Class of 2018 Showcase: Outfield Analysis

The Class of 2018 Showcase took place at the Max in McCook, IL on Sunday, October 16, 2016. The open event featured close to 100 uncommitted junior’s.

Following the event the PBR scouting staff compiled all of the notes from the workout and over the next week we will break down the event position by position. Yesterday we began the analysis looking at the catchers in attendance. Today we roll-out the outfielders in attendance.

TOP OUTFIELD PROSPECTS

1. Francois Castillo, OF/INF, Roberto Clemente, 2018
6-foot, 210-pound, solid lower half, strong multi-positional prospect. Defensively, worked out in the infield and outfield, continues to impress with his arm strength and athletic actions. Throws are accurate, have life, carry and clocked at 91 mph from both positions. Fields the ball out front, soft, receptive hands, smooth transfer with length. Offensively, right-handed hitter, flashed bat speed and pull power; advanced, gap-to-gap approach and fluid rhythm throughout. Exit velocity clocked at 81 mph. Also, ran a 7.21 laser-timed 60.

2. Cameron Robinson, OF/RHP, Champaign Central, 2018
6-foot-4, 180-pound, long, lean and projectable two-way prospect. First time we have seen him on the mound. Right-handed pitcher with a loose, quick arm out of a high ¾ slot. Smooth delivery, stays on-line, lands closed, finishes athletically with regular effort throughout. Fastball works straight and clocked at 80-82 mph. Curveball, maintains arm speed, 1/7 shape and sat 65-67 mph. Changeup looks to be his best out pitch, fastball arm speed and sinking action, 71-72 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, loose, whippy hands, fluid rhythm and bat speed; 87 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced, open setup, leg-lift timing trigger and good balance throughout. Defensively, plays through the baseball, fluid footwork, tall transfer and throws flashed carry; clocked at 84 mph. Ran a 7.30 laser-timed 60.

3. Tommy Nelsen, OF, St. Charles North, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound, athletic, strong, right-handed hitting outfielder. Ran a 6.85 laser-timed 60. Offensively, bat speed and strength through contact; 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced, slightly open setup, short stride and short path through the zone. Defensively, plays through the baseball, to the side at times and reliable hands. Long arm from a high ¾ slot, accurate throws with carry, clocked at 84 mph.

4. Steven Hamer, LHP/OF, St. Charles North, 2018
5-foot-10, 155-pound, athletic, two-way prospect. On the mound, left handed pitcher, drop and drive delivery, smooth rhythm, stays in line, lands square. Quick arm from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, arm side run, sat 82-83 mph. Curveball, feel, 1/7 shape, sharp action, 72-75 mph. Changeup, thrown for strikes, maintains arm speed, 75-76 mph. Offensively, left-handed hitter, line drive approach, short path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 82 mph. Tall, open setup, reverse toe tap, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, reliable hands, plays through the baseball. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 85 mph. 6.98 runner in the laser timed 60.

5. Trey Torain, OF, Loyola, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound, athletically built, right-handed hitting outfielder with room for continued physical development. Ran a 6.79 laser-timed 60. Offensively, bat speed, looseness and a gap-to-gap approach at the plate. Open, taller setup, uphill path and good balance throughout. 87 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, steady hands in the outfield. Arm works short and over-the-top and throws clocked at 82 mph.

6. Brandon Simon, OF, Gwendolyn Brooks, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound, strong, athletic outfielder. Offensively, right-handed hitter, present bat speed, fluid rhythm, slightly uphill path through the zone, gets extension; exit velocity registered at 95 mph. Slightly open setup, smooth load, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, fluid footwork, plays through the ball, hands work well. Long arm action from an over the top slot, flashed accuracy; throws clocked at 84 mph. 7.05 runner in the laser timed 60.

7. Jack Rigoni, OF, Neuqua Valley, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder with proportional strength. Started the day off running a 6.90 laser-timed 60. Offensively, flashed bat speed and quick twitch in swing; 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Open setup, low hand set, stride gets back to even and uphill path through the hitting zone. Defensively, quick feet and plays through the baseball in the outfield. Short, over-the-top arm action, accurate throws with carry and clocked at 86 mph.

