Class of 2017 Showcase: Outfielder Analysis

Outfielders were the last position we analyzed and ranked for the Class of 2017 Showcase. Stephen Mogged took home the top spot flashing some eye-popping tools and athleticism. Mason Coon was not far behind with a smooth, flat, left-handed swing.

Here is a look at the top outfield prospects.

TOP outfielders

1) Stephen Mogged, OF, Lakes Community, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound, right-handed hitter with loads of athleticism. Ran a 6.67 60-time. Defensively, threw 88 mph from the outfield. Feet worked quick and fluid. Flashed ability to play through the ball. Long arm action, high ¾ slot with some accuracy and carry. Offensively, exit velocity clocked at 87 mph off of a tee. Starts from a balanced set up, smooth load back, short stride and above-average balance. Flashed bat speed combined with a long and level swing path.

2) Mason Coon, LHP/OF, St. Joseph-Ogden, 2017
6-foot-2, 185-pound left handed two-way player, strong lean build. Left-handed pitcher, delivery is athletic and repeatable, low leg lift, uses slide step from stretch. Arm action is easy, long and loose, ¾ slot. Fastball played with arm side run, 82-83 mph, touched 84 mph, showed feel for the strike zone. Curveball has 1/7 break, slurve type action, 70-71 mph, better from windup. Changeup has slight fading action, 72-73 mph. Left-handed hitter, wide setup, good lower half, good balance. Hits off of a firm front side, separates well. Good bat speed, line drive type hitter, flat path through the zone. 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively in the outfield showed clean average actions, arm played at 82 mph and ran a 7.16 in the 60.

3) David Chianelli, OF, Andrew, 2017
5-foot-7, 140-pound, small frame with some strength, right-handed hitter. Hits from a balanced set up, smooth load back, short stride, lower half can work, average balance. Fast bat speed, short bat path, 91 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed average hands, quick footwork. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, 79 mph from the outfield. Ran a 6.61 60-time.

4) Blake Carlson, LHP/OF, Ottawa, 2017
6-foot-0, 170-pound, projectable on the mound, two-way player, switch hitter. On the mound displayed a tall-and-fall delivery, long arm action, high ¾ arm slot, some rhythm, landing square in line. Fastball sat 81-83 mph, touched 84 mph. Curveball had 1/7 shape, gradual break, 67-71 mph. Changeup showed some sink, good arm speed, 72-75 mph. Defensively had average hands, fluid footwork, ability to play through the baseball. Long arm action, high ¾ slot, some accuracy, 83 mph from the outfield. Hits from a slightly open stance, smooth load, short stride, good balance. Above-average bat speed, short, level bat path, line-drive-approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Ran a 7.24 60-time.

5) Dominic Connolly, 2B/OF, Lemont, 2017
5-foot-7, 145-pound athletic second baseman/outfielder. Defensively the right-hander has short loose arm action from over-the-top slot, accurate, and has carry on ball. Showed soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, plays thru and is athletic in the field. Threw 85 mph from outfield and 82 mph across infield. Offensively hits from right side with athletic and balanced setup, smooth load, short stride, ok lower half, and good balance. Showed quick bat speed, good approach, short level path, line drive type, and fluid rhythm. Exit velo 78 mph. Ran 7.14 60.

5) Keegan Bridges, RHP/OF, Bloomington Central Catholic, 2017
6-foot-0, 160-pound, lanky build, two-way player, right-handed hitter. On the mound showed short arm action, high ¾ slot, smooth rhythm, landing square, athletic finish. Fastball showed arm-side-run, thrown for strikes, sat 81-82 mph. Curveball showed 12/6 shape, late action, 69-70 mph. Changeup showed slight arm-side-fade, 66-68 mph. Defensively in the outfield showed average hands, quick feet, short arm action, high ¾ slot, some accuracy, 81 mph from the outfield. On the infield had fluid footwork, short arm action, ¾ slot, 77 mph across the infield. Ran a 6.94 60-time.

Matthew Barnes, OF/2B, Central Catholic, 2017
5-foot-10, 145-pound outfielder/second baseman. Defensively the right-hander has long arm action in the outfield and short in the infield, high ¾, some accuracy, and average strength. Displayed average hands, clean exchange, and plays thru. Threw 83 mph from outfield and 78 mph across infield. Offensively hits from right side with tall and balanced setup, no load, long leg kick, and average strength. Showed average bat speed, long uphill path, and line drive/pull type. Exit velo 80 mph. Ran 7.11 60.

Trevor Davis, OF/RHP, Morton, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound, some length, two-way player, left-handed hitter runs a 6.98 60 yard dash. Hits from a balanced stance, short stride, lower half partially works, average balance. Average bat speed, uphill bat path, pull-side approach and an 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, showed long arm action, over-the-top arm slot, 79 mph from the outfield. On the mound showed long arm action, over-the-top arm slot, landing slightly closed. Fastball sowed some cut, sat 77-78 mph. Curveball had 12/6 shape, gradual shape, 63-66 mph. Changeup sat 66-71 mph.

