All-State Games: Pitcher Analysis

On Tuesday, June 29, the PBR Illinois staff hosted the All-State Games at The MAX in LaGrange, IL. The invite-only event featured over 50 of the top 2023s from Illinois and Wisconsin, with several high-follow prospects emerging after strong showings from the day.

We began rolling the position-by-position analysis from this event last week, making our way around the diamond with the catching group, outfield crop, and the infielders. 

Today, we’ll cap off our event analysis by moving to the mound with all of the day’s pitching reports. This event served as a major identifier to help fill both the Team Illinois and Team Wisconsin rosters at the PBR Future Games, the most coveted event on our company calendar. Of this group of arms that attended, 10 players eventually earned invites to represent their respective states down in LakePoint. 

Read below for all the pitcher scouting reports from the day.

TOP PITCHING PROSPECTS

1. Thomas Burns, Hortonville (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/OF. Represented Team Wisconsin at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 6-foot-3, 180-pounds. Lanky, thin-levered frame with plenty of future projection attached.
Delivery: Smooth, tempoed tall/fall type delivery with fluid movement patterns downhill. Front side stays closed, open-toed landing, athletic finish through release.
Arm Action: RH. Long and loose arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T89, 86-89 mph. Four-seam fastball, mostly straight with some finish through the zone. T2082, 2004 average rpm.
CB: 72-73 mph. 12/6 shape, used more to expand the zone low. T2101, 2040 average rpm.
CUT: 72-74 mph. 10/4 shape, landed for strikes more consistently. 

2. Anthony Edge, Jacobs (IL), 2023. Bradley commit.
Positional Profile: C/RHP. Represented Team Illinois at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 5-foot-9, 180-pounds. Proportionally strong frame, sturdy shoulders.
Delivery: Smooth tall/fall type delivery, fluid movement patterns downhill, strong front side, works in line to target and lands square into a strong lead leg block.
Arm Action: RH. Short, quick arm circle with above-average arm speed, loose shoulder, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T87, 86-87 mph. Two-seam type that plays with late run and sink, averaged 12 inches of horizontal movement, strikes.  T2187, 2076 average rpm.
SL: 73-75 mph. Thrown with fastball intent, tight 11/5 spin, feel to land for strikes.  T1958, 1905 average rpm.
CH: 78-79 mph. Thrown with fastball arm speed and from a similar slot, flashed arm-side action.

3. Ryan Geraghty, Carmel Catholic (IL), 2023. Wichita State commit.
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP. Represented Team Illinois at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. Athletic, well-proportioned frame.
Delivery: Tall/fall type, early separation out of the glove, heavy disengage off the rubber, closed toe landing, slightly rotational at times.
Arm Action: RH. Long arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T90, 86-89 mph. Straight, four-seam type.  T2381, 2162 average rpm.
CB: 69-71 mph. Flashed sharp action off an 11/5 plane.  T2348, 2315 average rpm.
CH: 69-72 mph. Occasional fading action to the arm-side, straighter action on average. 

4. Noah Dreier, Brookfield Central (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/RHP. Represented Team Wisconsin at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 5-foot-10, 170-pounds.
Delivery: Clean directional delivery, athletic and compact, smooth rhythm, good balance point, lands square to target.
Arm Action: RH. Short arm action, over-the-top arm slot.
FB: T86, 83-86 mph. Straight four-seam action, plays true with backspin. T2091, 1963 average rpm.
CB: 66-71 mph. 11/5 shape, depth and tight spin; late action at times. T2466, 2294 average rpm.
SL: 72-75 mph. Showed tight action, 10/4 shape, potential swing and miss offering. Best of two breaking balls. T2301, 2206 average rpm.

5. Jack Duncan, Macomb (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-foot-1, 190-pounds. Strong, sturdy frame, defined lower half.
Delivery: Stretch only, tall/fall type delivery, athletic at balance point, level front side throughout. Hands separate on time, advanced hip/shoulder separation at front footstrike, works in line to target throughout. Fluid, easy all-around operation.
Arm Action: RH. Long arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T88, 82-87 mph. Four-seam type with mostly straight action, firm as it enters the zone.  T2400, 2192 average rpm.
SL: 72-74 mph. 10/4 shape, slight lateral action, landed for strikes.  T2253, 2186 average rpm.

6. Brayden Olson, Saint Croix Falls (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/RHP. Represented Team Wisconsin at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 6-foot, 165-pounds. Athletic, long-limbed frame.
Delivery: Athletic delivery with long levers, lands square and works online
Arm Action: RH. Long, loose, clean arm action, lively with upside, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T85, 83-85 mph. Slight arm side run. T1950, 1827 average rpm.
SL: 64-65 mph. Sweeping action, flashed swing and miss properties. T1893, 1893 average rpm.
CH: 72-74 mph. Drops slot, shows sinking action.

