luke Morgan, RHP/SS, Lincoln-Way West HS
The four-year two-way standout did it all for the Warriors, who were ranked in the Top 25 for the entire season. The South Alabama recruit posted a 7-0 record with four saves, including a dominant victory against defending champ Joliet Catholic in the playoffs. He finished with a 0.50 ERA, 0.43 WHIP and 54 Ks in 42 innings. A top-level defensive shortstop, Morgan also tallied seven doubles, three triples, four homers, 26 RBI and 26 runs while batting .376.