8. Ryan Lee, OF, Lake Forest, 2018
5-foot-11, 155-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively, present bat speed, gets extension, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 88 mph. Open setup with a leg kick timing trigger. Defensively, quick footwork, clean exchange, reliable hands. Long arm action from an over the top to high ¾ slot, flashed accuracy; throws clocked at 84 mph from the outfield. 7.02 runner in the laser timed 60.

9. Brennen Van Breusegen, OF, Columbia, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound, athletically built, right-handed hitting outfielder. Ran a 7.12 laser-timed 60. Offensively, bat stays flat through the zone and gets occasional extension; line-drive approach and an 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, short stride and good balance throughout. Defensively, aggressive routes and plays through the baseball. Arm works short, loose and out of a high ¾ slot; accurate throws with carry and clocked at 84 mph from the outfield.

10. Dalton Crowder, OF, Plainfield East, 2018
6-foot-1, 165-pound, lanky, athletic outfielder. Offensively, left-handed hitter, looseness in swing, pull-side approach, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 85 mph. Slightly open setup with a leg lift trigger. Defensively, long arm action from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 80 mph. 7.51 runner in the laser timed 60.

Joseph Atkins, LHP/OF, Fenwick, 2018
5-foot-9, 145-pound, two-way prospect. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, left-handed pitcher, lands closed. Long arm action from a ¾ slot. Fastball, works mostly straight, sat 74-76 mph. Curveball, slurve action, 63-65 mph. Changeup, 65-68 mph. Offensively, left-handed hitter, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 78 mph. Balanced setup, reverse toe tap trigger. Defensively, short arm action from a high ¾ to ¾ slot; throws clocked at 74 mph. 7.82 runner in the laser timed 60.

David Bartok, OF, Deerfield, 2018
5-foot-10, 165-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively, pull-side approach, short path through the zone; 77 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup with a short stride. Defensively, clean exchange, reliable hands. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 75 mph from the outfield. 7.90 runner in the laser timed 60.

Kendall Bonner, OF/INF, Morgan Park, 2018
6-foot, 190-pound, strong, multi-positional prospect. Offensively, present bat speed, gap-to-gap approach, fluid rhythm, uphill path; 83 mph exit velocity. Wide setup, ability to maintain balance through contact. Defensively, worked out in the infield and outfield. Similar actions at both positions. Long arm action from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 78 mph from the outfield and 81 mph across the diamond. 7.46 runner in the laser timed 60.

Anthony DeConcilis, INF/OF, Lake Park, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound, right-handed hitting multi-positional prospect. Ran a 7.16 laser-timed 60. Worked out on the infield and in the outfield. Defensively, more natural on the infield; easy body control, steady hands, flashes athletic actions and a clean, quick release. Ability to throw from multiple angles and make plays on the move; clocked at 83 mph across the infield and 84 mph from the outfield. Offensively, simple swing, minimal pre-pitch movement, balanced setup, smooth load and leg-kick timing trigger. Registered an exit velocity of 82 mph.

Hunter De La Rosa, RHP/OF, Moline, 2018
5-foot-8, 150-pound, two-way player. On the mound, right handed pitcher, throws strikes. Tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm, toe lands closed. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, thrown for strikes, mostly straight, sat 74-76 mph. Slider, 10/4 shape, 69-70 mph. Changeup, slight sink action, 68-69 mph. Offensively, long, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity clocked at 81 mph. Balanced setup, short stride, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, fluid footwork, clean exchange, plays through the baseball. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 79 mph. 7.35 runner in the laser timed 60.

Andrew DeMatteo, OF, Sandburg, 2018
5-foot-11, 150-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively, present bat speed, fluid rhythm, line drive approach, short, level path through the zone, gets extension; exit velocity registered at 83 mph. Open setup, smooth load, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, clean exchange, plays through the ball at times, crow hop. Long, accurate arm from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 75 mph from the outfield. 7.14 runner in the laser timed 60.

Jack Donnelly, OF, Peoria Notre Dame, 2018
6-foot-2, 160-pound, lean, athletically framed, right-handed hitting outfielder. Ran a 7.13 laser-timed 60. Offensively, short path through the hitting zone. Balanced setup, leg-kick timing trigger and average balance through contact. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, flashed easy, loose actions and steady hands. Arm works short and over-the-top, clocked at 81 mph.

