Chicago Preseason I.D.: Blast Motion Board

By Andy Sroka
Illinois and Wisconsin Assistant Director

On Feb. 28, the PBR Illinois team hosted the third annual Chicago Preseason I.D. at the Pullman Community Center in Chicago, Ill. The event featured nearly 50 players from high school graduates from classes 2022-2025 across the Chicagoland area, including a handful of prospects from across the Indiana state line.

Previously, our staff collaborated to highlight the biggest takeaways and highlights from this showcase, and we published them within our Quick Hits piece. We also shared the event's traditional leaderboards, published inside this Statistical Analysis. Today, with the help of Blast Motion sensors, we're diving a little deeper into the data to see what we can find.

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

9 Grant Raber IL Moline 2023 69.0 mph
10 Ryan Kramer IL The Latin School of Chicago 2022 3B 68.8 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

ROTATIONAL ACCELERATION (PEAK & AVERAGE)

9 Christian Arenibar IL St. Laurence 2024 SS 23.1 g
10 Cody Barnes IL Whitney Young 2022 2B 21.6 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 John Wubben IL Galena 2023 C 25.4 g
2 Grant Raber IL Moline 2023 25.1 g
3 Jairus Harris IL Kankakee 2022 3B 24.7 g
4 Preston Lund IL Homewood-Flossmoor 2023 C 22.8 g
5 Donyae Smith IL Gwendolyn Brooks 2022 3B 21.9 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.

ON-PLANE EFFICIENCY PERCENTAGE

Rank Name State School Class Pos On Plane Eff (avg)
1 Ryan Kramer IL The Latin School of Chicago 2022 3B 92 %
2 Damorea Christmas IN Munster 2023 2B 89 %
3 Ian Burke IL Libertyville 2023 3B 87 %
4 Roberto Maldonado II IL Ogden International 2023 C 85 %
5 Alexander Cortes IL Warren 2022 SS 84 %
6 Jeremy Peddle IL St. Ignatius 2022 OF 83 %

9 Jairus Harris IL Kankakee 2022 3B 80 %
10 Kaleb Chatman IL Morgan Park 2021 OF 79 %

On-Plane Efficiency: This metric measures the percentage of your swing that the sweet spot of the bat is considered to be On Plane. The reference plane is defined at the moment of impact. The percentage of your swing On Plane is determined by the amount of speed generated within that reference plane.
