PBR IL - Lincoln Trail CC Scout Day: Blast Motion Board

By: Kevin Cronin
Tech Analyst, Area Scout

On Wednesday, October 13, the PBR Illinois staff traveled to Robinson, Illinois, to host the Lincoln Trail CC Scout Day. Roughly 35+ prospects, all of which are uncommitted, participated in a pro-style workout in front of our staff.

Earlier today we published a Statistical Analysis, bringing you a quick statistical analysis of those that participated in the event, as well as a quick nugget on which players stood out. We then started to dive deeper into the data, looking at the pitch metrics and batted ball numbers from this event inside our TrackMan Files piece.

Now we'll continue to roll out the data we gathered from this event by taking a look at the swing metrics collected during batting practice thanks to our Blast Motion sensors. Below we'll highlight which players from this event stood out amongst their peers from a swing metrics standpoint.

Hand Speed (Peak & Average)

Rank Name School HS Grad Year Pos Hand Speed (max)
1 Jake Hutchins Lincoln Trail JC 2019 OF 25.2 mph
2 Adam Hutchinson Lincoln Trail JC 2020 RHP 24.3 mph
3 Brady Vaughn Lincoln Trail JC 2021 OF 24.0 mph
^ Derrick Dawson Lincoln Trail JC 2020 C 24.0 mph
4 Tyler Larguinho Lincoln Trail JC 2020 OF 23.7 mph
^ Will Richter Lincoln Trail JC 2018 OF 23.7 mph
5 Sam Seeker Lincoln Trail JC 2019 LHP 23.5 mph

Rank Name School HS Grad Year Pos Hand Speed (avg)
1 Jake Hutchins Lincoln Trail JC 2019 OF 23.9 mph
2 Will Richter Lincoln Trail JC 2018 OF 22.9 mph
3 Sam Seeker Lincoln Trail JC 2019 LHP 22.8 mph
4 Tyler Larguinho Lincoln Trail JC 2020 OF 22.6 mph
5 Brady Vaughn Lincoln Trail JC 2021 OF 22.6 mph
6 Adam Hutchinson Lincoln Trail JC 2020 RHP 22.5 mph
7 Derrick Dawson Lincoln Trail JC 2020 C 22.5 mph

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Rank Name School HS Grad Year Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Derrick Dawson Lincoln Trail JC 2020 C 81.4 mph
2 Sam Seeker Lincoln Trail JC 2019 LHP 76.7 mph
3 Jake Hutchins Lincoln Trail JC 2019 OF 74.2 mph
4 Brady Vaughn Lincoln Trail JC 2021 OF 73.3 mph
5 Will Richter Lincoln Trail JC 2018 OF 72.6 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Rank Name School HS Grad Year Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Brady Vaughn Lincoln Trail JC 2021 OF 26.9 g
2 Derrick Dawson Lincoln Trail JC 2020 C 23.4 g
3 Tyler Larguinho Lincoln Trail JC 2020 OF 23.1 g
4 Will Richter Lincoln Trail JC 2018 OF 22.0 g
5 Kade Lassen Lincoln Trail JC 2020 2B 21.8 g
6 Sam Seeker Lincoln Trail JC 2019 LHP 21.2 g

Rank Name School HS Grad Year Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Brady Vaughn Lincoln Trail JC 2021 OF 23.0 g
2 Will Richter Lincoln Trail JC 2018 OF 20.2 g
3 Derrick Dawson Lincoln Trail JC 2020 C 20.0 g
4 Tyler Larguinho Lincoln Trail JC 2020 OF 19.5 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
