LIBERTYVILLE, IL - Valparaiso commit RHP Colin Fields tossed seven shutout innings, and the Wildcat offense capitalized on Lake Zurich defensive errors, to defeat the Bears 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

The first two innings cruised by uneventfully as Lake Zurich starting pitch, sophomore Noah Deluga and Fields both ran their fastballs up to 89 mph, making quick work of the opposition’s offense. It was not until the third inning that Libertyville found a crack in Deluga. C Luke Plunkett, a Luther College commit, drove in two runs with a single, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

Fields made quick work of the Lake Zurich offense and Libertyville were right back at the plate. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-0.  Tommy Rigali, Andrew Kim, an Illinois commit, and Plunkett were all responsible for an RBI.

Riding the momentum of his offense, Fields finished the game strong. The senior right-hander got the first two batters of the inning to groundout and then finished it himself, striking out the final batter. Fields finished with a line of: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 SO, 1 BB. Offensively, Heartland commit Tim Jean went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Plunkett finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Lake Zurich’s only hit of the game was recorded by Iowa commit, Anthony Mangano, who finished 1-for-3. Deluga picked up the loss, throwing four and a third innings, surrendering six runs, five earned, on six hits, striking out five and walking three.
