On Tuesday, August 10th, the PBR Illinois staff hosted the Illinois Senior Games at Triton College in River Grove. The invite-only event featured 70+ uncommitted 2022 prospects from all across the state in Illinois. Players displayed their talents in both a workout setting and added game play.

Shortly after the event’s conclusion our staff rolled out several post-event content pieces relating to some of the workout standouts, statistical leaders, and more. You can find all of those by clicking HERE.

We’ve already concluded our individual position player analysis, as the catchers, outfielders, and infielder reports are all live. We’ll make the move to the mound today, publishing all of the pitching reports from this event. Before we do so, here are a few names that stood out:

+ In total 11 arms ran their fastball up to 83 mph, or harder, with RHP Tyler Altenbaumer (St. Joseph-Ogden) leading the way with the firmest fastball at 89.07 mph (T2304 rpm). Altenbaumer challenged hitters throughout his outing with a lively fastball that got on hitters quick, sitting 87-88. Altenbaumer also went to a 76-78 mph that worked off a 10/4 plane with a short late wrinkle, to keep hitters honest. Altenbaumer was one of the day's biggest winners’ on the mound.

+  RHP Chase Krueger (Glenbard West) also had an impressive showing in his stint. Krueger has an athletic/broad-shouldered 6-foot, 185-pound frame and throws from a low ¾ slot with some deception throughout his delivery. Krueger gets hard run on his 85-86 mph fastball (average of 15.9 inches of horizontal break; T23.6 inches) and pairs it with a 70-71 mph curveball that plays out of the same window with sweeping action across the zone. 

+ LHP Gavan Wernsing (Stewardson-Strasburg) is a durable 6-foot-2, 230-pound, durable arm who showed off intriguing stuff in his outing. Wernsing creates angle on a mid-80s fastball, T86 (T2223 rpm) with an average induced vertical break of 17.3 inches, T21.4 inches; indicators that Wernsing could create plenty of swing-and-misses on his fastball as he learns to move it up and down in the zone. Wernsing also showed solid shape and action on his slider which worked 1/7 and sat in the upper-70’s. Follow left-handed arm in the 2022 class.

+ LHP Hunter Cash (Paris) is far from polished on the mound but there is plenty of upside to dream on. Cash is listed at 6-foot-5, 190-pounds with long, loose-levers and plenty of physical development left to tap into. Cash has a short arm, creates tilt on his fastball and ran his fastball up to 84 mph. Upside left-handed arm to follow in the 2022 class.

+ RHP’s Matthew Cuzco (St. Ignatius) and Mason Weckler (Belvidere North) both showed off loose arms and ran their fastball up to 86+ mph.

TOP PITCHING PROSPECTS

1. Tyler Altenbaumer, Saint Joseph-Ogden (IL), 2022; Southwestern Illinois JC commit
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-8, 175-pounds. Strong, compact frame.
Delivery: Methodical tempo, works on the right side of the rubber throughout. Drop/drive type delivery, high front side, clean mover downhill, stays in line. Deceptive some and repeats.
Arm Action: RH. Plays with some poke on the backside, short path, near over-the-top slot.
FB: T89.1, 86.9-88.4 mph. Mostly straight action, did flash occasional late arm-side run. Jumps out the hand, effective up in the zone.  T2304, 2186 average rpm.
SL: 75.7-78.2 mph. Shorter tighter wrinkle, 10/4 shape.  T2214, 2108 average rpm.
CH: 80-81 mph. Used sparingly.  T1587, 1587 average rpm.

2. Chase Krueger, Glenbard West (IL), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-0, 185-pounds. Athletic, well-proportioned frame.
Delivery: Simple stretch-only delivery, minimal additional movement, fluid to footstrike and stays in line to target. Athletic finish, easy effort.
Arm Action: RH. Short arm action, 3/4 slot.
FB: T86.4, 84.5-86.1 mph. Deceptive look, average release height of 4.5 ft. Natural arm-side action, averaged 15.9 inches of horizontal movement, some sink with a 64% zone rate.  T2250, 2102 average rpm.
CB: 69.9-70.6 mph. Near exact release height to fastball, plays with sweep across the zone.  T1971, 1860 average rpm.
SPLT: 78-79 mph. Kills spin. 1,367 average rpm.

3. Gavan Wernsing, Stewardson Strasburg (IL), 2022; Southwestern Illinois JC commit
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-2, 230-pounds. Large, physical stature.
Delivery: Tall/fall type delivery, upright posture at balance point, works across body and lands closed to target.
Arm Action: LH. Long arm action with some reach on the backside, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T85.7, 83.7-85.1 mph. Plays down in the zone with some run and sink.  T2223, 2134 average rpm.
SL: 77.1-78.0 mph. Works from fastball slot, 1/7 shape, above-average action.  T2231, 2152 average rpm.

4. Matthew Cuzco, St. Ignatius (IL), 2022; Indiana commit
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-3, 215-pounds.
Delivery: Drop/drive type delivery, rides backside, occasional open-toed landing.
Arm Action: RH. Long arm swing finishes from a 3/4 slot.
FB: T86.6, 82.6-85.1 mph. Two-seam type with natural run created from slot, averaged 17.7 inches of horizontal movement.  T2220, 1981 average rpm.
SL: 70.5-74.1 mph. 10/4 shape, some sweep.  T2135, 2104 average rpm.

5. Mason Weckler, Belvidere North (IL), 2022; Wisconsin-Stevens Point commit

Delivery: Tall/fall type delivery, fluid mover downhill, athletic at balance point, works in line to target with a strong front side. Athletic finish, lands square.
Arm Action: RH. Long arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T86.6, 81.9-85.0 mph. Four-seam type, plays straight. Average release height of 4.8 ft. created by above-average extension downhill.  T2191, 1990 average rpm.

Arm Action: RH. Loose, quick arm that works from a 3/4 slot.
FB: T82.9, 79.1-82.1 mph. Plays with slight arm-side action.  T2067, 1827 average rpm.
SL: 68.6-72.7 mph. Flashed late action off an 11/5 plane.  T1943, 1899 average rpm.

Matthew Cruise, Seneca (IL), 2022; Spoon River JC commit.
Positional Profile: RHP/SS
Body: 5-11, 176-pounds.
Delivery: Smooth and simple tall/fall type delivery, athletic downhill, level shoulders, maintains direction to target and lands square through release. Clear rhythm throughout.
Arm Action: RH. Long and loose arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T83.1, 80.1-82.6 mph. Plays with clear arm-side run, favors that corner of the plate. Averaged 16.1 inches of horizontal movement.  T2062, 1893 average rpm.

Jack Flagg, Oak Park-River Forest (IL), 2022

Delivery: Tall/fall type delivery, upright at balance point, lead leg kick prior to working downhill. Closed front side creates some deception, works in line to target with a controlled finish.
Arm Action: RH. Long and loose arm action, high 3/4 slot.
FB: T83.6, 83.2-83.6 mph. Clean from the hand, velocity projects. Mostly straight action, lively up in the zone, did flash some arm-side run. Thrown for strikes.  T2000, 1893 average rpm.
CB: 68.0-74.3 mph. Manipulates spin; showed 12/6 spin with some depth and early break while mixing in a more aggressive lateral type pitch thrown from a lower slot.  T2123, 1984 average rpm.

Anthony Fowler, McHenry (IL), 2022

Arm Action: LH. Long and loose arm swing, slightly 3/4 slot.
