Libertyville Preseason I.D.: Statistical Analysis

By Illinois Staff

On Sunday, the PBR Illinois team hosted its first-ever Libertyville Preseason I.D. showcase at the Libertyville Sports Complex where over 70 prospects participated in this open event. On Tuesday, we published rapid analysis coming out of the three events from last weekend, including Libertyville’s. Today, we’re detailing the top statistical performers from this event specifically.

Keep an eye out in the next few weeks as we edit and post videos in player profiles and publish position-by-position analysis from this event. For now, take a look at the measured data collected in Libertyville.

MAX FASTBALL VELOCITY

Rank Name State School Class Pos Max FB
1 Brady Wells IL Libertyville 2021 RHP 89 mph
2 Joseph Crum IL Springfield 2021 RHP 87 mph
3 Alexander Carruthers IL Warren Township 2021 RHP 85 mph
^ Kyle Kaempf IL McHenry 2022 RHP 85 mph

5 Hank Liss IL Evanston 2023 RHP 82 mph
^ Ryan Geraghty IL Mundelein 2023 RHP 82 mph
^ Jonathan Ciullo IL Libertyville 2022 RHP 82 mph

Local junior RHP/OF Brady Wells (Libertyville; uncommitted) is built at a physical 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, and he used every bit of it to generate advanced arm strength, leading to upper-80s velocity. His size helped him produce some loud hacks in BP, too. From Springfield, junior RHP Joseph Crum (uncommitted) sat 85-87 mph, seven ticks harder than the 80 mph high he clocked last June. RHP/OF Alex Carruthers’ (Warren Township, 2021; uncommitted) also displayed some huge arm strength inside the Libertyville event, sitting at firm 84-85 mph and he also recorded the day’s hardest throw from the outfield. Sophomore Kyle Kaempf (McHenry; uncommitted) notably notched the top fastball velo among 2022s, sitting 82-84 mph, touching 85. Warren freshman Cole Clark (uncommitted) topped 83 mph, which was the top among 2023s at the showcase.

TOP 60-YARD DASH

Rank Name State School Class Pos 60-yard
1 Jon Buckley IL Carmel Catholic 2022 SS 6.93
2 Bobby Dlatt IL Lake Zurich 2022 RHP 6.97
3 Brady Wells IL Libertyville 2021 RHP 7.03
4 Casey Hintz IL St. Viator 2022 SS 7.05
5 Benjamin Snider IL Stevenson 2023 SS 7.08
6 Ethan Andrews IL Antioch 2021 SS 7.10
7 Tyler Conklin IL Kaneland 2021 RHP 7.13

Two sophomores, Jon Buckley (Carmel Catholic; uncommitted) and Bobby Dlatt (Lake Zurich), clocked in the two sub-7.00 times at Libertyville. And despite his hulking size, Wells also ran a 7.03, proving he can help the Wildcats from beyond the rubber this spring. One of the biggest winners of the entire weekend was Saint Viator infielder Casey Hintz (2022; uncommitted), who ran a 7.05. Split seconds behind Hintz was freshman Benjamin Snider (Stevenson; uncommitted), who also topped 89 mph off the tee.

TOP EXIT VELOCITY

Rank Name State School Class Pos Exit Velo
1 Tyler Conklin IL Kaneland 2021 RHP 96
2 Nicholas Hissong IL Cary-Grove 2022 OF 94
3 Braden Mullen IL Loyola Academy 2021 OF 93
4 Nicholas Shiu IL Warren Township 2021 1B 92
5 Brady Wells IL Libertyville 2021 RHP 90
6 Dayvin Olaiz IL Grayslake Central 2021 OF 89
^ Benjamin Snider IL Stevenson 2023 SS 89

We had two 96 mph highs from the exit velocity station on Sunday evening: junior Tyler Conklin (Kaneland; uncommitted) and sophomore Mateusz Gapinski (Lake Forest; uncommitted). Conklin has been one of the winter’s most significant revelations. Cary-Grove sophomore Nicholas Hissong (uncommitted) recorded a 94 mph high himself. It’s also worth noting that the aforementioned Wells topped 90 mph here, too.

TOP INFIELD VELOCITY

Rank Name State School Class Pos INF Velo
1 Tyler Conklin IL Kaneland 2021 RHP 94
2 Casey Hintz IL St. Viator 2022 SS 84
3 Kyle Kaempf IL McHenry 2022 RHP 83
4 Jonathan Ciullo IL Libertyville 2022 RHP 81
5 Nicholas Shiu IL Warren Township 2021 1B 80
6 Nick Palmieri IL Warren 2022 SS 79
^ Cade Nowik IL Lake Forest 2022 RHP 79

Conklin’s premium arm strength, which we’d seen on the mound earlier this winter, allowed him to unleash a 94 mph high across the diamond, 10 ticks higher than Hintz’s excellent 84 mph best. Hintz is a natural defender with loose, easy actions with the noted arm strength to stick at short. Kaempf’s arm strength showed best on the mound on Sunday, but he moves well on defense, too.

TOP OUTFIELD VELOCITY

Rank Name State School Class Pos OF Velo
1 Alexander Carruthers IL Warren Township 2021 RHP 90
2 Braden Mullen IL Loyola Academy 2021 OF 88
3 Brady Wells IL Libertyville 2021 RHP 87
4 Nicholas Hissong IL Cary-Grove 2022 OF 83
^ Nicholas Martino IL Huntley 2022 OF 83

Carruthers’ arm strength allowed him to top this chart, too, where his 90 mph throws home led the event. Junior Braden Mullen (Loyola Academy; uncommitted) was just a couple ticks off the lead. Naturally, Wells’ high was just behind the two above.

TOP CATCHER VELOCITY

Rank Name State School Class Pos C Velo

4 Corben Krofel IL Wauconda 2022 C 74
5 Colin Husko IL Wauconda 2022 SS 73
6 Ryan Cummings IL Carmel Catholic 2021 C 70

Ryan Risch (Warren Township, 2021; uncommitted) demonstrated some noteworthy traits on defense Sunday, topping 82 mph out of the crouch. Kyle Odeshoo (Prospect, 2022; uncommitted) landed near the top with a 76 mph high through the infield.

6 Corben Krofel IL Wauconda 2022 C 2.29-2.36
7 Ryan Cummings IL Carmel Catholic 2021 C 2.34-2.44

Huntley sophomore Brandon Hanley (uncommitted) was consistent out of the chute which helped his pops average the lowest in attendance. He had a solid day overall, especially defensively. Wauconda backstop Colin Husko (2022; uncommitted) was consistent on his throws down, while Risch was similarly consistent.