7. Calvin Proskey, Oak Park-River Forest (IL), 2023. UC Santa Barbara commit.
Positional Profile: RHP/SS
Body: 6-foot-2, 155-pounds. Lanky, high-waisted frame with levers that stand to add mass.
Delivery: Clean tall/fall type delivery, upright posture at balance point, strong front side, lead leg swings to footstrike with a closed-toe landing. Smooth and controlled movement patterns throughout, repeats.
Arm Action: RH. Clean arm action, high 3/4 slot, some length on back side.
FB: T85, 84-85 mph. Slight arm-side action at times, consistently located for strikes.  T2240, 2092 average rpm.
CB: 70-73 mph. Flashed tight action off an 11/5 plane, above-average feel for pitch.  T2331, 2205 average rpm.
CH: 76-77 mph. Deceptive arm action, slight sink, advanced feel and confidence for the pitch.

8. Kyler Kennen, Jacobs (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-foot-5, 180-pounds. Long and lanky levers, highly projectable high-waisted frame.
Delivery: Tall/fall type delivery with controlled downhill ride, athletic at balance point, shoulders stay level throughout. Lead leg swings into an open-toed landing, works in line to target, square finish. Rhythmic and repeats.
Arm Action: RH. Long and loose arm action, slightly elevated 3/4 slot.
FB: T84, 82-84 mph. Present arm-side run created from slot, above-average feel for the strike zone.  T2381, 2248 average rpm.
CB: 62-65 mph. Decelerates arm action and elevates slot on average. 12/6 shape, early action.  T1785, 1766 average rpm.
CH: 75-77 mph. Thrown with similar slot and intent than fastball. Primarily played straight, flashed sink.  

9. Adam Behrens, Warren Township (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/ Represented Team Illinois at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 6-foot-3, 195-pounds. Sturdy, durable frame.
Delivery: Quick tempoed tall/fall type delivery, upright at balance point, high front side. Advanced hip/shoulder separation at footstrike, works direct to target, intentful throughout and throws with some effort.
Arm Action: RH. Long and loose arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T86, 80-85 mph. Straight four-seam type with some carry as it enters the zone.  T2200, 1988 average rpm.
CB: 67-68 mph. 11/5 shape with depth, downer action. Does decelerate arm slightly in relation to the fastball.  T1948, 1924 average rpm.
CH: 71-72 mph. Thrown with slightly less intent than fastball. Showed arm-side run, limits spin.

10. Logan Barnett, Pontiac (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/C
Body: 6-foot-4, 230-pounds. Ultra-physical frame with strength attached throughout.
Delivery: Drop/drive type delivery, stacks weight onto back quad, high front side, works in line to target with an intentful finish through release. Fast tempoed worker, repeats.
Arm Action: RH. Shorter, compact arm action that works from an over-the-top slot.
FB: T87, 84-87 mph. Plays firm as it enters the zone, lively in upper quadrants. Mostly straight action, occasionally cuts it.  T2173, 1974 average rpm.
CB: 70-72 mph. Knuckle-curve type, 12/6 shape. Swing-and-miss upside.  T1949, 1842 average rpm.
CH: 79-80 mph. Minimal usage, thrown from a higher slot on average than fastball, straight action.  

BEST OF THE REST (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)

Ian Boal, Johnsburg (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: LHP/OF
Body: 6-foot, 160-pounds. Athletic, well-proportioned frame with definition in the lower half.
Delivery: Rhythmic tall/fall type delivery, upright posture throughout, level shoulders, short strider downhill, closed toe landing.
Arm Action: LH. Short draw out of the glove, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T83, 81-83 mph. Slight run and sink, best when working to the glove side.  T2189, 2049 average rpm.
CB: 67-69 mph. 1/7 shape, shorter wrinkle, breaks early off plane.  T2281, 2237 average rpm.
CH: 69-71 mph. Maintains arm speed throughout, flashed late sinking action. 

Gavyn Bowen, Pewaukee (WI), 2023. Alabama-Birmingham commit.
Positional Profile: LHP/OF Represented Team Wisconsin at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. Long, lanky levers with room for more physical maturity.
Delivery: Side rocker step into athletic leg lift, lands square and works rotationally around front side.
Arm Action: LH. Long, loose arm action that finishes from a 3/4 slot.
FB: T84, 82-84 mph. More velocity left in the tank. Showed late cutting action to the glove-side.  T2300, 2031 average rpm.
SL: 69-70 mph. Sweeping action, 2/8 shape, thrown with confidence, swing and miss potential.  T2444, 2271 average rpm. 

