Draft League Spotlight: Branden Comia

Player: Branden Comia
Position: SS
School: Illinois

During the 2020 shortened season, Comia was the only underclass shortstop in the nation to hit .400+ with an OPS of 1.200+. He was 3rd in the Big Ten in OBP (.526), 5th in slugging (.702) and 5th in batting average (.426). With plenty of instincts and intangibles, he also has the tools to be considered a top 10 round prospect. At 5-foot-10, 195 pounds there is ample strength and bat speed. He has quick hands, a balanced approach and sees the ball well. At times, Comia will take big swings, chasing pitches out of the zone and could better take what the pitcher gives him, drawing some walks in the process. Overall, he simply just needs to iron out his consistency at the plate. With adequate hands and solid defensive actions, Comia is a more than capable defender. He reads hops well and has a good internal clock. His lateral quickness and good instincts allow him to have average-to-better fielding range at shortstop. Clocked at 4.65 on a turn, he’s an average runner underway, but below average down the line.
