WESTCHESTER, IL – De La Salle moved into first-place tie in the Chicago Catholic White Division by defeating host St. Joseph, 4-1, on Tuesday.

The Meteors (13-10, 9-6) took control of the game by scoring two runs in the third inning, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage. Junior right-hander Ivan Guzman (3-0) took care of the rest, as he limited St. Joseph (10-8, 8-6) to five hits in six innings work.

Freshman second baseman Tom Duddleston tied the game at 1-1 when he smoked a double to centerfield, scoring Michael Poluha in the third inning. Duddleston quickly scored on Tony Valdez’s single.

Junior left-handed hitting catcher Glenn Kubek led De La Salle’s offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, a run-scoring single in the fifth and a walk. Kubek also threw out two runners, including an athletic play in which he blocked a ball, popped up and gunned a runner at third base to end a sixth-inning rally.

Ricardo Ramirez, a UIC recruit who’s one of the top players in the 2013 class, went 1-for-3 with a walk and a long fly out to center field. He also pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Valdez, a senior shortstop, added two hits, an RBI and scored a run.

Senior outfielder Patrick Brown drove in St. Joseph’s lone run with a single in the second inning.