Jake Catalano, Brookfield East (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/ Represented Team Wisconsin at the 2021 Future Games.
Body: 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. Large, upside frame with some physicality.
Delivery: Tall/fall type delivery, high leg kick to balance point, short strider downhill, early hip rotation into footstrike, square finish. Relatively easy effort throughout.
Arm Action: RH. Shorter compact arm stroke, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T85, 83-84 mph. Hard, heavy running action as it enters the zone.  T2491, 2270 average rpm.
CB: 72-73 mph. 11/5 shape, slurve type, occasional sweep action. T2525, 2366 average rpm.
CH: 71-77 mph. Thrown at near fastball arm speed from a near identical slot on average, stayed low in the zone. 

Ean DiPasquale, Belleville East  (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-foot-2, 205-pounds. Thick, sturdy frame; physical lower half.
Delivery: Controlled methodical delivery, drop/drive type action, heavy front hip turn prior to engaging downhill, stacks backside. Shoulders stay linear, front foot lands open, downward finish through release.
Arm Action: RH. Short arm stroke with some poke on the backside, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T83, 81-82 mph. Low-spin sinker type, heavy action, plays best at the bottom of the zone as a ground ball induced offering.  T1762, 1622 average rpm.
CB: 66-72 mph. 12/6 shape, spun with more depth than slider.  T2014, 1966 average rpm.
SL: 71-75 mph. Used earlier in the count to land for strikes, occasional swing and miss, best feel breaking ball at the moment.  T2050, 1986 average rpm.
CH: 78-79 mph. Similar arm slot to fastball, fading action that mirrors fastball best low in the zone.  

Lucas Foley, Lake Zurich (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: LHP/OF Showed advanced feel for a three-pitch mix.
Body: 6-foot-2, 185-pounds. Long, lanky frame that projects.
Delivery: Tall/fall type delivery, heavy front hip lead downhill, tight knee tuck, works in line to target, upright through release.
Arm Action: LH. Shorter arm stroke, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T83, 81-82 mph. Occasionally cuts the fastball, plays with arm-side run when fingers stay behind the seams. Advanced feel for the strike zone.  T2215, 2120 average rpm.
SL: 68-70 mph. 1/7 shape with depth, flashed late swing-and-miss action. T2026, 1992 average rpm.
CH: 70-73 mph. Maintains fastball arm speed and slot. Natural sinking action, feel for the bottom of the zone.  

Christian Graves, Marengo (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-foot-2, 200-pounds. Physical build with advanced strength throughout frame.
Delivery: Tall and fall type delivery, directional down the mound, stays balanced.
Arm Action: RH. Long loose arm action, over the top slot.
FB: T86, 84-86 mph. Mostly straight, four seam type, plays best at top of zone. T1934, 1854 average rpm.
CB: 67-70 mph. 11/5 shape, slurve type. T2184, 2065 average rpm.
CH: 72-73 mph.  

Riley Iffrig, Edwardsville (IL), 2023. Indiana State commit.
Positional Profile: 1B/LHP
Body: 6-foot-2, 178-pounds. Strong-bodied frame.
Delivery: Tall and fall delivery, closed front side, works with proper direction, closed landing.
Arm Action: LH. High 3/4 arm slot, clean arm circle.
FB: T83, 80-83 mph. Slight arm side run. T2045, 1873 average rpm.
CB: 68-69 mph. Slurve-like, gradual action. T2040, 2040 average rpm.

Nicholas Lacson, Barrington (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: C/RHP
Body: 6-foot-1, 195-pounds. Proportionally strong frame, thick lower half.
Delivery: Hands rock over head to initiate delivery, drop/drive type, works in line to target and repeats. Intentful finish through release, throws with some effort.
Arm Action: RH. Longer arm circle with some poke on the backside, high 3/4 slot.

Jacob O'Day, Normal Community (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/3B Advanced athlete on the mound with an upside arsenal.
Body: 6-foot-2, 165-pounds. Lean, lanky levers, high-waisted frame.
Delivery: Twitchy uptempo delivery, some drop/drive action downhill. Whippy hip/shoulder separation at footstrike, works in line to target, upright finish through release. Throws with effort.
Arm Action: RH. Short and loose arm action, high 3/4 slot. Advanced arm speed for age.
FB: T85, 82-84 mph. Plays with natural arm-side action, averaged 13.6 inches of horizontal movement.  T2247, 2171 average rpm.
CB: 66-70 mph. 11/5 shape.  T2161, 2120 average rpm.
