Illinois Underclass Showcase: Top Overall Prospects

Today we conclude the analysis of the event, taking a look at the top 2020 and 2021 prospects from the Underclass Showcase held on October 22nd. The top 2020 prospect in attendance was Ben Vitas (Providence Catholic), who has legitimate two-way potential at the next level.

Athletically built outfielder Braden Sayles (Hononegah) was the top 2021 prospect. Sayles is a smooth athlete with a loose, easy left-handed swing.

TOP 2020 PROSPECTS

Ben Vitas SS / RHP / Providence Catholic, IL / 2020

6-foot, 160-pound, athletically built, well-proportioned, two-way prospect. Right-handed hitter, athletic, slightly open setup, short on time stride. Separate hands from lower half and creates easy bat speed. Excellent hand eye, showed feel for the barrel, line drive middle of the field approach. Defensively moves easy and athletic, showed body control and range to both sides, soft hands and feet work together through the baseball. Arm action is easy, short high ¾ slot, carries well, 87 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.31 60, laser-timed. On the mound, advanced pitchability, feel for three and works fast. Tall and fall delivery, works with rhythm and easy effort throughout. Arm works long, loose and quick out of a ¾ window. Fastball showed feel for the zone, arm-side-run, sat 80-82 mph, touched 83; looks to have plenty more in the tank. Curveball, thrown for strikes,11/5 shape, depth, tight spin, ranged between 62-67 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, gets late run at times, feel for the bottom of the zone, 72-73 mph. High-follow 2020 prospect.
