Class of 2016 Showcase Preview

By Ryan Quigley
Illinois Scouting Director

The Prep Baseball Report’s Class of 2016 Showcase will take place this Sunday October 19th at the Max in McCook, IL. The showcase is an open event for all current juniors in Illinois. Last year’s event included several 2015 prospects who ended up making Division-I commitments.

Plainfield South’s Shane Ritter impressed with a fastball up to 89 mph, and eventually committed to Iowa. Projectable left-hander Alex Weigand (Bradley Bourbonnais) impressed with one of best breaking balls in the class, and committed to Evansville.

Catchers Jesse Forestell (Homewood-Flossmoor) and Scott Kapers (Mount Carmel) both impressed with sub 2.0 second pop times, and committed to Western Michigan and Valparaiso respectively.

Shortstop Sam Flamini (Yorkville) impressed with his all-around play: 7.0 60-yard dash, 82 mph across the infield, 89 mph exit velocity, and eventually committed to Xavier.

South Elgin’s Tyler Hankins is a 6-foot-9 left-hander ranked No. 79 in Illinois’ 2016 class, and impressed back in August with a low 80’s fastball. Joliet Catholic catcher Dan Devine reeled off 1.91-2.01 pop times at June’s Top Prospect Showcase. Lincoln-Way North’s Tom Szczasny has impressed this summer at the hot corner and looks to be a top left-handed hitter in the 2016 class.

This Sunday’s event is sure to reveal prospects new to the Prep Baseball Report. In the upcoming weeks we will roll out in-depth position-by-position analysis, complete with verified statistics, scouting reports, and video of the event.
