The Prep Baseball Report Prospect ID Showcase on June 20th at Edwardsville HS featured prospects from Illinois and Misouri. There were many players who emerged as prospects to pay close attention to, and we will for sure be following them through the summer and into next season.

Here, we list the top 10 prospects at the event. In the coming days, we will have complete write-ups of all the participants.

A look at the top 10 prospects:

1. Drew Curtis, Edwardsville HS, Class of 2013
Curtis is a very projectable 6-foot-5, 190-pound two way player who impressed in all facets of the game, garnering top prospect honors. In the outfield, Curtis moves with purpose to the ball with great body control, staying behind the ball and keeping is momentum toward his target, with accurate and throws (87 mph). At 1B, Curtis moves well around the bag, with good footwork, soft hands, and use his tall frame to stretch and catch balls thrown over his head and pick the low throws. At the plate, Curtis has a powerful swing that consistently squared up the ball produced hard line drives gap to gap. Curtis also impressed on the mound with the ability to throw four pitches fro strikes. Curtis had one of the top fastballs, topping at 86 mph with late arm side run. With his breaking pitches, Curtis’ curveball was 66-67 with sharp, late movement and his 72-73 mph slider showed hard, late two-plane break. He is showed feel for a 73-76 mph change up with some depth. Curtis is a versatile player who should be one of the top two way players in the Metro-East region.

 

2. Jacob Haberer, Highland HS, Class of 2013:
Haberer is an athletic six-foot-1, 185-pound RHP/SS who showed all around athleticism in his game. On the mound, Haberer has good rhythm and a live arm. Coming from a high ¾ arm slot, Haberer throws a heavy fastball that sat 85-85 mph, topping out at an event best 87 mph and was consistently down in the strike zone. His breaking ball (66-67 mph) has an 11-to-5 shape with near fastball arm speed and looks to be a tough pitch on right hand hitters, with the pitch breaking over the inside part of the plate. He also flashed a 75-77 mph change up with fastball arm speed and arm side movement. Haberer also impressed in the field, showing quick feet and defensive actions, along with solid carry across the infield (84 mph). At the plate, Haberer hits with a balanced setup and little movement. His swing is extremely quick and compact, as barreled up the ball driving it hard to all fields.

 

3. Clayton Luley, Francis Howell Central, Class of 2013:
The projectable 6-foot-1, 210-pounds, the right handed pitching Luley has strong legs, and demonstrated rhythm and fluidity on the mound. The right-hander operates from a high ¾ arm slot and has a quick, loose arm action with fastball arm speed on all pitches and repeatable mechanics.  He showcased a fastball that topped out at 86 mph that was thrown with little effort.  His curveball showed some depth in the 68-69mph range with 12-to-6 shape, and changeup in the 77-79 mph range that displayed sink when down in the zone.

 

4. Mike Ringer, Springfield Southeast HS, Class of 2013:
Ringer is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound two way player who showed well both as a position player and on the mound. As a position player, he displayed natural instincts in the field and showed a velocity of 85 mph across the diamond with real quick arm action.  Offensively, Ringer features a long swing with barrel whip through the zone and created backspin carry when he squared the ball up.  On the mound, Ringer has a high ¾ arm slot and showed good hand acceleration.  His heavy fastball sat at 84-85 mph, topping out at 86.  Ringer’s breaking ball had an 11-to-5 shape (68-71 mph) with sharp break and good arm speed and showed potential to be an out pitch. His changeup was 78-81 mph.

 

5. Jake Burger, CBC, Class of 2014:
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Burger is a strong and sturdy player who showed ability and versatility in the outfield and at 3B.  Burger exhibited a strong arm (83 mph) that had carry and was on target. He moves with fluidity and purpose to the ball, and his natural instincts and hands further separated him from the pack. Burger showed reliable hands at third base and threw 81 mph from across the diamond.  At the plate with his size and lower-half explosion, the ball really jumps off his bat with excellent carry and loft with pull side power. Burger also showed some athleticism running a 7.09 60.

 

6. Brad Henry, Alton HS, Class of 2013:
With a projectable 6-foot-4, 175-pound frame, Henry showed feel for all three of his pitches.  He operates from a mid ¾ arm slot with a long loose arm and a long stride off the mound.  Henry’s heavy fastball topped at 84 mph with some arm-side run and sink. He also showed two off-speed pitches, a gradual curveball with 1-to-7 shape that sat in the 70-71 mph range and a sinking changeup in the 75-77 mph range. With his frame, look for a spike in velocity in Henry’s pitches are his body continues to fill out.

 

7. Nick Oliff, Lafayette HS, Class of 2014:
Oliff has a lanky 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame that projects well at the next level. Oliff showed the strongest arm from the infield, posting a velocity of 87 mph.  His fluid footwork and reliable hands make him a top-level infield prospect.  Offensively, Oliff has good rhythm with a short stride and economical path to the ball. He generates barrel whip and swing looseness, resulted in gap-to-gap power to both alleys. Oliff is one of the more intriguing Class of 2014 prospects.

 

8. Nate Green, Francis Howell, Class of 2013:
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound loose right-hander Green impressed with his lively fastball, which topped at 85 mph, and sat in 83-84 range with late arm side run and sink. He comes from a high ¾ arm slot and displayed rhythm and tempo throughout his mechanics. His arm works fast and he showed excellent hand acceleration. Green also displayed a gradual two-plane breaking ball that what was consistently thrown for a strike. He also showed feel for a changeup that demonstrated some sink at 71-73 mph.

 

9. Zeke Rowe, Jackosnville HS, Class of 2013:
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound two way player showed to be one of the top overall prospects of the event. Rowe had to top 60 time at 6.67, which translated to getting to the ball quickly in the outfield and getting in proper position to keep his momentum toward his targets. His throws (83 mph) were accurate and had some carry. Offensively, Rowe has a level swing capable of producing line drives. On the mound, Rowe showed more control out of the stretch, with a heavy 79-81 mph (topping at 82 mph) and a late moving 12-to-6 breaking ball with fastball arm speed.

 

10. Dalton Schumer, Lutheran South, Class of 2013:
Schumer s a solidly built 6-foot, 172-pound talent who showed natural instincts as a middle infielder.  He showed a good approach to the ball with fluid footwork and a quick clean exchange, in addition to accurate, strong throws across the infield (82 mph).  Offensively, he has a balanced setup, a short stride, and showed a repeatable, easy swing with the ability to drive the ball with some power.
