Future Games: Team Illinois Game One Recap

Team Illinois matched up against Team Indiana at 10:15 AM on Thursday, the first day of game play at the 2021 PBR Future Games. Team Indiana rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to come away with a 6-4 win.

Illinois jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after SS Jaden Correa (De La Salle, 2023) barreled a two-run home run to deep left-center field. The home run scored Kaden Griffitts (Williamsville, 2023), who led off with a double down the left-field line (doubled to left-center field in his second at-bat as well). Correa also made a number of athletic, body control plays early in the game while at shortstop.

Illinois tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead at the time. OF William Hill (Brooks, 2023) led off with a walk and left-handed hitting OF Brayden Bakes (Huntley, 2023) followed with a line-drive down the left field line for an RBI double. Bakes ended up coming around to third on a misplay in the outfield. INF Cal Sefcik (Marist, 2023) followed with a sacrifice fly to right-center field, giving Team Illinois their fourth and final run of the game. Sefcik was a standout with the bat yesterday during workouts, consistently making hard, loud contact to the pull-side, as well as topping at 90 mph across the infield.

On the mound, seven arms through an inning a piece for Team Illinois. RHP Adam Behrens (Warren, 2023) started things off with a clean, scoreless first inning. Behrens did what we have become accustomed to seeing; threw quality strikes with his fastball that sat 82-85 mph, missed barrels and showed three pitches for strikes.

Another standout on the mound was LHP Tore Indomenico (St. Ignatius, 2023). Indomenico showed a loose, whippy arm from ¾ slot and ran his fastball up to 88 mph, sitting 86-87. Indomenico also tunnelled his 68 mph sweeping breaking ball off his fastball and flashed a changeup for a strikeout with plus action. Indomenico went three-up-three-down with one strikeout in his inning of work.

RHP Andrew Ressler (Huntley, 2023) wasn’t as sharp with his fastball command as we have seen in the past but he showed potential high-end stuff. Ressler touched 88 mph with the fastball with 2564 rpm and his breaking ball has advanced spin metrics climbing as high as 2800 rpm with 10/4 shape at 71-74 mph.

RHP Ryan Geraghty (Carmel Catholic, 2023) ran his fastball up to 91 mph, the firmest of the day out of an Illinois arm.

Catcher Colin Barczi (Naperville Central, 2023) took some of the best at-bats of the day, swinging with controlled aggression and showing some of the best bat speed and physicality for Team Illinois. Barczi finished 1-for-1 with a walk.

Team Illinois will play again on Friday at 10:15 AM against Team Wisconsin in the middle game of the three-game event.