Ben Fitzgerald, OF/RHP, Grayslake Central, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound, lean, athletic build, two-way player, right-handed hitter. Hits from an open stance, loads back, leg kick, average balance. Average bat speed, long, uphill bat path, gap-to-gap approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Defensively displayed average hands, clean exchange, plays through the ball. Short arm action, over-the-top slot, with accuracy, 85 mph from the outfield. Ran a 7.37 60-time. On the mound showed a tall-and-fall delivery, short arm action, over-the-top slot, some rhythm, landing square, athletic finish. Fastball showed some sink, 77-78 mph, touched 79 mph. Curveball had 12/6 shape, some feel for the pitch, 63-66 mph, Changeup showed arm-side-fade, thrown for strikes, 67-69 mph.

Brian Heidbreder, OF, Lake Forest, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound, thin build with length, right-handed hitter. Hits from tall, open stance, loads back, lower half can work, above-average balance. Above-average bat speed, short, level bat path, fluid rhythm, 86 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed average hands, long arm action, high ¾ slot, 77 mph from the outfield. Ran a 7.15 60-time.

Matthew Huizinga, OF, Batavia, 2017
6-foot-0, 170-pound, strong build, right-handed hitter. Hits from a tall, narrow set up, short stride, average balance. Average bat speed, short bat path, 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed average hands, high ¾ arm slot, 73 mph across the infield. Ran 7.03 60-time.

Nicholas Kortemeier, OF, Winnebago, 2017
5-foot-9, 175-pound outfielder. Defensively the right-hander has long arm action from over-the-top, some accuracy, and average strength. Showed average hands, fluid footwork, and plays thru. Threw 79 mph from outfield. Offensively hits from left side with balanced and open setup, no load, short stride, and average balance. Showed average bat speed, long path, and gap-to-gap type. Exit velo 85 mph. Ran 6.93 60.

Daniel Marks, OF, Libertyville, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound, average build, some length, right-handed hitter. Hits from a wide set up, loads back, leg kick, average balance. Average bat speed, long, uphill bat path, 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively displayed average hands, short arm action, high ¾ slot, some accuracy, 80 mph from the outfield. Ran a 6.97 60-time.

Zachary Pell, OF/C, Providence Catholic, 2017
6-foot, 185-pound catcher/outfielder, solid build, thick lower half. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, minimal lower half involvement. Path is flatter with some length, 80 mph exit velocity from the tee. Ran a 7.61 in the 60. Defensively arm slot plays over the top, short arm action, played at 73 mph from the outfield, 65 mph from the crouch. Posted pop times at 2.29-2.35.

Connor Peplow, RHP/OF, Plainfield North, 2017
6-foot-1, 155-pound, lanky build, two-way player, right-handed hitter. On the mound showed a tall-and-fall delivery, short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, smooth rhythm, landing square. Fastball showed good life, arm-side-run, 86-88 mph. Curveball had 10/4 shape, sweeping action, 67-69 mph. Slider had sharp late break, 72-74 mph. Changeup showed some arm-side-fade, 76-80 mph. Defensively displayed average hands, quick, fluid footwork, clean exchange, plays through the ball. Short arm action, high ¾ arm action, with accuracy, 87 from the outfield. Hits from a crouched stance, short stride, average balance. Average bat speed, level bat path, line-drive approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Ran a 7.12 60-time.

Kennedy Price, OF, Crete-Monee, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound, lanky build, two-way player, right-handed hitter. Defensively showed average hands, long exchange, long arm action, high ¾ slot, some accuracy, 76 mph from the outfield. Hits from a tall set up, loads down, slight leg kick, average balance. Long, uphill bat path, 79 mph exit velocity. Ran a 7.16 60-time.

Brennan Reback, OF, Vernon Hills, 2017
5-foot-10, 160-pound outfielder. Defensively the left-hander has short loose arm action, high ¾, some accuracy, average hands and average strength. Threw 77 mph from outfield. Offensively hits from left side with tall and balanced setup, smooth load back, long toe-tap, and average balance. Showed average bat speed, good approach, long uphill path, and line drive type. Exit velo 84 mph. Ran 6.91 60.

Noel Rodriguez, OF, Lincoln Park, 2017
5-foot-6, 125-pound outfielder. Offensively hits from right side with wide balanced setup, loads back, toe lift, average balance, long level path, and pull type. Exit velo 78 mph. Defensively the right hander has short arm action from over-the-top, some accuracy, and average strength. Showed average hands, quick fluid footwork, clean exchange, and plays thru. Threw 76 mph from outfield. Ran 6.76 60.

Bryan Truitt, OF, Rockford Christian, 2017
6-foot-2, 160-pound lanky, athletic, projectable build right-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively, starts from an open, tall setup and short stride. Pre-pitch rhythm and maintains rhythm and balance through contact. Recorded an exit velocity of 80 mph off of a tee. Defensively, throws from a high ¾ arm slot, long arm action. Clocked at 78 mph from the outfield. Also, ran a 7.32 60 yard dash.

Connor Yukna, OF/3B, Waubonsie Valley, 2017
6-foot-0, 180-pound, lean, lanky build, right-handed hitter, projects more as an outfielder. Hits from a wide set up, short stride, average balance. Above-average bat speed, long, uphill bat path, line-drive approach, 86 mph exit velocity. In the outfield showed average hands, fluid footwork, plays through the ball. Short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, with accuracy, 86 mph from the outfield. On the infield showed a clean exchange, low ¾ arm slot, 78 mph across the infield. Ran a 6.97 60-time.
