Illinois News and Notes

By Sean Duncan

The University of Illinois-Chicago landed a pair of prospects when it received commitments from Marist INF Cody Bohanek and Sandburg INF Dave Cronin. Bohanek, who is a physical 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete, is currently ranked No. 53 in Illinois’ Class of 2013. Cronin is a left-handed hitting 2B who enjoyed a strong junior campaign for Sandburg.

St. Joseph’s College landed two more prospects when it received commitments from Crystal Lake South OF Jake Bigos and Beecher RHP Zach Airing. Bigos is a left-handed hitter who recently ran a 6.8 60 at the Fall Prospect Program. Airing is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed with arm strength.

SIU-Edwardsville continues to stay hot on the recruiting trail. First year head coach Tony Stoecklin secured his first 2014 verbal commitment from Dustin Woodcock, a 6-foot, 200-pound OF/LHP from Jacksonville HS. In the 2013 class, Stoecklin has landed PBR All-State RHPs Brendan Miller (Plainfield North HS) and Mike Miller (Lincoln-Way North HS), in addition to left-handed hitting Keaton Wright (Triad HS).

Former Willowbrook HS star RHP Rob Scahill made his MLB debut this week with the Colorado Rockies. The hard-throwing Scahill worked a scoreless inning of relief, yielding one hit. Coming out of Willowbrook HS in 2005, Scahill wasn’t the most coveted prospect in Illinois’ loaded Class of 2005. In fact, Scahill earned just as much praise with his left-handed bat. He went on to Bradley University, where he was drafted twice, the second time in the eighth round by the Rockies in 2009.

Here’s an incredible workout video of Scahill working out in high school:
