2022 PBR Third Team All-State

The PBR Illinois team wraps up its coverage of the 2022 IHSA baseball season with a look at the Third Team All-State roster. We began the All-State coverage with a look at the First-Team All-State and Second Team All-State honors for the 2022 IHSA season. Given the amount of talent residing in the state, the Third-Team roster is stacked with players who could easily fit in on the First-Team, given the huge numbers they put up this spring.

Without further ado, here is the roster for the 2022 PBR Illinois’ Third-Team All-State.

PITCHERS

Adam Guazzo RHP / Huntley, IL / 2022

Valparaiso commit. Guazzo ended the year with a perfect 8-0 record to go along with 52 innings pitched, 74 strikeouts and a 1.48 ERA. The right-hander was a key factor in Huntley’s success on the mound this past spring, and his efforts earned him FVC All Conference as well as FVC Pitcher of the Year.

Mason Lei RHP / Freeport, IL / 2023

The uncommitted incoming senior posted one of the best statistical lines in the state this past spring; firing 58 innings with 101 strikeouts and a 1.08 ERA. Throughout the season, the right-hander tossed a five-inning perfect game with 10 strikeouts and a five-inning no hitter with 11 strikeouts. Lei was a NIC10 All-Conference selection for his efforts this season.

Simon Skroch LHP / Yorkville , IL / 2024

As just a sophomore, Skroch put up some upper-class numbers this past spring; finishing with a perfect 7-0 record on 49.1 innings pitched, 72 strikeouts and a 0.85 ERA. The uncommitted southpaw earned SPC - West All-Conference honors at the conclusion of the spring season.

Ethan Storm RHP / Sycamore , IL / 2022

Rock Valley commit. The right-hander finished the year with a perfect 9-0 record, 49.2 innings, 91 strikeouts and a 1.27 ERA. Storm was one of the most dominant postseason pitchers in the state over the spring; firing a combined 14 innings with only two walks, 21 strikeouts and a no-hitter in the Sectional Championship. Storm went on to set the school record for wins in a single season, while also finishing in the top three all-time for strikeouts and ERA.

Max Vaisvila LHP / Willowbrook, IL / 2022

Loras commit. The southpaw was the ace of a 25-5 Willowbrook club and his stats back that up; collecting a perfect 9-0 record with 47 innings, 95 strikeouts and a 1.19 ERA. Vaisvila was awarded West Suburban Conference Pitcher of the Year at the conclusion of the season.

CATCHERS

Brendan Brock C / Mascoutah , IL / 2022

The senior backstop hit to a .477 clip in 109 at-bats with seven home runs, four triples, 16 doubles, 43 RBIs, 57 runs scored and 27 stolen bases. With a season this dominant, it should be no surprise that Brock broke the Mascoutah single season records for batting average, runs scored, RBIs, home runs and stolen bases.

Grant Huebner C / Edwardsville, IL / 2022

St. Charles CC commit. Huebner was the spark plug for the State Champion Edwardsville Tigers, leading them behind the plate day in and day out with high-motor defense. In 116 at-bats, the right-handed hitter finished the season with a .414 batting average, five home runs, two triples, seven doubles, 38 RBIs, 43 runs scored and 23 stolen bases on 24 attempts.

FIRST BASEMAN

Amir Gray 1B / Brother Rice, IL / 2023

Purdue commit. The left-handed hitter was one of the toughest outs in the Chicago Catholic Blue Conference this past spring, hitting to a .417 clip in 127 at-bats with three home runs, 11 doubles, 31 RBIs, 35 runs scored and only striking out six times.

MIDDLE INFIELDERS

Beau Durbin SS / 2B / Morton, IL / 2022

The senior shortstop hit his way to a .469 batting average in 114 at-bats with six home runs, two triples, 11 doubles, 45 RBIs, 52 runs scored and 20 stolen bases on 22 attempts. Durbin also recorded an on-base percentage of .592 while only striking out 13 times to 20 walks.

Jake Munroe SS / 3B / Champaign Central, IL / 2022

John A. Logan commit. In 96 at-bats, the right-handed hitter put up a .406 batting average with eight home runs, four triples, six doubles, 45 RBIs, 49 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. A Unanimous Big 12 Conference selection the past two seasons, Munroe now holds the career home run record at Champaign Central with 14.

Andrew Pyszka SS / Putnam County, IL / 2023

The uncommitted incoming senior put up an eye-popping .512 batting average in 121 at-bats; also clubbing five home runs, two triples, 16 doubles, 30 RBIs, 63 runs scored and stealing a staggering 49 bases. Pyszka recorded an on-base percentage of .610, and to cap it all off, he struck out only eight times to 24 walks. His stellar year earned him not only First Team All-Conference, but Unanimous Conference Player of the Year.

THIRD BASEMAN

Anthony Martinez 3B / RHP / Lockport, IL / 2023

Uncommitted. Martinez was firmly placed in the heart of the Porters’ potent lineup. In 107 at-bats, the right-handed hitter recorded a .382 batting average with five home runs, one triple, 10 doubles, 33 RBIs, 38 runs scored and stole nine bases. On the other side of the ball, Martinez fired 12.1 innings with 22 strikeouts and a 2.27 ERA.

OUTFIELDERS 

Dennis Butler III OF / Simeon, IL / 2024

Louisville commit. The L/L outfielder recorded a .436 batting average in 94 at-bats with two home runs, two triples, five doubles, 25 RBIs, 47 runs scored and stole an eye-popping 58 bases on 63 attempts.

Lucas Smith OF / Nazareth, IL / 2023

Illinois-Chicago commit. In 126 at-bats, Smith recorded a .444 batting average with three home runs, three triples, 17 doubles, 26 RBIs, 44 runs scored, 13 stolen bases and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. As the heart and soul of the 3A State Champion Roadrunners, Smith also set the school record for doubles and was named to the ESCC All-Conference Team. 

Adison Worthman OF / Bloomington, IL / 2023

Missouri commit. Worthman put together yet another stellar year; in 96 at-bats he hit .428 with eight home runs, three triples, 12 doubles, 39 RBIs, 48 runs scored and swiped 29 bases. Worthman was awarded Big 12 Player of the Year for the second year in a row, and now PBR All-State for the second year in a row as well.

UTILITY

Tyler Altenbaumer RHP / 3B / Saint Joseph-Ogden, IL / 2022

Southwestern Illinois JC commit. Altenbaumer put together a dominant year on both sides of the ball; hitting .400 in 110 at-bats with one home run, two triples, nine doubles, 41 RBIs, 45 runs scored, nine stolen bases and only striking out 14 times against 20 walks. On the mound, he recorded a perfect 10-0 record with 53.1 innings pitched, 86 strikeouts and a 0.79 ERA. Throughout the season, Altenbaumer hurled six complete games and was a part of a combined no-hitter. He is now second all-time in wins at St. Joseph Ogden without even having a sophomore year, boasting a staggering 20-0 record.

Bryce Goodwine OF / LHP / Hononegah, IL / 2022

Indianapolis commit. The switch-hitting two-way standout put together one of the more dominant seasons in program history. He finished the year with a .434 batting average in 83 at-bats with six home runs, four triples, three doubles, 30 RBIs, 41 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. On the mound, he finished the year with a 6-1 record, 39 innings pitched, 43 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.26 - also firing two complete-game shutouts. Goodwine was also awarded NIC-10 MVP at the conclusion of the spring.

Joseph Martin RHP / SS / Newark, IL / 2023

Uncommitted. Martin was a force at the plate and on the mound, hitting .434 in 76 at-bats with two home runs, one triple, seven doubles, 29 RBIs and 33 runs scored - also going 7-2 on the mound with 51.1 innings pitched, 110 strikeouts and a 0.68 ERA. Throughout the season, he twirled impressive performances against Hinckley Big Rock (6.1 innings, 18 strikeouts) along with two complete-game shutouts against Serena - combining for only six hits allowed and 27 strikeouts. Martin earned unanimous All-Conference honors for the second year in a row.
