Lockport Preseason I.D.: Infielder Analysis

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

On Feb. 18, the PBR Illinois staff made its way back to Bo Jackson’s Elite Sports Dome in Lockport, the site of the annual Lockport Preseason I.D. showcase. Every year, this event is one of the most heavily attended on our showcase calendar, with 200 prospects in attendance this time around.

Monday we began the positional roll-out with a look at the catchers. Today we continue the analysis with a look at the near-100 infielders in attendance. A number of underclassmen impressed but it was 2020 INF Anthony Fornero (Lemont) who topped the list. The uncommitted junior made a lot of hard contact at the plate, was natural on the infield and showed off a strong arm across the diamond (89 mph). Fornero should be a highly-sought after 2020 moving forward.

Ryan O’Neil (Providence Catholic) and Ben Hartl (Sacred Heart-Griffin) are two 2021s who find themselves right behind Fornero. O’Neil, is a 6.90 runner, has an easy arm on the infield, the tools to stay at shortstop and a repeatable short stroke at the plate with bat strength. Hartl, who was the top catcher from the event, is a switch-hitter with a compact swing, is fundamentally sound on the infield and showed a strong, accurate arm.

To see how the top-15 list played out along with analysis on all other infielders at the event in Lockport, continue on below.