Evan Friedman, RHP/OF, Maine South, 2018
6-foot-3, 198-pound, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, short arm action from an over the top angle. Fastball, works mostly straight, sat 74-76 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 65-67 mph. Changeup, thrown for strikes, 67-71 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, long path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 84 mph. Balanced setup with a short stride. Defensively, reliable hands, plays through the baseball. Short arm action from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 79 mph from the outfield. 7.65 runner in the laser timed 60.

Jake Garvey, RHP/OF, Neuqua Valley, 2018
5-foot-10, 145-pound, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, stays in line, falls off to the first base side. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, mostly straight, sat 67-68 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 56-58 mph. Changeup, mostly straight, 61-63 mph. Offensively, balanced setup with a short stride. Long path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 76 mph from the tee. Defensively, long arm action from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 73 mph. 7.59 runner in the laser timed 60.

Garrett Gillund, OF/RHP, McHenry West, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound, athletic, two-way player. Offensively, right-handed hitter, average bat speed, uphill path through the zone; 84 mph exit velocity. Wide, open setup, short stride. Defensively, worked out in the infield and outfield. Similar actions at both positions. Short arm action from a ¾ slot; throws clocked at 83 mph from the outfield and 79 mph across the diamond. 7.73 runner in the laser timed 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, works across body, toe lands open. Long, loose arm action from a ¾ angle. Featured a four-seam and two-seam fastball. Two-seam looks to be more effective; thrown for strikes, arm-side-run and sat 79-80 mph. Four-seam works mostly straight, sat 77-79 mph. Curveball, thrown for strikes, 10/4 shape, 70-72 mph. Changeup, 73-75 mph.

AJ Golembiewski, RHP/OF, Marian Central Catholic, 2018
6-foot-4, 175-pound, lanky, two-way prospect. On the mound, right-handed pitcher with projectability, stays in line, lands square. Long, loose arm action from a high ¾ angle. Fastball, thrown for strikes, slight arm side run, sat 79-82 mph. Slider, 11/5 shape, 66-68 mph. Changeup, feel, maintains arm speed, sink action, 71-73 mph. Offensively, short, uphill path through the zone, average bat speed; 81 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup with a reverse toe tap trigger. Defensively, clean exchange, reliable hands in the outfield. Short, accurate arm from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 83 mph from the outfield. 7.49 runner in the laser timed 60.

Jacob Gray, RHP/OF, West Aurora, 2018
5-foot-11, 145-pound, lanky, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, stays in line, lands open. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, thrown for strikes, works mostly straight, sat 74-75 mph. Curveball, 11/5  shape, 64-65 mph. Changeup, 65-68 mph. Defensively, clean exchange, plays through the baseball, reliable hands. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 78 mph from the outfield. Offensively, balanced setup, heel lift, long path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 74 mph from a tee. 7.87 runner in the laser timed 60.

Gabriel Griffin, OF/3B, Lockport Township, 2018
6-foot-1, 170-pound, athletic, multi-positional player. Offensively, fluid rhythm, pull approach, average bat speed, uphill path through the zone; 84 mph exit velocity. Crouched, open setup with a leg kick. Defensively, worked out in the outfield and infield. Feet work, clean exchange, long arm action from an over the top slot, high ¾ in the infield; throws clocked at 74 mph from the outfield and 68 mph across the diamond. 7.32 runner in the laser timed 60.

Henry Haracz, OF/RHP, Loyola Academy, 2018
6-foot-1,165-pound, lanky, two-way prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter, gap-to-gap approach, short path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 86 mph. Slightly closed setup, short stride, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, reliable hands, plays through the ball. Short arm action from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 83 mph from the outfield. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, drop and drive delivery, works with rhythm, finishes athletically. Short arm action from a high ¾ angle. Fastball, works mostly straight, sat 81-82 mph. Curveball, 67-69 mph. Changeup, feel, maintains arm speed, sink action, 69-72 mph.

Jeremy Heer, RHP/OF, Riverside-Brookfield, 2018
5-foot-9, 175-pound, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, drop and drive delivery, works with rhythm. Short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, works mostly straight, sat 70-72 mph. Curveball, 62-65 mph. Changeup, 63-67 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, long, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 73 mph. Defensively, long arm action from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 75 mph. 7.67 runner in the laser timed 60.

