By Drew Locascio

The 2018 overall rankings were updated last week covering our entire coverage area of 27 states and the Province of Ontario. The overall rankings were expanded to 150 prospects and the state of Illinois saw seven of their own in the rankings. Five of the seven are new to the 2018 PBR Overall Rankings.

Illinois’ 2018 class is led by one of the top prospects across the region in OF Alek Thomas (Mount Carmel). Thomas who is now No. 2 in the PBR Overall Rankings had a busy summer, participating in the PBR Future Games, Area Code Games and the Area Code Underclass Games. He is a superior L/L athlete who flashes easy pop for his 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame. Also, runs a 6.74 and gets great reads on balls in the outfield.

Another 2018 who finds himself in the overall rankings once again is SS Branden Comia (Sandburg). Comia is the top ranked SS in the IL and No. 56 prospect in the Overall Rankings. PBR Future Games participant, 5-foot-10, 172-pound right-handed hitting shortstop is an advanced hitter, flashes explosive hands and the ball jumps off his bat. Defensively, smooth athletic actions, soft hands and plenty of arm strength to stick at shortstop.

A top newcomer to the overall rankings is RHP Jake Rosing (Richmond Burton). Now ranked No. 2 in IL and No. 34 overall, Rosing who committed to Louisville shortly before the Future Games, is an athletic 6-foot-1, 150-pound right-handed pitcher who has been up to 89 mph. Also, features a sharp breaking ball from 68-72 mph.

Some other Illinois prospects new to the 2018 PBR Overall Rankings include OF Brooks Coetzee (Mahomet-Seymour), catcher Jordon Rogers (Simeon), 3B Zaid Walker (Homewood-Flossmoor) and RHP/C Anthony Calarco (New Trier)
