Scouting Notes: Morgan Park vs. Mount Carmel

Illinois Scouting Notes
By: Matt Yarber

Mount Carmel came away with a 7-1 win in this battle but the score did not dictate how close the game truly was.  It was a 3-1 ball game going in to the 6th inning when the Caravan finally pulled away for a 7-1 win.

Morgan Park

Christian Lipscomb, LHP, Class of 2014 – the 5-foot-11, 165-pound LHP kept the Mt. Carmel hitters off balance in his start. Lipscomb was not overpowering with his 78-80 mph fastball but the crafty lefty mixed in a 70-72 mph changeup and a 68 mph curveball all game keeping the Caravan guessing.  Lipscomb was able to hit both sides of the plate and throw any pitch in any count.

Lavar Reed, MIF, Class of 2014 – the wiry 6-foot-2, 160-pound middle infielder filled in for the injured Rahman Williams at SS and did not disappoint.  Reed showed solid actions and quick feet at the position.  At the plate, Reed went 0-3 but took good approaches to his at bats and showed the ability to drive the ball the opposite field.

Josh Shaw, OF, Class of 2016 – the 6-foot, 150-pound outfielder showed an advanced approach at the plate for a Freshmen.  The youngster went 1-2 on the day with a BB.  He was aggressive at the plate and as he continues to fill out physically will gain more bat speed.

Mount Carmel

Marko Boricich, LHP, Class of 2014 – the 6-foot-2, 180-pound LHP started the game for the Caravan and was able to shut down the mustang offense.  Boricich used three pitches; an 82 mph fastball, a 70-71 mph curveball, and a 70 mph changeup recording the W for the Caravan.  Boricich went 5 innings giving up 3 hits while striking out 8.

Jason Gasser, OF/RHP, Class of 2013 – the left-handed hitting outfielder had a great day at the plate going 2-3 with 2 RBIs and a BB.  Gasser broke the game open in the sixth hitting a bases loaded double to left center.  The 6-foot-2, 190-pound outfielder then closed the game for the Caravan sitting 80-82 mph with his fastball recording 2 strike outs.