Freddie March, C/OF, Lake Park, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting C/OF. At the plate hits from a wide base with a balanced setup. Long, leg kick stride. Pull hitter with fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.82. Defensively took drills in the outfield and behind the plate. Behind the plate has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Gains ground toward second base on throws. Popped 2.33-2.44 and threw 70 mph from the crouch. Threw 72 mph from the outfield.

Coliani Martinez, INF/OF, Holy Trinity, 2018
5-foot-10, 190-pound, multi-positional prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter, pre-pitch hand waggle, exaggerated hand load and leg-kick timing trigger. Pull approach and level path through the zone; 89 mph exit velocity. Defensively, worked out in the outfield and infield. More comfortable in the infield. Hands work steady and out in front. Short arm from an over-the-top slot; clocked at 78 mph across the infield and 81 mph from the outfield. Also ran a 8.09 60.

Vincent Massaglia, INF/OF, Morton, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound, right-handed hitting multi-positional prospect. Offensively, bat speed, fluid rhythm, uses the middle of the field and some looseness throughout; 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, quick leg-kick timing trigger and path works uphill at times. Defensively, worked out in the outfield and infield. Ability to play both positions. Hands work soft, fluid footwork with body control and flashes actions. Short, over-the-top arm action clocked at 82 mph across the infield and 84 mph from the outfield. Ran a 7.39 laser-timed 60. Also, a right-handed pitcher. Tall and fall delivery works with rhythm, stays on-line, lands closed and finishes athletically. Short, quick, loose arm from a high ¾ slot and regular effort throughout. Fastball, tilt, straight and sat 80-82 mph. Curveball, feel, sharp, late action action, 12/6 shape with depth and clocked at 69-70 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, fade action and sat 73-75 mph.

Noah Miller, OF, St. Laurence, 2018
5-foot-10 150-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively, fluid rhythm, pull-side approach, long path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 82 mph. Open setup, leg kick, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, clean exchange, reliable hands, plays through the baseball. Short arm action from an over the top slot, flashed accuracy; throws clocked at 82 mph from the outfield. 7.19 runner in the laser timed 60.

Matt Piento, LHP/OF, Lyons Township, 2018
6-foot, 160-pound, lean, athletically built, two-way prospect. Left-handed pitcher, delivery works with rhythm, slightly across body, hides ball, creating deception and easy effort throughout. Arm works short and from a ¾ slot. Fastball sat 79-81 mph, touching 82. Curveball, flashed sharp, late action, 1/7 shape and ranged between 70-73 mph. Changeup maintains arm speed, flashed sinking action and feel, 75-77 mph. Offensively, balanced setup, short stride and average balance; exit velocity clocked at 72 mph. Defensively, quick feet in the outfield. Short arm from and over-the-top to high ¾ slot and throws clocked at 80 mph. Also, ran a 7.22 laser-timed 60.

Payton Reynolds, OF, Elgin, 2018
5-foot-10, 156-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively, balanced setup, short knee knock stride, long path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 68 mph. Defensively, long arm action from a low ¾ slot; throws clocked at 74 mph from the outfield. 7.59 runner in the laser timed 60.

Isaac Weber, OF/2B, Morton, 2018
5-foot-9, 150-pound, multi-positional player. Offensively, right-handed hitter, wide setup, average bat speed, long path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 72 mph. Defensively, worked out in the outfield and infield. Looks more natural in the outfield. Feet worked quick, clean exchange, plays through the ball. Long arm action from an over the top slot, flashed accuracy; throws clocked at 78 mph from the outfield, 72 mph across the infield. 7.08 runner in the laser timed 60.

Cannon Whitby, OF/SS, Hinsdale Central, 2018
5-foot-9, 155-pound, right-handed hitting shortstop. 6.93 runner in the laser timed 60. Offensively, present bat speed, line drive approach, slightly uphill path; exit velocity registered at 83 mph. Open setup with a leg kick timing trigger. Defensively, reliable hands, tendency to field deep. Similar actions on the infield. Short arm action from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 82 mph from the outfield and 80 mph from the infield.
