Central Illinois Open: Pitcher Analysis

By Illinois Scouting Staff

On Aug. 8, we hosted the Central Illinois Open in Normal, Ill., at The Corn Crib. There were over 70 prospects in attendance representing the middle of the state, one of whom has already committed to play at the next level, and there’s bound to be more from this group in the coming weeks and months.

Today, we’ll continue our showcase analysis with a deeper look into the pitchers who took to the mound at the Normal event.

Junior RHP Holden Phelps (Prairie Ridge) has burst onto the scene after a strong summer, debuting on the latest edition of the state’s class of 2020 rankings, placing himself firmly within the top-40 prospects overall. His performance at the Central Illinois Open earned him an invite to All-State Games later that week where he validated his invitation by topping 90 mph. Phelps’ showing in Normal is one of the reasons why the Prairie Ridge ace is entrenched on the prospect scene.

There are a few underclassmen on the top 10 below, too, including Normal U-High’s MacCallan Conklin (2021). He’s a two-way prospect who looks especially interesting on the mound, where he has an early feel for all three of his pitches. His fastball lives in the low 80s and is mostly straight but is complemented deftly with his changeup.

We previously published our Statistical Analysis from the showcase, as well as a look at the day’s catchers, outfielders, and infieldersKeep on reading for full reports on all 45 pitchers from the Central Illinois Open below.
