GPA Games: Preview

For the third straight year, PBR Illinois will host the GPA Games at Lee Pfund Stadium at Wheaton College. This one-of-a-kind showcase is targeted for 2019 and 2020 prospects looking to leverage their skills on the diamond and in the classroom into opportunities to play ball at the next level. Taking the field on Sunday will be prospects not only from Illinois, but from Wisconsin, Indiana, and Missouri.

Peeking back at last year’s event, 18 of the attendees are committed to play at the next level – that group was predominantly made up of 2018s, highlighting how important this event can be for incoming seniors. Naperville North’s LHP Mark McCabe (2018) is preparing for his first season at the University of Illinois-Chicago while RHP A.J. Golembiewski (Marian Central Catholic, 2018) is doing the same at Illinois-Springfield.

This year, there are a few 2019s heading to Carol Stream who may not be labeled as uncommitted for long. From Wisconsin, RHP Trent Turzenski (Burlington) has been gaining steam within his state’s class rankings and recently moved up seven spots for a spot in the top 30. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound righty gets on top of his fastball and works downhill, sitting in the 82-85 mph range, but has been up to 87 mph in the past. He’s shown positive development in his secondary offerings, too, leading to some real upside on the mound, given his frame and present arsenal.

Illinois will have plenty of prospects to keep an eye on come Sunday. Among them are C Clay Billadeau (Metea Valley, 2019), 3B Jackson Broom (Huntley, 2019), 2B/SS Alex Gasbarro (St. Laurence, 2020), OF Kyle Labedz (Lincoln-Way Central, 2019), and OF/RHP Riley Morris (Plainfield East, 2020), as well as a number of others. Gasbarro was the primary second baseman on varsity as a sophomore for the Vikings this past spring. Morris has an athletic, strong frame and bat speed at the plate. Labedz is an athletic, left-handed hitting outfielder who had a big spring for Lincoln-Way Central.
